My daughter is playing this ... brilliant - great fun going for long walks together to find stuff.

Unfortunately we are about 20 ft too far away from a Gym to be able to do it from home...but that is definitely a 1st World Problem!

Log out of App Store.
Change location to USA.
Back to App Store, find Pokemon Go and try to install.
Create new Apple ID. (Mine failed consistently at this stage)
Confirm new ID via email.
Back to App Store.
Install should now work.

The way it worked for me is pretty much this however... (My edit is in CAPS

Log out of App Store.
Change location to AUSTRALIA.
Back to App Store, DOWNLOAD ANY FREE APP IF POKEMON GO IS NOT VISIBLE, THIS IS IMPORTANT
IT WILL ASK YOU TO LOG INTO YOUR APPLE ID HOWEVER Create new Apple ID USING ANOTHER EMAIL ADDRESS, FOR DEBIT CARD DETAILS LEAVE ON NONE
Confirm new ID via email.
Back to App Store. POKEMON GO WILL NOW BE VISIBLE WHEN YOU SEARCH FOR IT
DOWNLOAD APP
ONCE COMPLETE CHANGE LOCATION BACK TO UK
OPEN POKEMON GO AND OFF YOU GO

so I've just been to my nearest gym which is currently being held by the Red team (I'm blue). I won my matches, however it is still Red... what gives, I thought if you win you then turn your gym to your colour i.e. Blue.

I tried going back into another match at the gym, and it said I was too far away.... but I hadn't moved from before.

any ideas?

You need to beat a gym multiple times until the rating is zero before you can take it over.

It says you are too far away because the location tracking is pretty abysmal to be fair! It's not the most polished of apps Hopefully it will get a bit better when the servers calm down.

I ended up creating a US account in iTunes. Was a bit of a faff really because it wouldn't let me proceed without putting in a billing address (unlike the instructions around the net suggest) so just stuck some random Mulberry Drive, Beverley Hills 90210 one in there and finally got it to work.

I created a new apple ID with USA set to location with a random US address and phone number from Google on desktop with another gmail account, then logged into that account on my iPhone. Worked first time.

I can confirm this does not work. a friend of mine has been to central park (which he says has an insane amount of Pokestops and Gyms) and he has also been to the Grand Canyon.

It got him a 6 hour "Soft" ban, he now cannot catch Pokemon for 6 hours

Yep, as Ingress players will tell you, the dev team are pretty hot on catching those hacking the game and will lay waste with the ban hammer if provoked.

Most hacks wont work as the majority of the information is stored server side and they can easily spot large distance jumps over short periods of time.
