Then don't play the game, rather than having a big hissy fit on the internet because it's not what you wanted. They are telling the story they want to tell, and taking it in a different direction. Happens all the time in other media.
Of course it's just a massive coincidence that this whingeing from the basement dwellers coincides with playing as a female lead instead of gruff beardy self insert, but there you go.

If you purposefully mislead people in trailers and dramatically change 2 characters just for the sake of shock value, expect a backlash. Oh, and the "progressive" side is just as angry about it as well

Funny how none of these "basement dwellers" were complaining about playing as Ellie in parts of the first game, or as women in Tomb Raider, Horizon Zero Dawn, Resident Evil, Neir Automata, Gears of War, Alien Isolation etc etc
Critically acclaimed normally means boring and the critics seem to be gushing over this one.
I'll pass on this one until it hits the bargain bucket (which if meta-critic is to be believed won't be too long) - not that I'm lacking in games to play at the moment.

Just because the director wanted to tell his story, doesn't mean we should just sit back and purchase his magnum opus without complaint.

Too bad that Druckmann wanted to make some sort of point with the characters and tone of story ... from what I've seen the game is great on a technical level - almost Next Gen - just as the original was when it came out on the PS3.
What really made the original such a great game however was the story and characters. A lot of the gameplay was merely OK and could get a bit repetitive (some very good setpiece moments though). But that didn't matter when you had such a story to get engrossed in and characters you could empathise with. It was the first game to really make me feel like I was 'in' the world it created.
I really don't think I want to be engrossed in the story of Part II and the characters now seem very dislikeable.
The ethics of the studio are somewhat questionable too with regard to how they really screwed over their employees on this release, over and above that which is considered 'normal' in the video games biz. Not to mention how they aggressively went after Youtubers for talking about the resulting leaks (which were clearly the result of a disaffected employee no matter how much they try to pass it off as a random hack).
I've started this without any knowledge of the storyline. I enjoyed the original so much that this was a no-brainer purchase.
I'm probably 3 hours in so far, I think the relationship between the main characters is weaker than the first in the series and in a lot of ways that's what made the first game as good as it was. The storyline so far is OK - nothing spectacular. Graphically it's great.
If I have to fuel up one more generator though...!

Did anyone order from simply games? Said it was dispatched Thursday but no sign of it yet.
As for all th reviews and that nonsense, not interested, I loved the first one and was always going to buy the second one, I'll see for myself whether I enjoy it or not.

I read the spoilers, cancelled my preorder off the back of them. From what I gather the biggest leaks are on point (hard not to be given they involve rendered cinematically)
I imagine it’s a brilliant game technically and no doubt the story is expansive like the first...
I have zero interest in playing Abby though. None. Or any other character that kills one of the protagonists from TLOU. Maybe that’s a close minded view, and it’s not that I think Joel is some virtuous character that deserves to not to die, but I’m not interested in playing a character that is part of his demise.

Critically acclaimed normally means absolute garbage.
FTFY.Graphically, it looks good, story line looks terrible.
I like this kind of game, I liked TLOU. A skim of the plot of this one and I'm out.
I managed to avoid the whole spoiler hooha despite being eager for this to come out. Played around 6 hours last night (have just managed to escape from the School, for those who know) and I'm not disappointed. The graphics look amazing on PS4 Pro with a 4k TV, game play and mechanics aren't changed much which is a good thing IMO, and the atmosphere, music, sound design and mo-cap acting is outstanding. That said it doesn't feel like a revolution from the original, more evolution but I'm good with that, I'm happy to be back in that world with those characters.
Having now looked at what the whole spoiler thing was about I think context is everything. As I'm only 6 hours in I've only played as Abby twice but I can't imagine they'll make you play as her again after what she did at the lodge, as you have zero investment in her safety/story arc. But we'll see

Criticlly aclaimed can be a good thing, however, once if the game is taking a lead on a 'cause' then leftie critics could have deliberately give it top marks for the leftie angle. So you have to be more suspicious.
What 'leftie cause' is the LoU2 taking on?- a lesbian
- a Jewish bisexual woman
- her ex, an Asian man who is totally chilled about her raising his baby with another woman
- an insanely muscled, possibly trans woman
- a trans child
- a straight white man who gets killed almost straight away
Not exactly Duke Nukem when it comes to social views
