I wouldn't usually suggest it given the likes of 8BitDo make superb 3rd party controllers that are much cheaper yet handle and perform as well as 'official' products, but for the Switch I'd suggest going with the official Pro controller.

There are quite a few quality of life things with it that I'd struggle to be without, started Mario Wonder this morning and was surprised by a lovely little feature that I was not expecting at all via the Pro Controller (I won't spoil it), that you wouldn't get via a third party one. Waking from sleep is another that I couldn't be without.

Off the top of my head it does this:

Wake from sleep
Speaker for some in-game features
Amiibo scanning
HD Rumble
Gyroscopic control

Worth noting Nintendo have A and B switched around Vs XBox and most PC controllers, so unless it's a third party controller specifically designed for Switch the buttons will probably be labelled incorrectly (they will still work fine). Battery life is superb on the Pro, too, and I mean 30-40 hours+ superb rather than 10-15 max you'll get from many others.

Tried doing this with 2 OG switches years ago and they classed gaming in a way that ruled it out from the 20% off. Ended up sending one back because of it as I was gonna try flogging it.
Might have not worked then, works now though, or it did July this year anyway! I opened a credit account, received a discount code, paid off the credit the day it arrived.

Thanks for posting about this deal. Just sorted our sons Christmas present. Switch OLED with Mario Kart, Mario Wonder and Minecraft with £72 discount, not to be sniffed at! I’m not even sure you need a credit account. I clicked on the “pay in full” option. I’ll close the account when it’s delivered thumbup

Did the same in the end. Oled switch with Mario kart then added Mario superstars and luigis mansion which they wanted, plus a few other Xmas bits and took the 20% discount.

Then paid off the credit account.

Sorted. Cheers

For clueless parents and a 5 year old who are considering one of these for some winter family fun, is there anything I should consider when purchasing one? Is there different hardware specs? One that might be future proofed more than others? Suspect it will be used for mario kartd, bowling etc hooked upto the big Tele.

Thanks.
Went for the oled mario karts bundle and bought 2 extra joycon pads. Much fun even though I'm pretty rubbish at it.

Any family friendly game recommendations? Thinking the Sports one with bowling and football etc?

Also see they have GTA Vice City. Might treat myself to that, probably the last time I owned a console!

Also is the monthly expansion subscription worth it over the normal one?

Thanks again all smile

Enjoying Super Mario Wonder at the moment. Pretty family friendly I would say and it can be multiplayer.

Check out the games available for the expansion and see if anything appeals. It’s just about worth it to me but note some N64 games (e.g. Goldeneye) are just about unplayable without a suitable controller.

Any recommendations for controllers for goldeneye? I did notice that and 1080 snowboarding are on it (maybe the latter is coming soon). Fancy dabbling in those for some nostalgia reasons over the winter months.

After a little Switch game advice if possible please chaps. My eldest (10) got a Switch last Xmas and it’s been a roaring success ever since. Mainly Lego games and Minecraft.

This year he’d like the game Jurassic Park Evolution but it appears to be download only rather than being able to buy a physical copy. What’s the best way to go about it, download it Christmas Eve after he’s in bed? I presume downloading it Christmas Day will be a bad idea?

Everything we’ve bought for it so far has been a physical card.

Perhaps buy an SD card, download to the card, then give him the card as a present? Not sure if that’s do-able, never tried.

I've done this before, buy and immediately delete now/whenever an offer is on, then on Christmas eve night go in and let it redownload at night.

Good idea, cheers.

I’ll have to have a little play around with storage on it as I think Evolution is a big game. Pretty sure we bought a card for it but need to check. He’s Minecraft crazy on it normally!

Only if it's never had a 'net connection.

Assuming it has, settings get sync'd to it and are only then overridden locally by knowing the pin, or via another sync.

Glad I hadn’t got around to buying it yet, just need reduced for £49.99 to £14.99! Winner!

I avoid downloading. Use up space amd also if you don't like it you can't sell it. Though I guess you don't need to worry too much for a £14.99 game (perhaps that means it's pretty pants too?)

I guess but it is for the kids rather than the adults and as far as I'm aware it's download only rather than having a physical copy available to buy so not much choice in the matter really!

The trick now is to get it downloaded pre-Xmas without him noticing!

It's a good game, my son has it. Cheap doesn't mean bad, loads of good bargains on the Switch eStore.

Rayman Legends is currently £5.99 on the eShop, genuinely one of the best platformers I've ever played. Worked through the game in two player mode with my son when he was 7, we absolutely loved it.

My youngest (11) really enjoyed it, still plays it today.

He got hollow knight as an extra in his birthday which he’s enjoying, but he loves Zelda and Yokus island express (all of £3.19 in the switch store!) and says it’s a cross between the two.
