I am a few hours in. Avoiding spoilers, I have the you-know-what-in-a-jar and some very strange things have tried to kill me. Loving the interwoven story. Looking forward to it developing.
It sounds like you 'get' the game and if that is the case you are in for an amazing experiece. Enjoy

Despite being interested in this game when it came out, I only got it last week. Its great and I'm really enjoying it. I love story games though so this was always going to suit me.
I've just done the first round of deliveries after the trip across the water.
I've currently given up on it, just before the first "trip across water", so maybe I just need to get over that hurdle and it will start to gel?I've just done the first round of deliveries after the trip across the water.
About 14 hours in and really enjoying this. I bought it for PC on Steam and am currently playing it via Geforce Now.
Despite finding MGS4 to be too overblown and weird, this actually seems a lot less weird and much more grounded despite the 'out there' plot. The cinematics are much more watchable - probably because they actually have proper actors now - and the bizarro story is supposed to be bizarre and strange by its nature so the story line doesn't grate against a 'real world' scenario. MGS4 in comparison was just bewildering, it was meant to be set more or less in the real world but the plot line just went haywire.
The 'proper actors' also mean that the characters are actually relatable now. And from what I've seen of the story so far, I'm really liking it (I have actually been doing a lot of side missions as I just like the vibe of the core mechanic so am not hurrying with the story progression).
Yeah, some of the 'lets all be together and help each other out' dialogue is sappy, but it's not annoying me as much as it normally would because I just find the game so engrossing. The online element where other people effectively help you out - but indirectly - is really well implemented and fits in with the themes.
Also, it looks simply great. I loved the Decima Engine in Horizon:Zero Dawn and it fits this game perfectly. It is just about the first game engine to really give me a sense of being in a real, large, outdoors world.
All in all - great game. Not at all what people were expecting during the years of hype so I think that put a lot of people off, who were thinking that there was going to be some sort of revolutionary leap forward. Instead, it's just a nice evolution of story-lead gaming that is extremely well designed and executed.

I have really tried to get into this with an open mind (despite having hated the last MGS) as I am a thinking gamer so this appealed.
I’m at chapter 6, so around 40hrs in but it feels like death by a thousand cuts, the more I play the more it drains my enthusiasm away. I get the fact it’s bleak, post apocalyptic but there’s no levity, nothing ever to lift the mood, it’s mentally very dark and it’s constant.
The gameplay in a nutshell is as you know deliver this, collect that and avoid the same literally two enemies..and the rain. That’s it. I find Sam the protagonist, pretty dull and the folk he encounters, well It’s hard to empathise with a hologram.
The scenery is pretty but again it’s all the same until you get into the mountains, then it’s mountains...until it’s not again.
I bought this with Days Gone in the BF sales but after trying the latter for an hour it’s got me more excited to want to come back for more. So I fear this will have to be CEX’d.
Have to admire Kojimas creativity however, but this ones just too way out there for me. I guess I’d compare it to a movie that’s completely draining despite expertly made.

o paraphrase - gaming is supposed to be fun, and (for you) Death Stranding isn’t?
Quite! I guess I watch a film/play a game to be entertained not drained. Where are you on DS?metrofour said:

Have you tried building roads and racing trikes?Next I'm building some lifts and sledding that carrier...

Been thinking about picking it up, is it just a walking simulator or is the gameplay actually engaging?
Well, a lot of it is literally about walking around but I don't consider it to be a walking sim. The basic 'courier' gameplay loop is pretty engaging IMO and the story is pretty good, if far out, (again IMO).I love the game engine, really gives you a sense of being present in a real World (as was the case with Horizon:Zero Dawn). Graphics are great and the game is constantly introducing new gameplay mechanics at a well thought out pace.
I really like it but can see why many would not. I wasn't a great fan of games like MGS4 which I thought was pointlessly over-complicated, boring to play and with a poorly written plot and stupidly long and generally poorly executed cut scenes. This takes the same basic mix but does it a lot, lot better.

It's a thinking person's game and one that rewards consideration of and helping others.
The story is very, very good.
You need to plan ahead for deliveries. Utilize the tools available. Make use of tools left by other players to help you. Use some skill and nous when walking, climbing, running away from the BT's etc.
The BT's are interesting. They cause you trouble but you can learn how to handle them in time. When the game starts you wonder how the hell you will handle them.
I've finished the main story, but am glad that I found out you can keep playing it afterwards. It's one of the few games I want to keep playing to complete more of the side stuff.
