I doubt it'll put even a slight dent in Switch sales, it's an absolute juggernaut and the software sales are bonkers. The games that are selling in huge numbers (and for periods of time that are basically unheard of these days) are typically first party child/young adult friendly.

I love my Switch, best console I've ever owned, and I have a Steam Deck on order, but I really don't see them competing with each other directly.

Switch was released in 2017. All those 10 years olds are turning 15 and may want to play more adult games.

Most importantly, if it does well, then Sony/Microsoft will take note.

I own a switch and as a 40 Yr old I'd like to play more mature games but I'm not a hard-core gamer anymore and the new c9nsole from the BBC article sounds like more hassle than I could be bothered with already with talk of games compatibility and some games not being fully functioning on a handheld console amongst other technicalities I just couldn't be bothered with.

The switxh is great because I stick in a game chip and off I go, it's perfect for casual gaming.

I'm sure the Steam Deck will be a great piece of kit but like you say, it's not exactly going to be plug and play like the Switch.

Even for fully compatible games, there are graphical tweaks you can make in the settings that can adjust the battery life by literally hours. It's necessarily a far more complex beast.

There's a reason Nintendo is the only original surviving games company (before the multinationals moved in) still making hardware, and that the Switch has now become Nintendo's best selling console and recently moved ahead of both the Wii and the Playstation to become the fifth best selling console in history. I think it could take number three spot and overtake the PS4, with it's recent mild upgrade, not even a significant upgrade!
Nintendo make the games no-one else will, that's been the case for over twenty years, anyone who wants a PC/other console will get one, and they'll fight over that share of the market, or rather Sony will keep bhslapping Microsoft, there is significant cross ownership with the Switch, as the Switch owns wholesale the other side of the market.

Anyone here play Swords and Soldiers 2?

Hello

Interested in getting a switch, we had tonnes of fun with Wii sports, so keen to give Switch sports a go, my missus also likes the look of the ring fit game.

My question, there's an Oled version available locally on Facebook, with 14 games downloaded on it, which seems a good deal. The seller says I can just take over the account? Is it that straight forward to switch over accounts and just add our bank details, and still keep the downloaded games? Anything else I should be aware of in this scenario?

Thanks

I'm not sure how straightforward it is, if they can show you whilst they change the account email and so on over then it shouldn't be too bad, but you'd want that done before handing the money over or they could just recover the account on their email and you'd lose access.

When buying a 2nd hand console that includes things like "comes with 10 games already downloaded", personally in my years of experience with this, I wouldn't pay more than a £10 extra for all the downloaded games compared to buying a identical console that is factory wiped with no included games.

They are kidding themselves that it is part of the sales pitch and part of the extra increased sale cost of their console. There is too much risk and too much hassle. If they wanted to release the value of their purchased games they should have bought physical games and sold them seperately on ebay/gumtree/CEX trade in.

Cheers

I'd be more inclined to buy a Switch from a seller who has the foresight to wipe it clean, I can't see how taking on an account from somebody else you have no link to whatsoever is going to work out. It's not really a selling point and I can't see how it would do anything but limit your options in future (if you want to keep the games).

Whilst it's now a bit old school, for first party Nintendo games buying physical is by far the most cost effective way of gaming. Buy used and a mainline title (Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing etc) will essentially be worth what you paid for it if you decide to sell. Breath of the Wild is 5 years old and if you bought used shortly after launch you could sell it today for the price you paid!

Not me sadly, I'm having trouble deleting/managing game data on the Switch, even with an extra data card.

I've just ordered a cartridge of No Man's Sky, I haven't followed its long and chequered history, but it seems to be getting really good reviews about the port to the Switch.

I'm hoping it turns into a more easily accessible version of a galaxy combat & explorer along the lines of Elite (this dates me....), with Breath of The Wild single player open world (s) play.

My kid isn't far off being able to enjoy a handheld console in moderation, so I can probably get away with buying something on the joint account...

I was thinking about steam deck, but now looking at the switch after I noticed factorio and rocket league are available on it.

One thing about the steam deck that appeals is the option for Netflix type services like xbox games pass (presuming it works for that?)

I don't really fancy paying 40 quid a game.

Or is there an new switch on the horizon?

Can't comment on many of the questions, but where the Switch is handy is the fact it's portable. Great for the odd occasion where they're on a flight / at the airport / stuck in the car.

Well a few hours of No Man's Sky and I'm a little bit bored... Sure, its a great way to whittle away a couple of hours, looks good and gameplay is easy enough, but I can lose hours mainly because everything takes so flaming long and to do relatively simple things is very c complicated... I love the fact it's very open ended, but it is, what I guess is the right sort of word, a complete grindfest. And reminds me a little too much like being at work (where I spend most of my time fixing issues and shoving emails from place to place to get a result)!

I'm just about to go through the process of gathering al the resources and craft the raw materials to build a hyperdrive to get me out of the introductory solar system, where things might open up a bit, so I'll see if things get any better.

A couple of things I have noted so far: I really hope the planets, landscapes, fauna and flora change form place, but the three planets I have visited so far are pretty much the same, which will make exploring the galaxy a bit dull.

Also - and this is an issue with the game graphics, is that it doesn't draw in the landscape features until you are just passing over them - volcanoes, so exploring planets by sight is impossible as you can't see distinguishing features a way off and head for them.

I think I might have a go in Creation mode, with unlimited resources, so I can just get on with things and mess about building ships and bases.

My Son, who is a veteran at Minecraft and Fortnight can't be bothered with it.

Not quite, but with the expansion pass you get access to Mario kart and animal crossings, plus splatoon.

You also get access to a lot of older games they’ve ported, so lots of n64 and mega drive games.

There are others which are free too, it varies a bit in terms of quality but rocket league is a big favourite at the moment again in our house. Minecraft was a worthwhile investment too. Starting out, it’s not a bad selection really, then you can work out what they enjoy playing and the 40 becomes less of a risk.

I'd say the Steam Deck is a bit too complex and open for a young child. You can pretty much use it like a Switch, but you're literally just a button press away from the Steam Store and some fairly adult content.

Switch is perfect in that respect, and if you're willing to buy physical and sell once you're done it's extremely cost effective. First party games barely depreciate at all.

Hello. Looking for some complete noob advice please, as the Nintendo "help" pages, well, haven't been particularly helpful.

I have bought a Switch OLED for my kids this Christmas. How should I go about structuring accounts/profiles, please?

I cannot find clear direction on whether:

a) The device has one account (an adult), with all other users having profiles against which they can save their game play progress.
b) The device has one account, but different users cannot save individual progress on the same game (i.e. tough cookies).
c) Each individual user needs an account. An adult can set these up.
d) Each individual user needs an account. An adult can set these up, using a "master" account to have authority over the others.
e) Other scenario I haven't thought of.

I am a complete console novice, so please be gentle with me! biggrin

Many thanks in advance!

I’ve bought them for mine this Xmas too, option D is closest.

Worth doing it all now or they won’t get on till boxing day!!

And be thankful the parental controls are easier than Sony!!
