Urgh... exactly the sort of mindless grind I can't abide anymore.
I really don't understand people who talk about the "grind". If you just pick up Destiny (or similar) to play for fun then there is no grind.

The grind only comes when you feel you have to be at a certain level or complete specific tasks - my tip, play for fun.

I'm in my 40's, and I've played everything at some point. Battlefield, started with 1942. Anybody remember Freelancer, loved that game. I'm just a petrolhead though, and I get no greater thrill than ragging a car around a track, so for me my PC is a way to do that virtually. With a full rig, wheel, shifter and pedals I'm virtually there. Triple screens mean it's like looking through the windshield.

I love my racing games, and if I'm just chilling I have Eurotruck/American truck simulator. Of course it all depends on whether the kids need running around as life gets busy sometimes. Precious free time spent doing something I enjoy, can't beat it.

I still play games daily but have gone off new games.

Still love Kane's Wrath and Heroes of Might and Magic 3 but the WOG version. Brilliant game that got a much needed update smile

the grind is doing the same thing over again, a lot of games do this as they are lazy and want to pad the game out. i played destiny, definitely a lot of grinding.

doom was good until the end when it went a bit pants but still good old school fun.

You,call,it grind which Implies you don't enjoy it. I call it playing the game because I do enjoy it. Maybe it is because I don't take items so seriously and just enjoy playing for the sake of playing.

I like FPS... GoW and I like the ME series... but I lost all my friends I used to play with, some not interested, some got old, some had kids, etc...

I have my games I play alone... some strategy games I have been on for way to long, but after 10 years they are dying a death and I need to look at them once a week, kind of ones Im top 20-50 on 3 global servers so no-one can do any real damage so its boring now.

I havent picked up a controller in 2-3 years as the X360 is at a friends place since I lent it to him to play GTA 5, Its a shame really and would love to get back into it.

I probably did the same as you about that age, rarely playing games (having been a big PC gamer since early teens) in favour of other media. I'm now playing games more (at mid-30s) and even getting into multiplayer (which I never did when I was younger). Maybe it's just a natural saturation point that you're not experiencing anything new from it and need other experiences.

On the gaming note, I highly recommend Squad, it's a more tactical and slower-paced FPS (milsim) than BF/COD and similar, with a strong emphasis on teamwork.

I completed the GTA5 single player in 3 weeks shortly after buying the game and I haven't played it since. Same with Halo5 as well...

I'd rather just browse the Internet....
I think developers tend to put little effort into the single player campaigns now (unless it's dominant in the game, like The Witcher series or Skyrim, etc.) as the player base and money is generally in multiplayer. MW2 was my first foray back into gaming a year or so ago and I finished the single player in about 4 or 5 hours - if I'd spent £30 or £40 on the game I'd feel quite short-changed (as a predominantly-single player player), but as it only cost me £5 or £6 I wasn't too bothered.

Grind is just a term for the gameplay in (usually) RPGs involving building up levels, stats and equipment and isn't directly related to the plot. It's not in and of itself a negative term; some players like that phase, others don't.

Your tastes change but also you just get older.

A couple of side effects of getting older is if you give up a twitch shooter game for 2months it takes you ages to get longer to get back to a decent standard (where as the strategic mind gets more cunning). Also your gaming social circle will start to drop off one by one as Wimmen, sprogs and life disurpt their time as well.

I bought Battlefield1 2 weeks ago which is the first BF I've bought but I just can't get into it. Everyone seems to be so damn good at games which always takes away the fun from it when you get a score of around 5-15. I have bought every single COD game from MW to BlackOps3 and I was COD mad but now, nah....
I think the BF series requires a more tactical approach, working as a team and in your squad. I understand COD is more a free-for-all?

Due to the age of my PC, the last BF game I played was BF3 and considering I was already in my 40s with an average spec PC, I would still occasionally get close to a top score in a game because I didn't just go wading in*.

* - but basically camped or spammed. wink Seriously, though, if you work in a squad with a clue, you will do well.

I have an xbox one and use it mainly for driving games (PCars, AC, SLRE, DiRT, F1 16), have TX wheel, racing seat TX pedals etc the whole lot and its great as i convince myself its for a purpose which is practice when i can't get to a track day...
It doesn't feel like playing a game sometimes!
Having said that i do have normal games and just enjoying Dying Light at the moment, wonderful game, i think sometimes when the kids are in bed and the Wife watching Downton or flicking her bean over Poldark I have that stolen 1 or 2 and its great!
This weekend though when she went to visit her sister i over dosed and by Sunday was missing my kids...
Within 20 mins of the kids being back i wanted to stick the xbox back on...

Genre tastes are changing, I used to be obsessed with racing games and would sink hours into them for the next car / best garage etc. Online pvp and personal tastes with certain grinds stops me playing (GTA Online & FFXI for example)

Now I play alot of single player games (Tomb Raider, Witcher 3) and I have my truck simulators which has led me on to learning to use photoshop and now I'm giving 3D modelling a bash which is fun as I'm trying to apply what I've learnt to more practical things.

The thing I'm struggling with the most now is using my console for anything, I haven't turned on my PS4 in months and my xbox has gone back into it's box. Never thought I'd switch to PC but the one I've got is so nice and the range of games is alot broader smile

Whats your point? I mean other than to say you own a PC and somehow that elevates you above console players? I do not get why you'd pretend to be driving a truck? Do you get to murder prostitutes?

If you fancy something different then you can't really go wrong with PSVR if you already have a PS4.

Complete break from the norm and a surprisingly good experience.

Questioning what people play is very poor form when across all hardware choices there are so many different types to choose from. However I would love to know what you play? Just so I can avoid becoming a narrow minded grump like you.

To help you along I'm not suggesting either is better than the other and that along with genre tastes changing even hardware choices can change. It has surprised me because it's been over 15 years on consoles I thought I would just stop playing games rather than moving onto anything else.

There seems to be far more community on consoles compared to pc.

Just look at how many pistonhead members play gta, battlefield, destiny etc together , it seems the pc gamers are quite happy to play solo enjoying the better graphics.

I don't necessarily think so - there are huge communities around PC and AFAIK no major E-sports leagues or competitions around console games. Look at CS:GO, Overwatch, League of Legends, Dota 2 and then all the MMOs like World of Warcraft, Day Z, Eve Online etc. etc.

I've played a few clan games in Squad, but I don't know any other PHers who play Squad.

Apologies I missed your post. It seems that both of us do something repetitive for fun, it's just you have a problem with my free choice of game despite it being in the same category, so my narrow minded point still remains.

Bigger communities are worse than the smaller niche communities, the swtor and eve-online communities are awesome.
