Horizon Zero Dawn

Is a great game, challenge curve works really well.
Go from using the grass as cover to get past any of the watchers in the early levels to squaring up to a Thunderjaw, feeling badass having torn off it's head cannons to kill it, while at the same time brushing off a couple of watchers.
Rumour has it the game creators are working on a new open world game at the moment.

It's quality. There wasn't a bit of it where I felt like I was just going through the motions. I can't say the same of RDR2.
Completely agree. The storyline is good, the graphics excellent but the pacing of the gameplay is what makes it. You start being terrified of even mid scale animals and then gradually build up your confidence as skill levels improve. Then you gradually learn their weaknesses and best weapon combinations and styles to take them down, and eventually taking them down for fun.PhilboSE said:

For a Thunderjaw (and going on memory now havent got the game anymore) best thing to do is lay down a load of trip wire traps/bombs I think you need about 10-12 and then take a pot shot at it and run away. It will lumber through them and get lit up by all sorts of massive explosions and go down pretty much immediately. coldel said:

Earlier on I used to take them out with their own launchers as described above, but on ultra-hard that became quite risky and you could easily need to hit them with all discs from both launchers to bring them down.
That's what I love above this game though, there are so many nuances and different tactics to evolve. Using the rope launcher and freeze arrows before switching to damage weapons makes a huge difference. Then there are certain animals where it's important to hit their exposed canisters with the right arrow to make life much easier.
So many ways to crack the same nut, sign of a class game.
Got this from a game swap with nephew at the weekend, he gave me this, I gave him Days Gone (which I absolutely loved). I'm really enjoying it so far, only got maybe 10 hours in, done a ton of side quests and am currently heading toward Meridian (I think), however, on the way I have to find Sona, the War Chief (so yes, very early stages).
Really enjoying it, it looks fantastic and the story is really interesting so far, seems like a very clever idea.

Now almost 70 hours in and closing in the final parts of the main story, having completed all the side quests I've discovered, still no Gucci armour for me, I've done 4 Cauldrons (I think) and no more appera to be on the map, so I'm missing one somewhere, there's a bunker in the area where you start the game, so maybe it's in there.
Really enjoyed this game though, a fantastic story and I reckon it would make an awesome TV show or movie, such a clever story to it.
Anyway, when I finish the main quest can you continue to explore etc like other open world games, or is that it?
For anyone who enjoyed this, give Days Gone a try, very similar feel etc.

You can carry on. Or, play the game through on a different difficulty BUT you get to keep all the weapons from your first round. If you do this you can get some really good upgrades for the weapons. After I finished I spent some time roaming around improving my techniques on various machines. And there's the (single) DLC which gives quite a few extra hours of gameplay, and is well worth the money.

Thanks for the tip, I will give that a go as I'm current in between games having finally had my fill of Dead by Daylight.Just got to Meridian and this game has sunk its teeth in now. What a fantastic world they've created, and Aloy is a great protagonist.
I don't think I've ever played a big open world game that is so good as a pick up and play experience for half an hour. Just load it up, kill a few machines. Testament to the combat that it encourages play like that - not many open world games have combat this gratifying. The design of the machines is fantastic as well - the first time I saw a thunderjaw up close (and got promptly slaughtered) was awe inspiring.
I also think they've nailed the size of the world. It's expansive enough but not ridiculously big. And it's packed full of things to see and do.
I'm still a bit stumped by all the weapons. I mainly use the tripcaster before a fight and the bow during but I know there is more I could be doing.
A sequel as a ps5 launch title would be a HUGE boon for Sony. It would tip the balance for me in terms of which console to buy.
