That's the problem with first party Nintendo titles, they set an absurdly high bar that few other games can reach.

My 5 year old played through most of Mario Odyssey, it was a joy to watch, such an inventive game. We've also really enjoyed Yoshi's Crafted World and Luigi's Mansion 3, both great co-op games.

We are getting Mario 3D World in a few weeks, it's supposed to be one of the best Mario games, really looking forward to playing it with him.
We (39 year old couple...) are loving Mario 3D World 2 player, it's really varied, fun, interesting, the difficultly level is quite varied as sometimes you need to rush through a jumping puzzle map, some are slow and need a lot of thought. It's a great game.
I've only played the first 5 minutes of Bowser's Fury and it's quite intense and dark! It's almost like a Godzilla game having to dodge lumps of lava falling down with a 'scary' soundtrack over the top. Maybe it's all unicorns and rainbows later hehe

I bought Super Mario Maker for my son, as he wanted to play it with his mates. As he is only 8 he just plays around with other peoples stages and creates some very basic stuff and gets bored quickly, which compared to the potential scale of Oddessy (which I wish I'd bought now) seems a bit of a waste. Does anyone know how to get the best out of this game?
Did you buy physical or online? If the former, sell it on.

Splatoon 2 is mariokart of shootemups. My five year old is starting to get to grips with it now. So he usually plays the round and I tackle players he cannot beat when he chucks me the remote.

My son really got into it, takes a while to get used to the controls but you can make some amazing levels. He'd make me a level that I had to try and complete, some were pure evil.

Sticking to the 3D World setting seemed to be best for kids, who doesn't like cats?!

Yep, good safe fun for little ones. No voice chat or anything to worry about. Match making seems reasonably good too, my son is always teamed up against people he has a reasonable chance with!

Just to add to this, we played the level "Beep Block Skyway" last night and I can honestly say it's one of the most fun levels of any computer game I've played, there are blocks that disappear/reappear depending every so often and it's the music that lets you know when they change.
Here's someone who knows what they're doing playing it, you really have to have the sound on to appreciate how it works

Does anyone else use a controller other than the standard joy-cons? We could do with something a bit bigger and see there is quite a selection out there.

We have two as we've basically given up on the joycons (currently back in for their second fix in 12 months), they only get used for Ring Fit and Mario Party.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller - Probably the best, most comfortable controller I've used full stop. Has the full range of functionality including Amiibo scanning and can still be used for motion control (i.e. as a pointer in Mario Galaxy or aiming arrows in Breath of the Wild)

8BitDo SN30Pro+ - Cheaper than the Switch Pro controller but really nice to use. You don't get any Switch specific functionality with it but that's fine for 90% of games. We have a few 8BitDo controllers knocking around, they are fantastic quality, up there with original stuff.

The bad news is these break fairly easily within the year also. I had one repaired/replaced by Nintendo and it took two month, I bought a second one and that broke eventually and also repaired. They have seen some hours of use though, but in comparison xbox 360 pads too 00s/000s of hours of gaming without faltering.

I've been buying repair kits for the joy cons when the buttons or joysticks start playing up. Fiddly as everything is very small but pretty straightforward as the broken components usually unplug or plug back in in obvious places. There's plenty of Youtube videos showing you how to fix them if you get stuck.

Another question - I really enjoyed playing Breath of The Wild, I don't have any other games console, so onot played any other games, so are there any other comparable open world puzzle type games on the Switch? I was thinking that Skyrim looks like a good shout, but it's 10 years old, so might be quite a step back from BOTW, Witcher 3 doesn't look like it's a successful port to the Switch either.

BOTW set the bar quite high so little else manages to come close.

Witcher 3 is a staggeringly good port considering the limitations of the hardware. Clearly it doesn't offer quite the graphical fidelity of the XBO or PS4 versions, but everything is intact and it's certainly not a compromised experience on Switch. I can't recommend it enough, certainly if you've never played it before. It's very narrative driven and less open world than BOTW though.

Immortals Fenyx rising is also a decent game with strong BOTW vibes.

Skyrim is also good on Switch, although it's the vanilla version without mods.

For anyone who missed it. Nintendo's Switch event happened a couple of days ago: https://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-direct/02-17-202...

BOTW2 was mentioned. More to come this year, but a firm release date wasn't stated. So could be this year, or next.

Great thanks, I'll see if I can get hold of any of these.

Don't think you can play it in handheld tho, I did, and text isn't rendered any bigger, so unless you're able to read a microfiche with the naked eye it's a waste of time.

Went with one of these and it's working really well so far, thanks for the recommendation smile

Switch Pro (aka Super Nintendo Switch) looks set to come out by end of this year. 7" OLED screen and 4k docked output are known upgrades. The OLED is 720p though.

720p still. That's a bit of a letdown...

I imagine because they want to keep the price down?

I have a phone with a better screen but it cost a lot more than a Switch does. And Nintendo won't want to charge anymore than a ps5 or xbox s x, so £450 is highest they could sell it for.

Battery.

720p uses a lot less battery than 1080p and a hell of a lot less than 4k.

Also, on a 7" screen 720p OLED will look considerably better than 1080p LCD and anything more than 1080p on a 7" screen will be of no benefit anyway.

The 7" OLED will look amazing, the new hardware will upscale or even allow developers to patch games to show in proper 4k, so I think this will be a great upgrade.

New version https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Nintendo-Switch-Family/...

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2021-05-27-nint...

7" OLED, 64GB internal storage, better speakers, better kickstand, network port in the dock, white controller/dock option.

No 4k output, same battery life, same 720 screen resolution. $350 in America.

Whaddyathink?
