No Mans Sky - looks interesting

It'd be nice if they made it so it worked with VR headsets...
NMS Beyond does VR on Steam and PS4, it's a free update https://www.nomanssky.com/2019/03/no-mans-sky-beyo...There's also an update this week for the graphics to support Vulkan instead of Open GL, I'm not exactly sure how or why Vulkan is better but the main gain for it is with AMD graphics cards https://www.nomanssky.com/2019/04/vulkan-update/
I haven't loaded this up for a long time, I really should get back into it.

Argos have NMS (XBox) on sale for £19.99 ... I'm pretty tempted. Is it worth it?
I enjoyed it, would say its worth a go, but it's one of those marmite games...i stopped playing it because it was just too much of a timesink to pick up and play for an hour here and there, its the type of game you want to set aside a few hours to play a session.New update releases tomorrow - looks very in depth again. I don't have VR so that isn't relevant to me (great selling point for those with the capabilities). Online component looks interesting. The previously 'secret' third part of the update looks pretty epic - loads of new systems introduced to add depth and variety.
Was so, so disappointed when this was first released but credit where it is due. The team has got their heads down and turned it around brilliantly. It's one of my faves of the generation now.

My son got this at launch, played for about 10 hours, crashed the ship in the middle of no where, got stuck and then binned it as a waste of time.
I've just picked it up last wekend for the 1st time and am playing on PS4 with VR.
Find it curious and relaxing. got killed a couple of times by sentinels on opening planet so left as soon as I could, found another planet and also found a space station above it so have learnt a few alien words and upgraded my multi tool a bit. Now beginning to build a simple base. I'm about 4 or 5 hours in.
No idea whether it will continue to grow on me or I will get bored....but so far, so good. No idea if there is any "point" to the game....I've not googled or researched...just dove in.
The VR and movement out of the ship works well for me. In flight I have to be careful I don't induce motion sickness especially with roll or rapid change of direction when exploring the planet.

I would never describe NMS as a game in the traditional sense. It's more of a resource gathering exercise. Something is fundamentally missing from the core of it and has been since day 1.
I tend to agree with you. I bought NMS on day one and bailed within a week. Rebought it recently in light of the Beyond patch and all the positive press it got. To be fair to hello games it’s much more polished and content rich now - but the resource grind is still soul destroying and there’s just something about the atmosphere within the game that just doesn’t click with me....I so want to love it....but I just can’t. I check in on it every time they do an update because I really want to like it. Every time though I find I just get bored. My main draw is the exploration side due to the procedural stuff, but I think that might be its own worst enemy - precisely because each planet has not been lovingly designed, there’s not really anything much to... actually see. Sure there’s various plants to ID and creatures scampering around but they’re all basic variations on a theme (as in life I suppose), there’s stumbling on things that make you want to explore like caves and so on, but the problem is you know there’s just going to be some fungi and cave creatures inside. There’s no mysteries, no reward set up for you to discover, so after one or two it feels pointless to ever bother again.
There’s loads to DO, in theory, but nothing really matters or is particularly interesting... just me? Maybe I just prefer a more structured game?

The problem is that the game was never designed with a proper structure in place and it's fundamentally broken. I admire them for persevering with the updates but it still remains a boring resource harvesting sim. There’s loads to DO, in theory, but nothing really matters or is particularly interesting... just me? I can see why people don't like it and can't gel with it. But I like the chill of it. You just hang out and collect stuff and take photos. It definitely isn't for everyone but I like the fact that it is relatively aimless. Something to be enjoyed along side other games that scratch other itches.
