I've just downloaded this for PS4 - any basic tips for an absolute novice?

Great work!

I'll be back on Tanks some time this year in between kicking the arse out of Monster Hunter World. I think it will be the Chinese TD line for me next.
I'm on the tier 9 one of these at the moment. It's great!

In terms of the others, tier 4 was good fun, tiers 5-7 were worse copies of Russian equivalents, tier 8 is monstrous when it's top tier but not so good against tier 9 and 10.

I'm not entirely sure I'd recommend them if you've gone down the Russian TD line to the 704, though the tier 9 is hilarious at poking round left hand corners and blatting things for large amounts of damage.

Watch the training videos on Youtube. Probably Quickybaby and Jingles for starters.

And don't rush up the tiers! Loads of new players rush to tier 8, 9 and 10 without knowing how to effectively utilise the maps or their tanks.

I like Jingles videos but he is only worth watching for enjoyment, he rarely features his own gameplay as he is pretty poor and not remarkable to watch at all. His commentary is more focused around the lolz of whatever is happening rather than a real tactical assessment. Quickybaby is much better for learning the game, He features a lot of his own gameplay as he is a genuine top level player, even though he often plays down his ability.

In terms of learning the game, try reading the wiki on it. Get an understanding of the mechanics and maybe play around in training rooms first to get a feel for things. Go down the Russian heavy line leading to the tier 5 KV-1. This thing used to be an absolute monster back in the day and it's still very solid. You'll learn a lot about the game by playing this tank, including how to angle your tank to maximise the effectiveness of your armour and how to aim for weakspots on enemy tanks.

Most of all have fun, there is a huge amount to learn and a lot of it you'll pick up through experience, but it helps not to go in blind, because you will be getting your arse handed to you for a while but at least you'll understand why, and you can strive to improve rather than getting annoyed and quitting because. Learning the spotting and view range mechanics will take a huge amount of frustration away. Perhaps the #1 complaint I hear from new players is that they're getting shot by invisible tanks!

Most of all, have fun. It's easy to get carried away on stats with this game but when I play these days I try to play fun tanks rather than tanks that are necessarily strong. In fact if you look at my list of tier Xs, of which I have quite a few, I've got a really electic mix of all of the rare stuff that people hardly ever play, where a lot of players just do game after game in their tier X tank destroyers or Russian mediums to inflate their states, and that doesn't really appeal to me.

It's easy to feel hard done by in wot especially when you are not top tier so people tend to rush up to tier 10 to be the big bad guy then get fked over relentlessly..

Much better to learn the maps and play styles, mechanics of the game at tier 5 or 6 and when not top tier just know your going to be more support and generally have less impact.

It's not an easy game.

haven't played this in years, but I remember having almost every tank, and my favourite by far was the mid tier German VK - much like the Battleship Scharnhorst in World of Warships - very well balanced and the most enjoyable to play.

I'm concentrating on personal missions at the moment and using tier 6 when I can.

The vk3001p is a beast along with the easy 8 and jumbo all 3 are fun. Tier 6 is good, 7 and 8 less so.

Probably get the vk3001h, mission is ram kill a higher tier tank, don't really have anything suitable at the moment. It's unlocked as I've a maus etc anyhow.

Picked this up again recently, I recall how grindy the whole thing is now biggrin
Also Iove my Su26 but the game seems to love putting you on the Himmeldorf map for which SPG is verging on useless.

Still, it passes the time.

The pace difference once you pass tier V or so is massive though, gets quite slow really so I find myself switching back and forth just to not get bored.

Where else can I drive a KV though smile

QuickyBaby made a good video recently about new players and what it's like, and why it sucks to start the game with a terrible crew, etc. I can't link as I'm at work, it's called something click-baity like "Cheating streamer caught" as he was accused of cheating after the game.

WarThunder, but if you think World of Tanks is grindy and slow paced above tier 5 you'll be in for a rude shock hehe

PATHETIC CHEATING STREAMERlaughlaugh

A 50% crew and no sixth sense make for a much reduced WOT experience.

We had 3 platoons of 3 in my clan the other night, were chatting to each other via Teamspeak and counting down and clicking at the same time. We all ended up in the same match at one point (though on different teams) and someone typed 'Match Rigging Platoon Cants' in the in-game chat.

Which is now the name of our room within Teamspeak. laugh

I agree with this, I have a tier10 tank now, but I find playing tier 5 or 6 more enjoyable, especially with a well trained crew and the right equipment for the tank.

Last chance to play the 'old' version of WOT today in EU - 1.0 is going live tomorrow. So if you fancy being smashed by unrealistically balanced soviet tanks in low definition, today is your last opportunity.

From tomorrow, the smashing by unrealistically balanced soviet tanks is in HD - so at least you will have something pretty to look at whilst being mullered.

Well, it's certainly prettier. Interesting seeing that the early tiers now get to see more maps.

My PC is far from new but I found it ran really well before, now I get a lot of freezes and pauses and the load time is much greater. Still get decent FPS just doesn't run as smooth.

That and I can't say I though the graphics were that terrible before for the kind of game it is.

The fireball arty tracers make me chuckle

However i agree i don't think the previous graphics were that bad

Woohoo so the trees move when you fire through them

Feel rather ambivalent

I would have preferred new and better maps than eye candy

Ah, the plasma cannon. Indeed. I've taken to saying 'plasma cannon online in 5 seconds'.

So... I really wonder why I sold the SU-8 I had back ages ago. So much fun to play, so much better than my little SU26 SPG due to the splash damage.
Been caning a lot of missions in all but the TD line and making credits, even got a "Hero" package so ended with with a German Pz T25 that's good fun.

Still the x5 weekend event was horrid, my win rate was painful.
