This was just £40 when it first came out. Almost bought a PS4 just to have a go. Now it's £70. Says everything about how well it's doing...
£70 must be for a deluxe, extra dlc or limited edition surely? The RRP for standard versions of AAA games is £40.

Have watched a few let’s players on YouTube, appears to be a literal walking simulator... Suspect it’s not for me as a result!

Thought I'd weigh in as another person who is playing it.

As some backgroudn I am a fan of Kojima's general insanity, the long cutscenes, the obvious lack of an editor to say 'no' every now and then to dialogue that makes the same (simplistic) point twice, but totally fails to explain any background information, leaving it entirely up to the player to slowly infer over hours and hours of gameplay and the odd sentence buried in a cutscene.

There are familiar interface styles to MGS5, but I'd say if you enjoyed that game there's no guarantee you'd enjoy this one. I can 100% understand how it would be divisive, and I can 100% understand how it would just frankly be boring for many gamers.

I'm quite conscious of coming across as holier-than-thou with that statement, but frankly people have different tastes in their entertainment media, there isn't a right or wrong or one that's better or worse, but there definitely are different tastes, and I wouldn't say this caters to many of them hehe

There is a very melancholic bleakness to most of the minute to minute gameplay, you can read in to that what you will, the story thus far is less interesting than some of the characters or really just your general attempts to fully grasp what the quivering fk is going on, but cinematically there are some beautiful moments, some serious 'oh st' bits and the sort of half online world is actually surprisingly engaging, contributing to a constantly shifting community that you can't actually interact with and yet oddly feel compelled to 'help'.

To fully take this to the upper echelons of wishy washy bullst, I would say it's very much more of an experience than a game, something to reflect on and not just something to dip in to for relaxed entertainment.

As a prime example, the idea of having almost any of my friends over and showing them the game I'd find an utterly pointless and frankly slightly embarrassing exercise, so plainly dull is the premise..."Yeah, so basically you're Postman Pat, but you don't have a van, invisible stuff can sort of kill you, and you can't let your boots wear out or you'll hurt your feet."

But then there are 2 or 3 friends that I know would enjoy it and I'd love sharing it with them much like watching a (long) film.

There have been quite a few independent games that are more 'experiences' than games, and I'd argue this is the first AAA title to take a similar approach, albeit with some normal 'gamey' mechanics dusted on top to make a good bunch of trailers.

I think really it depends what you want from a game, at which point you'd either give it a 3/10, or probably an 8 or 9.

EDIT:

Oh and the graphics are fking impressive, even on a standard PS4. At the "almost tempted to buy a PS4Pro even though the PS5 comes out in a bit" level of impressive.

Echoes my thoughts that it's an experience. I love the concept of helping others you will never meet.

I decided to bite the bullet and buy the game yesterday.

Only 3 hours in, probably halfway through episode 2, it is bat st crazy but I actually really like it so far. Hopefully it continues to hold up.

Just for context, I have never played a Kojima game before.

ETA- Now about 10 hours in and has got even crazier but for the good.

Some interesting feedback so far.

I was very disappointed with the first MGS 20 years ago. I tried whichever iteration on the PS2 and the latest one on PS4 which both bored me to death in no more than 10 minutes... Should I still try Death Stranding?

I would suggest an emphatic no unless you enjoy the sensation of wasting your money

Completed the game last night, after 65 hours. Absoluteley love it... brilliant game!

I agree it will not be for everyone but for me it was near perfect. 9.5/10 and game of the year for me.

Arriving on PC. If anyone wants to see what a game coded for DLSS v2 (Deep Learning Super Sampling) can do for increased detail and huge jumps in frame rates.

With a basic RTX 2060 at 4k & maximum settings.

DLSS off - 30fps
DLSS on - 68fps

I've completed a few MGS games and loved them so thought I would give this a go.

Looks lovely but it is utterly boring.

Just got to Port City.

It's an oddly compelling game. I quite like the hiking about collecting and delivering cargo and building infrastructure... then every so often that weird ghost nonsense takes you out of it.

Well, coming up to the end of this now. Just got to deliver my final order to Capital Knot City. It's certainly been a hell of a ride

Some of the atmosphere it creates at times is really quite impressive isn't it?

Madder than a box of frogs on acid though, no doubt about that hehe

I'm really struggling with this, for most games, I can't wait to get some time to get on the PS4 and get stuck in, but for this, I just don't seem to be that bothered. When I have some PS4 time currently, I'm just hitting up Disney+ to be honest and OD'ing on Star Wars content.

I only went back to complete it a few months ago, having pre-ordered it and played about 60 hours when it was released. I just lost the will for a bit and couldn't face going back to it hehe
