"Edge of Tomorrow" is based on every bloody game where you only complete it by figuring out how not to get killed the way you did on the last attempt.
Good point actually. It's like those old arcade games where upon death, you get sent back to the start of the level with no weapons/powerups etc biggrin

I was going to say the Uncharted games would make good movies, especially with Nathan Fillion as Drake. But then they'd just end up being too much like Indiana Jones.
Judging by the last Indiana Jones movie absolutely anything would be better. I believe an Uncharted movie is planned. There's talk of Chris Pratt being cast.

Gears of War would be a good one, although casting could be tricky since the people who do the voices don't carry the physical presence needed (except Cole)

I'd love to see a Borderlands movie, with Handsome Jack being the main guy. He had me in stitches throughout 2 and The Pre Sequel!
Think it was announced last week there's going to be a Borderlands movie...
Not sure how I feel about it, there certainly is some back story there and the 'Tales from the Borderlands' games show that you can just have new characters in there too and still be interesting, but would people who haven't played for hours get the humour?

Really - Sounds like about 80% of films made to me!

But of course Call of Duty has already been filmed, as "Strike Back"!

Downloaded this game/film this weekend, the reviews were pretty good but we will see!

"Dead Rising: Watchtower is an action horror zombie film directed by Zach Lipovsky, which was produced by Tomas Harlan and Tim Carter with writing by Tim Carter as well. The film stars Jesse Metcalfe, Dennis Haysbert, Virginia Madsen, Meghan Ory, Keegan Connor Tracy, and Rob Riggle. It is based on the video game of the same name, principal photography began on September 30, 2014 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Legendary Pictures is producing the picture as its first digital film through its Legendary Digital Media division and it was released on Crackle on March 27, 2015."

I see there has been some leaked footage of the Warcraft movie.

Hard to tell from the awful video what it will be like though. Terrible probably (but it will still make millions)

Probably because most films that are based on games stink ?

What game actually has a good plot that you can create a film from? I haven't played any.
Mass Effect has a more engrossing and well built and stylised universe than most Sci-Fi movies. The Halo universe also.

I want a Halo film made, the short clips that have been made prove that it's possible, so they just need to extend it. It has such potential not to be st but I guess it would depend on who directed it.
The trouble with most games is, they are far too shallow and single focused. That's why it's a game, not a story.

Characters are pretty pretty weak and even the general storyline. Plus what do you really make the film about? Following what happens in the game usually isn't going to work.

As for Halo, well there is this:

On Netflix it airs as a single feature length film.

It was ok tbh. But the reality is, it was a far cry away from the game. Not in terms of quality as personally I think the games suck big time!! But the film really wasn't the same story or from the same perspective.

Most likely because no studio in their right mind would want to go through the expense for what will, for the most part, appeal to such a small number of cinema goers that the numbers wouldn't add up.

Yes, there are some exceptions, Hitman was OK, but Need for Speed? A movie made pretty much on the success of the Fast and Furious franchise.

The truth is, as stated earlier the formats aren't really compatible. Games are immersive at their best and even at their worst still require input from the gamer. Movies are passive entertainment.

Dredd 3D (in my mind a good movie) barely broke even, (45 Million?) a lot it got back from Blu Ray sales. For a movie based on a game to succeed it would have to be one that appeals to the gamer and the casual movie goer. The fan boys alone won't be enough IMHO.

Black Ops the movie? LOL
Battlefield: Operation Steel Talon WTF?

And these are the biggest franchises currently on the block.

Saying that and this is where I contradict myself. a Dawn of War 40K movie would be awesome! but for all the reasons highlighted above would be a massive fail financially and unless it's scripted by Frank Millar, got a shed load of A list celebs, directed by Wheddon and bank rolled by Disney, it would bomb harder than snakes on a plane.

Gears of War good shout! That would make an awesome, brainless film I'm sure!

But as said above I suppose the answer is what I first thought - games are too niche and simply wouldn't make enough money.

Surely there would/could be some exceptions?!

Battlefield doesn't lend itself to a movie but Bad Company 2 has great characters.

I would love to see Metal Gear Solid 2 turned into a movie, quite liked the conspiracy plot that unfolded. Would imagine you'd never be able to incorporate it into a film, without completely shredding the meat of the story out to make it under 3 hours.

When I played GTAV, I thought some of the missions would fit together to make a half decent tv series (in particular michaels missions such as chasing after the huge boat being trailered on the freeway) but like the Transporter series,
I doubt the budget could stretch very far!

Black Ops 2 made $500 million within the first 24 hours so it's hard;y as if it's a handful of fanboys who still live with their parents

Agreed, but how would that equate to a good premise for a Black Ops movie? I can't recall the last decent Movie based on an FPS franchise (am I wrong?). Hitman wasn't exactly Drive?

Games are Interactive and a Movie you're buckled in and its a nice ride.

Correct me if I'm wrong but most Online FPS is primarily adversarial, it's team A against team B (yes, you could argue that's a big premise for a lot of movies). You're invested in your team for the most part and want to win, there's a bonus for winning.

A well crafted movie on the other hand, is a passive experience, yes you'll hopefully bond with the lead characters, you'll empathise with the situation(s) they are put in and you'll despise the villain's shocking scheme to turn the world to ash / blow up a peace summit / hold the world to ransom / kill kittens (delete as applicable). If we're honest, very few movies (probably because they produce so many) really stray from the formulaic and need to appeal to the largest demographic to rake in the most cash.

And there's the rub, given the hulking beast that is the CoD franchise who'd bet millions on making a movie based on it?

Comics however........

A COD movie would be fairly easy, you could take pretty much any modern military script, change the names round a bit and slap the title on.

The problem with most video game movies is that they stray too far from the source material, Hitman being a great example. The games are about planning, blending in (although admittedly I don't quite understand how a bald man with a barcode on his neck can do that so easily), killing your target and escaping without drawing attention. The films were about him flying around in slo mo with dual pistols shooting dozens of baddies. For me the best two are still Dead or Alive and Mortal Kombat since they realised how stupid the source material was and had fun with it

All these movies made from the Lego games are pretty good, Star Wars, Pirates, Marvel, Indiana Jones hehe

On a serious note I reckon a couple of the GTA games would be good, though may end up a bit like a Fast and Furious film.

Dead Space has potential.

Could go uber geeky and do a Gran Turismo/ Forza film where the guy starts off as an avid track day guy with a civic and through some epic car porn ends up racing protoypes at LeMans
