I wasn't saying it was a bad thing, just an observation.....some people are so touchy!
That did end up a bit of a rant didn't it? hehe It wasn't intended to sound as red faced as it did reading it back, and although 'you' was used a lot I wasn't intending it to be directed at your post specifically, more just the general back in my day / don't like change style of arguments in the thread (having now finished the game I read through the thread in one go before posting, so who said what was well lost by the time I wrote the response)

Definitely reads a bit touchy though hehegetmecoat

I think it's the interactiveness of it that I have a problem with. It feels rather malicious to make the player play as Abby after that event, and I fully understand that the aim of playing as her for several hours is for the player to sympathise with her, etc. That's not to say either that I think Joel and Ellie should've lived happily ever after either. I see that mentioned often, but it's a bit of a trite response (no offence). I would fully accept Joel or indeed Ellie dying, if I felt it was done in service of a well crafted story.. I feel, and it's a subjective opinion of course, is that as technically brilliant as the game is I can't shake the belief - enforced by Druckmann's behaviour on Twitter - that he had a clear objective to shock and punish people in the first instance, with the trajectory of the game following from that.
Oh no offence taken at all, in fact I think that's fair, it wasn't exactly a constructive argument on my side to suggest that because one doesn't like how Joel was killed / playing as Abby that only a fairy tale ending would have been satisfactory

I've been mercifully oblivious to Druckmann so was fortunate to play the game uninfluenced, and as is so often the case it sounds like perhaps ignorance was bliss.

That is a real shame that you're likely to miss out on the game as a result of internet noise. Perhaps if you can pick up a used copy, thus resting assured you're not contributing any money to Druckmann's pockets it'll be an easier pill to swallow... scratchchin

Anyway, cheers for bearing with me and actually discussing stuff as opposed to (quite rightly) just calling me an arse and moving on with your day beer
You sound like a thoroughly nice chap smile

Finally completed.

What an incredible game. Never seen a game like that pull at the emotions so much- I was furious at ‘the twist’ in gameplay yet played on and it made the ending even more brutal. Far more than usual. An interesting lesson in psychology and no wonder the internet is so up in arms about it 😂

I thought the first game was one of the most overrated pieces of media out there. To me the game play was lacking and the story was quite generic and predictable.

I wasn't going to play Part 2 so wasn't t bothered when I saw some of the spoilers when it leaked. I knew Joel was going to die and you would play as Abby at some point . However, when the game started getting some controversy it piqued my interest and I thought why not give it a go.

I finished the game about a week and half ago now and I really liked it, would give it 8.5/10. The game play seemed tighter, the story a lot less predictable and interesting twist in making you play the 'bad guy' , who I actually ended up liking more than Ellie. Anyway since finishing the game I moved onto Final Fantasy 7 but just couldn't get into it as the story was lacking in comparison, then tried Days Gone which I also found lacking. I can only put this down to how good TLOU 2 actually was.

It was one of the games like Witcher 3 and Death Stranding, once you complete it it left me with an empty void. I am now taking a couple weeks break before starting my next game. Credit where credit is due TLOU 2 is a brilliant game.

P.S. Didn't find there to be too much SJW bullst in the game either.

You might want to wrap some spoiler tags around bits of that smile

I'd agree that the 'game' elements were far better polished than the original, although conversely for me I found myself less invested in the second one story wise, although it was told very well.

Interesting that you rate Death Stranding, I put a good amount of hours in to it (big MGS fan, thus any Hideo Kojima game is going to get a good go) and although very unique to play, I found I stopped playing one day and I've not been back since (no spoilers please just in case wink )

Sorted the spoiler tags now...oops

I loved Death Stranding. I just thought the story was so unique. However I do appreciate that is going to be a divisive game.

I've just started playing this and I've avoided any detail around the criticisms so I have no idea what I'm letting myself in for (although I suspect the sexuality and protagonist selection has annoyed some). I loved the first one.

Probably try and avoid this thread until you finish, then come back and give your thoughts. smile

I really enjoyed it.

Interesting that you mention Days Gone, as I really enjoyed that, particularly the open world of it and the story was also pretty good, in fact for at least the first 4-5 hours of game play, I wasn't entirely sure what was going on what the over-arching point of the story was. However I absolutely loved it. TLOU1, I got with the console and although I enjoyed it and definitely connected with it the linear game play got to me after a while, which is probably why I really enjoy open world so much more.
I'll get TLOU2 when it hits CEX and the same with Death Stranding, but I'm currently getting my Zombie killing fix from Dying Light, another game I'm currently really enjoying, even though I've done hardly any story based missions and am just enjoying running around on side quests.
I'll run through Days Gone again, but I doubt I'll do TLOU again. I really hope they release a 2nd Days Gone.

Completed my second, more relaxed run through the other night on Hard+ mode; got the platinum trophy too so that’s me done with it for a while. Story makes much more sense second time round; not a perfect game but definitely not the dumpster fire that a lot of people seemed to think it was.

I really enjoyed it.
No idea how far through I am (just finished the flashbacks after the pregnancy news).

I like the storyline. It's just a storyline. It's just not a storyline with straight people at the centre.

It was a bit formulaic in that you get a cutscene and then you go clear some location and rinse and repeat. At least it's stepping up a bit now where it's harder to clear human areas. The dogs piss me off. Bow makes a huge difference though biggrin

And that section with Joel and that massive fat beast that you just have to run round and round trying to avoid until he finally beats it to death! I died too many times.....

If the criticisms are about the supposed forced agenda in the storyline, that's not a valid criticism, that's just butthurt.

I think a lot of people, myself included, were disappointed in the way the new story went.

Because it's 2019 2020 and if you dislike something it's because you're a bigot this got conflated into some "movement" that had to be resisted and cancelled at the cost of any nuanced debate.

Personally, having seen the story beats from the leaks, I knew I wouldn't want to play as Abby after the pivotal event. I found out from player reviews after the game came out that I would have to play as her for several hours. I also found out that in some cases people, probably with a similar mindset to me, found this too demotivating and stopped playing.

That's not to say that the game is objectively bad, or that there isn't the chance that one might learn to sympathise with Abby's situation. I get that. For me though I don't want to have to go through this process, hating the character for a significant part of it, perhaps even after finding out her own burdens, etc.

To me it seems - and this is borne out by how Druckmann has behaved on Twitter afterwards - that he wanted to push buttons with this game in terms of the manner in which the story was told, the shock factor involved, etc. It is trite to me to suggest that someone playing TLOU2 and being unhappy with this story structure must necessarily have wanted "happy endings" and Joel & Ellie living happily ever after. That is not the case at all. This is another byproduct of the polarising attitude towards the game and people who didn't enjoy it.

I'm happy to be told by people who have played it that they enjoyed it, obviously. I just know I wouldn't, and I know that before I try and play it. I know I will be angered by the pivotal event, and I absolutely will not enjoy playing as Abby. I don't have the inclination to sit through something I know I'll have an emotional disconnect with.

One man's wine is another man's poison, etc.

Yet you keep commenting on a thread about a game you dont want to play...

We get it, you dont like how its panned out, thats completely fine - everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Just leave the thread to those that enjoyed/are currently enjoying the game.

I'm curious to see if my views are in a minority or not, and I'm always willing to be challenged by different viewpoints on it. That's surely a more productive and academic way of approaching it than trolling the thread and disappearing?

I didn't realise this thread was supposed to be an echo chamber of positive vibes, or that you had any say in moderating it.

No, but when you reiterate your view of the game in almost all your posts it gets a little tiring.

I chose not to view any leaks or spoilers, i didnt know about any of the twists. I wasnt thrilled about playing as Abby but by the end of it i came to prefer her over Ellie - which i think is the view of most.

It’s the view of me - once switched back, the choices Ellie made weren’t the ones I’d have taken if allowed to steer my own path!

That's interesting, playing as Abby I was ultimately uninvested in her for a fair amount of it, I enjoyed the game as a 'game', but playing as Ellie again was far more enjoyable for me, I still felt invested in her as a character far more, and still didn't like Abby.

It's also interesting to hear that some player's views changed against Ellie. Having a mix between the two and not just a game guided bias one way or the other seems like a success on the part of the writers to me, regardless of whatever someone has posted on social media to gain attention / wind people up.

Finished it yesterday, loved it completely.

The story was very powerful and the descent of Ellie into a desperate killer bent on revenge and filled with hate to the point where she will abandon her love and the child she's raising was very good and i found it thought provoking. Especially after her being almost innocent throughout the first game (cannibal section aside). I really enjoyed the Abby story arc and her growth as a character almost in the opposite direction to Ellie as she had already got her revenge but realised it had alienated her from her friends in a way

The game play was very slick and varied, really enjoyed some of the set pieces and was always on edge when creeping around. Some moment genuinely scared the life out of me. Obviously it was visually stunning too

the way this game made me feel, especially after murdering everyone including Alice the dog and then getting to know them all left me really torn about who deserved to live and find happiness

the ending was perfect for me, left it up to me to decide how i feel and what might be for the main characters

I have an Xbox One and a Switch but I've half a mind to buy a PS4 to give this game a whirl, along with Ghost of Tsushima (not sure if I spelt that correctly!).

I haven't played the first TLOU though - would it be worth playing through that first?

You don't have to as the flashbacks in TLOU2 do fill you in on the backstory, but the game is cheap as chips now so would recommend that you do (plus the DLC which i think comes as part of the remastered package for the PS4). It'll also help you get on board with the game mechanics/controls etc as they are exactly the same (but a bit more polished) in #2.
