VR is the new 3D.

Lots of hype, but the bubble is bursting.
Not true; not even close. 3D was awful - I hated it; no one I know liked it, no one I know has anything 3D.

I know plenty of people with VR. Everyone that tries it, loves it. It's been a sales success despite the high price.

It's going somewhere, it's not bursting.

Tempted by Lone Echo but tried the free disc game one and really struggle to control movements. I'm absolutely useless in a match. Must be getting old, I play computer games like my gran.

I was rubbish on my first game too, kept getting close to the disc but someone would grab it before me, I had hold of it once but lost it quick...
Funniest part for me was some poor guy in the lobby being VR raped by a horny teen, he had hold of the guy so he couldn't escape and was touching him up, in the end he was on his knees doing the motions and it actually looked pretty realistic... it was hilarious even though childish laugh

VR has been fading since the middle of last year. Sales for Sony headsets and others have been nowhere near expectations. Demand has crashed. VR is a gimmick, like 3D. VR headsets are too immersive and nerdy.

AR has also crashed. Pokemon Go usage is down something like 50-80% since its peak.

HTC sold 190,000 vives in Q1.17. I would say that's pretty good for a niche product.
Gear VR and Sony were over a million combined in Q1 alone.

HTC, Facebook and Sony have all said they are happy with their sales in the reports I have seen. FB have been running their summer offer but HTC have not reduced their price by much as they are still selling units.

Well, if you believe that I recommend you get one and enjoy it while you still can. smile You won't regret it.

Pokemon Go is not a good game and really is a good example of an over hyped product. Playing a half decent VR game compared to an on-screen game is like going from a 65" 4K TV to a black and white TV from 1950.

Having purchased a PSVR at the weekend I'm hooked. I'd used the rift a bit at work but never for any gaming. I fully believe it's the future and not just a flash in the pan

You do realise VR was released in the middle of last year, right? So how is it "fading"?
In any case, the Vive beat expectations, and the Rift (with price drop) is selling out. The PSVR outsold Sony's expectations as well.

So yeah, I guess it's fading. :/

However, I will say this; I've been using VR since it was first available as developer kits. I've been actively using it over the past 4/5 years - as have many people, so it may stay niche, but that isn't representative of failure. Niche works quite well.

I love your comment "VR headsets are too immersive". Yeah, they got that wrong, didn't they? :P

I have the same issue with my G29 in Project Cars (it works flawlessly in everything else) normally have to remove and install the drivers again to get it to work

I had ordered a joystick and surge protector from Amazon to use with the Rift on the new desk I made, Amazon and the post office both said it was delivered last Saturday but I didn’t have it, I was arguing with them for a while yesterday and they eventually agreed to start an investigation into where it was.

I got home then thought about having a look around the area, peeked into the neighbours garden to check as they are on holiday for 3 weeks and there is my parcel lying over the other side of the locked gate looking all soggy from the rain that lasted all day Sunday!

Managed to fish it out with a stick and reaching through the gate and the boxes inside are also soggy so I’m not accepting that, especially as one item is a surge protector!

If they had just left a bloody note saying garten then even with my rubbish German I could have worked that one out.

Now I have the fun job of explaining/arguing with the post office after work today, no doubt they won’t speak English and as my German is rubbish it should be fun…

My Gin delivery didn't arrive last week, no sign.
Checked the tracking number "we tried to deliver and you weren't in so left a card"

I was in.
You didn't leave a card.

Regarding VR, my new machine is up and running and I did some low level testing last night and it flies. No judder/frame drops at all. Lovely crisp visuals.

Better resolution and/or reduced SDE via better panels will help reduce this in future iterations of VR. In the meantime, if you have a beefy PC, increasing supersampling can make a difference here, but comes at a huge FPS hit, so try to find a balance.

God rays I believe is a lens issue (fresnel).

How long will it take for my Rift to arrive from Oculus? It's been a week since I placed my order and I do not have a tracking number yet. grumpy

I caved and bought Lone Echo and so far i'm really liking it, its very immersive and the story line is interesting. I'm not too far into it yet but would recommend it if someone is looking for something like this.

Also tried Alien Isolation and its pretty intense! It was already a pretty tense game on a screen but in VR its even more so, I think its only available with the Rift at the moment but the dev is working on making it available for Vive also (At least that was what I read when I got it, maybe different now), its just a .dll file you download and put into the directory and then it works with VR, so very simple.

How is my spec for VR. Steam VR shows it as at the end of the green section for VR ready. Only Item I think I will be upgrading this year is additional RAM

i5 6600k @ 4.1
Asus Z170p
Hyper X Fury DDR4 8gig
EVGA Geforce GTX980 SC
EVGA 650w G2 Gold 80+

Thinking VR for iRacing and ETS2.

I did have PSVR and it was excellent for the first few weeks and then, if I am honest a bit meh!. How is the Vive / Occulus compared to PSVR.

Your PC spec is better than mine, although I have the 980ti, you should be fine. If you are only thinking driving games then get the rift. Supersampling makes a big difference to visual quality of images. Vive/Rift way better than PSVR, I tried driveclub on my Bro-in-laws...the difference is night and day for driving games...

ETS2 is very poorly optimised for vr, well it was last time I tried it anyway. I find it stutters and lags quite badly. I need to play around and see if turning stuff down helps though.

VR racing games are epic, Assetto Corsa and Project Cars, with Cars2 coming out soon. It's a great time to a virtual racing driver smile

Purchased Arizona a couple of days ago. It's more Tomb Raider than Doom but I've stuck with it. Enjoying it but get hot as I did with the execllent Robo Recall (still my favourite)

Not a problem. I did have an i7 950 @ oc'd to 3.4 GHz and 12GB DDR3 @1600 and it ran ok, I've upgraded to a Xeon X5670 OC'd to 4.2 and tracking seems a little smoother. I've also used afterburner to lightly oc the gfx card more is better.

Won't be long before you think about a GFX card upgrade, I know I am lol. VR is pretty much all GPU power. I'm going to get a 1080Ti in the Black Friday deals, along with some other kit for my rig that will make my wife roll her eyes smile the toys do start to get expensive once you get started/hooked.

If you have 3D Mark to compare my machine got 97.5% on Firestrike Extreme Stress Test (FPS stability is v important in VR to avoid motion sickness)
