I’ve bought them for mine this Xmas too, option D is closest.

Worth doing it all now or they won’t get on till boxing day!!

And be thankful the parental controls are easier than Sony!!
Thanks DoubleSix. Is an account absolutely necessary to be able to play if the games are physical cards, not online purchases? I'm wondering whether I can do away with all that jazz and operate on simple player profiles on-device?

Not too sure tbh, as I’ve boxed ‘em back up.

You’ll want patches and presumably parental controls etc so not having properly joining the eco system will likely cause more annoyance than it solves I’d imagine.

It’s really not that hard, just get stuck in and work through it.

Fair dos. A task for tomorrow, in that case!

Just wrapped it and popped it under the tree.

I genuinely think they might squeal when they realise hehe

You need to have an account (if I recall correctly, ages since I set ours up!), but the kids don’t, they’ll effectively be profiles. Download the Nintendo family app, you can set it up in there once you have the device setup. Login with the same account details and you can control a lot of it from there, it’s way easier to type stuff in on your phone than on the switch!

Disable online purchasing and the like, and set the profile up as you wish, so how do friends link to them etc (if at all, you can disable all that).

I picked up a used switch Oled yesterday with the kids Christmas money and they’re enjoying it so far.

They have Mario Kart and Mario Party which can be played as 4 player. I’d be happy to invest in additional controllers for this so we can play as a family but what would be best to purchase? Another pair of joy cons or two ‘pro’/Xbox style controllers? If they’d get more use out of the Xbox style for other games I’d buy them - the joycons are tiny laugh

Is OEM stuff worth the premium over aftermarket. If anyone has a decent suggestion from Amazon/Argos it’d be appreciated!

Also a question about online membership - is £60 for a family online account with expansion pack worthwhile? The kids (6&8) have friends and cousins with Switches, but no idea how often (or whether it’s a good idea) for them to have online access.

I just buy vouchers from Amazon, 3 months for 7 quid (single user ). The old games you get included are good and the expansion pack gets some N64 and Megadrive games which I’m tempted by.

Be careful about 2 factor authentication- make sure you write down the access codes. It uses google Authenticator which only works on the device (e.g. phone) you set it up on. Change phone, no access unless you migrate it at the time or have the codes. I’m locked out of mine now unless I ring Nintendo. At least it’s secure!

I'd go for the Nintendo Pro controllers desputw costing more. I've repaired a couple of joycons with parts, and bought a couple of new ones but the dreaded drift still returns in no time at all. The pro controller I bought my sole has put up with 2 yrs of abuse without issue. From what I've heard, 3rd party Co trolleys aren't very good (unless anyone can recommend a cheaper one!)

Mario Party needs joy-cons if I remember correctly.

We have 8BitDo pads (loads of models, the SN30 Pro+ is awesome) which are superb, better build than Nintendo OEM ones.

Hi all,

Santa was good enough to bring us a Switch as a family present, and have to say loving it so far. Was a bit fiddly to get going with the shop and the access and all that but the games are just brilliant.

We’ve got Mario Kart - which my daughter spent ages playing on Christmas Day, both single and multi player (we play it a fair bit in the arcades). Also got the Mario Kart Live track game which is amazing - truly innovative gaming fun right there!! amongst a couple of others is Assasins Creed which I’m currently playing and have to say I’ve never been so immersed in a game before. It’s like playing a film, and you choose the speed and detail of the story. Incredible!!

So, something for everyone - including Switch Sports for all of us to play like we do on the Wii.

Brilliant stuff Nintendo!

My boys got a few interesting bits this Christmas (neither of them "new school")...

Eldest got "Zelda - Breath of the Wild". It was a "risk" purchase as he'd never expressed any interest in it, but he absolutely loves it. Totally immersed in it.

Youngest got Labo ToyCon 3. This is the vehicle drive kit and it's brilliant. Plenty of enjoyment building the (very cleverly designed) components, and loving playing the games.

(Eldest got the Labo VR stuff last year...also good. But the games/content for using with it isn't as good).

Get 1Password for your password management and put your MFA codes in there.

Whilst you should still keep your backup codes somewhere safe, something like 1Password, IMO, is far more resilient. I have a print off of my 1Password secret/master codes/whatever with our passports, and ditto a copy which the in laws have in a sealed envelope with our will.... just in case the house burns down and I can get into *none* of my accounts.

Just accepted a new role and my end date here should be the 12th of May, so going to engineer in a week break for some Zelda time.

That looks amazing! Just back from watching Mario at the cinema and there was a shortened version of it amongst the trailers.

We (aged 48, 13 & 8) have all been replaying BOTW again while we wait for the new one. I’ve completed it (except Koroks) twice now and my 13 year old is still so annoyingly much better than I am at fighting the Ganons.

My kid started BotW at 6 years old (during lockdown) and quickly streaked ahead of me. By the summer he'd finished it on Master Mode as well!

We're literally counting the days on the calendar in our household.

Gonna be lots of Switches acquired in the next few weeks - prices will shoot up no doubt.

My son played BOTW to death and then sold his Switch. He is planning to buy another one before the next game drops.

We currently have one switch in the house with 3 profiles on it- mine(primary), Mrs and daughter and I believe the family online membership.

Struggling to get any game time on it between daughter on Minecraft and Mrs on Pokemon Violet! Can only see this getting worse when Hogwarts Legacy comes out!

Considering picking up another one. Firstly, is the Oled worth it and, secondly will I have issues transferring profiles across or will I have to start from scratch?

Cheers
