When the rest of the world have their eyes on 4k and VR?

FFS.
I know this is straying off topic but IMHO 4k and VR are gimmicks, just like 3D TV was.

I don't believe VR will have any longer lifespan than the 3D TV fad of 2013-2015 - and that was just the latest way for TV manufactures to try and persuade us to upgrade to a new TV set we didn't really need. We all sat with those ridiculous glasses on for a movie (maybe even two) and then they got relegated to a cupboard and we all went back to just watching 2D TV on our 3D set.

And maybe I am missing the point of 4k ... but given the viewing distance of your average living room, on your averaged sized set I'd be amazed if 4k is giving the average viewer anything at all over 1080p. Again, it feels like the latest technological-gimmick no one needs in order to sell us all a new TV.

But then I feel the same way about the Xbox One S and PS4 Pro, neither of which seem like worthwhile 'upgrades' from my existing One and PS4.

Maybe I'm just getting old? But I'm a gaming geek, a total nerd, have a nice amount of disposable income and very little common sense when it comes to gadgets ... and yet VR, 4k, S's and Pro's all seem totally pointless. But (god only knows why) I am extremely excited and hopelessly optimistic about the Switch. My Amazon order on the 3rd of March cannot come soon enough smile
VR is here to stay. The limiting factor right now is computing power, and screen resolution. Once mobile screens are dragged up to 4k standards and the equipment as enough power to push two of them, VR will explode. I think it's a fairly open secret now that the VR firms are holding back until the processing power / screen tech is about there to realise its full potential.

That's not to say it'll replace a flat screen.

It's a shame the Switch - with it's portable screen - couldnt get on the VR wagon. They could have absolutely blown the market open. And is part of the reason I'm pissed off about the power / screen res.

Re; 4k for tellies nd stuff - Gone Girl (and probably many others) was filmed in 8k, then scaled back depending on image composition. 4k is here to stay because Hollywood have invested a huge amount in camera / projection tech.

I'm also a huge fan of home projectors, and some of the 3D movies on a big projector are some of the most impressive images I've seen in ANY media! Haha. That said, I dont have the finances to chuck ten grand at a 4k 3D projector - so I'm hoping 1080 is here to stay for a little while yet!

So how many of you have a preorder for Friday? I debated cancelling mine but stuck with it and am quite excited for Friday now.

Got mine and a long weekend off. The Game website suggests they still have release day stock left, which surprised me.

Still have mine too but pretty annoyed there is no virtual console at launch. Probably to entice people to pay £60 for Zelda, I guess.

Edge have scored Zelda 10/10 and I've found the review.

No preorder and I'm likely to wait until later in the year to either get a switch or a cheap wii U just for zelda. Looking at getting a mtb instead and just booked a family week in Devon too!

I have never got a console on launch day and am very rarely an early adopter but the switch really caught my attention early on. All the initial impression reviews appear to be really positive too. Roll on Friday.

Have you got a link to the review?

Have to say that I've never been as UN=interested in a console launch as for the Switch.

It just seems to be a complete train-wreck ... underpowered for a home console, compromised with battery life for a portable, limited selection of games, rubbish online subscription perks(compared to Xbox and Playstation) and not even something that would obviously add a ton of value like backward compatibility to their existing library of classics (ie. Virtual console) at launch.

Still, I thought almost as badly about the original Wii and it went on to generate loads of hardware sales, if not be quite as successful with third party software.

Nintendo are obviously hoping to piggy-back from the success of the various iterations of the 3DS and avoid going head on with Sony and MS in the home console wars but this machine looks to be a massive compromise to me.

I'm in for the pre-order. It's my little boys 8th birthday on the 20th so I have bought this for him so we can play together.

After reading this review, I can't wait for us to get stuck in!

I'm a huge fan of open-world RPG's and Zelda and this looks to be at the absolute pinnacle. 10/10? Never heard of that before!

Anyone know if these are sold out?

I've gone from "No way" to "meh" to "Hmm, maybe" to "Damn I want one of those"!

Retailers will have stock on the shelves on Friday, ASDA, Sainburys, Tesco etc.. Just like when Sony or Xbox launch a console.

But they won't have much.

Well after being messed about by GAME on my pre-order, spending over an hour in a queue on the phone and being turned away from a store willing to pay there and then for one, I went to Tesco Direct instead. £20 cheaper than game and being delivered this Friday.

Will never use GAME again, shocking service!!!

Wikipedia gives a list of games that Edge scored 10/10. I would agree with the score for Halo if the game ended before the flood turned up and ruined it.

Game cancelled my online order of Zelda limited edition for whatever reason (most likely they've oversold it), just hoping when I turn up for midnight launch they haven't cancelled my console order, will kick off in the shop if they have.

Me too. I've just pre-ordered one from Nintendo themselves, plus Zelda and a carry case. I wasn't going to bother, but I'm a sucker for Zelda games and the fact it's getting rave reviews swung it for me. Fingers crossed it gets the support it needs to be a winner.

Missed out on one of the £198.50 deals on GameSeek last night, so stuck in a last minute order with ShopTo. Was flip flopping between getting Zelda on the Wii U and waiting for more titles on the Switch, but I'm a sucker for a new toy and I've been using my Vita loads recently for remote play on my PS4, as I can just about be social enough to communicate with the wife from the sofa whilst doing that, as she's watching whatever guff is on TV. Roll on tomorrow!

Still can't believe how stupidly excited I am about the Switch arriving.

My only concern now is my Amazon order status still says 'Arriving tomorrow, shipping today' ...but no shipment confirms yet frown

My order was placed 13th January at about 7am (seconds after it appeared on Amazon as a pre-order) so I hope they dispatch soon!!!!

I've had my email from Tesco Direct saying that mine has been dispatched.

Will never use Game again, much smoother transaction with a Supermarket and I only pre-ordered it yesterday!
