But MS and Sony don't make games and don't get royalties from games? Thought Publishers pay MS/Sony a fee to be able to use their console/OS and use the DevKit however all income went to the Publishers who filter a little bit down to the developers?
Microsoft publish some of the biggest games out there on the Xbox including Forza, Dead Rising, Halo, Minecraft, Gears of War etc.

I maybe wrong but I'm pretty sure consoles don't make money, not for the first few years anyway.

All console first parties (Sony, MS, Nintendo and Sega when they were in the hw business...) charge a royalty for publishing on their platform, its no different to Apple or Steam and their 30% cut of sales (although I have no idea on what the current first party console rates are)

The original Playstation marked a significant change in hardware development where massive investment was required in custom chips, rendering tech, storage and AV fidelity, the R&D for each generation after that has got more and more expensive meaning that the hardware is generally sold at a loss in the first few years, but then as the installed user base grows the manufacturing costs also tend to come down as more cost efficient production methods are found (IIRC there are 3 or 4 hardware revisions on the PS3 for example)

FWIW, I remember a colleague went to a Sony developer conference back in 1995, just prior to the European launch of the original PS1. Even back then they had a roadmap that predicted several generations of hardware over 20+ years and the level of performance to be delivered by each, we've actually come to a point where the graphical fidelity they were predicting back then is almost with us now...

Loving my one x, my orginal launch Xbox one decided to self destruct conveniently which forced me into getting one.

The graphics are astounding, titanfall looks amazing and although it's not been given a 4K update,battlefield1 looks even better.
The whole smoothness of the console is much better aswell.

My Xbox One was a launch edition console (albeit I bought it a month or so after release, I'm guessing it's exactly the same as the first consoles to arrive here). It has been absolutely great in that time. Such a leap forward from the Xbox 360 (my brother and I had four new consoles between us from Microsoft after RROD issues). The only problem with my Xbox One is that you need to lift the front of the console to guarantee it'll load a disc, as the pickup mechanism is worn. Other than that, it has performed flawlessly for litterally thousands and thousands of hours.

The Scorpio is more of the same but better and we're not even seeing it's potential being tapped. I've heard that the new Assassins Creed looks and performs amazingly well on it so I will be picking that up. It'll be the first AC game I've played since AC II. Shadow of War looks amazing on it and a new Warframe update comes out tomorrow.

Pretty sure Sony and MS were making profit on the hardware of the PS4 and Xbox One from the start, not so sure that's the case for MS now with the Xbox One X.

"Microsoft will see a loss for every Xbox One X unit it sells.

This was confirmed to Business Insider during an interview with Phil Spencer, who simply said "No" when asked if the platform holder would make any money from sales of its upcoming console.

Oddly, when asked if that means Xbox is taking a loss, he answered: "I didn't answer it that way."

He later elaborated: "I don't want to get into all the numbers, but in aggregate you should think about the hardware part of the console business is not the money-making part of the business. The money-making part is in selling games."

This is not necessarily a ground-breaking, shareholder-angering revelation. Both Microsoft and Sony have historically sold their consoles at a loss with the intention of offsetting this with sales of games and services such as Xbox Live.

As well as CoD, Battlefront 2, Destiny 2... you have too much time on your hands laugh

I've put CoD on my office Xbox, might have a chance to progress a bit further. smile

Questions. I have a good 4K TV prior getting the X and and had a S beforehand.

Does the X upscale anyone on GTA 5 As i've been playing it and it looks more amazing than I remember. . I know downloads times have dropped. I never played GTA 5 on my 4K tv and was on my HD tv. I went back to GTA5 just to replay the single player as it's so much fun.

I have not noticed much difference playing AC origins between the S and X on my 4K tv. Anyone noticed the same?

Same with Destiny 2. Have they uploaded a 4k patch for this at all?

I know the developers have not had time to push the X and this will come in time.

normal content should be super sampled up to a sudo 4k, like what the PS pro does. Destiny 4K patch is coming with the Osiris patch.

I hope PUBG will be good and not just a buggy, glitchy mess but I am not holding out much hope. I still think it will be good, but sometimes I wonder if the developer will ever actually finish it and release the finished product.

Anyway, I'm absolutely loving my Xbox One X, it's superb. Gears of War 4 looks amazing in 4K, but the option to drop to less than 4K but increase frames to 60fps is genius. Imo, 4K is nice but give frames first and foremost, the smoothness is nicer to look art than ultra-high quality textures. I think Gears 4 in 60fps mode might be the best looking game I've ever played.

Go to options and it’s labeled graphics visuals is the native 4K, performance is some 4K with enhanced graphics and 60fps

This is Gears of War 4 specific, but it's in the options menu. You can't select it in game, only from the main menu.

More developers should do this, especially for fast action games because 60fps is much better for precise shooting, leading targets etc.

The developers of World of Tanks have already confirmed they can do 4K at 60fps but the cheeky s won't enable it at the moment because they're afraid it will give Xbox One X players an advantage and they don't want to upset cheapskates still using the Xbox One and Xbox 360!
