Hi Guys,

Has anybody gone down the VR route yet?

I'm looking for some suggestions on recommended setups.

I'm interested in getting one those race seat setups (something like Playseat), but rather than use a monitor was thinking of just plugging a VR headset in instead.

That would give me more flexibility where I put the seat, since my PC location (study) isn't that big.

I've got a gt omega pro rig and seat, and I run triple screens but recently got an oculus rift, there's no going back it's truly brilliant...be careful with the playseat as some have centre posts which can be a bit annoying. You will still need a monitor as some games only play the game in the headset. Also they are too uncomfortable to wear for hours on end. You'll need a break.

I've got a triple screen setup too, it's just that for the location of a racing seat setup the monitors are in an awkward position on my current desk. Hence looking at the VR route, as I can just have the seat positioned anywhere near the PC without having to worry about veiwing the monitor. Especially if I go for one of the lower sitting seat setups.

So you would recommend the Oculus then? How do you find the resolution compared to the monitors? Does it plug into the PC for power, or run off battery charge? Is it a simple case of just buying the headset and plugging it in? Or is there a bit more involved in getting it setup to work with games?

I have a Vive but I've also had an OR DK1 and 2 (and a PSVR actually).

The PS headsets are all higher resolution than HD at 2160×1200 but the issue is that because you are close to the screen you can see the pixels. This is generally called the screen door effect (sde). Processing requirements are much higher as well. It's more complex than just rendering the same scene twice so you need a high spec PC with a high spec GPU. Project cars is demanding as it is so VR on top is even more so. I'd not really consider running VR on less than a 970/1070.

You need a consistently high frame rate so although it might work any slowdown is very noticeable and can contribute to making you feel sick.

That said, once you've tried it you won't want to go back, it's utterly brilliant. You don't really notice the sde once you are racing, turning your head to the apex, looking at other cars in the mirrors or by your side. I can run much more consistent laps and closer to the car in front in VR.

A game must support VR in the flavour of HMD you have. There are workarounds for a game that is for OR to get it working on Vive but it's a faff. Other than that once you have set up the headset it's plug and play.

Any specific questions, I'm sure someone will be able to answer.

I've played PCars on the Vive quite a bit and, as Bullet says, once you've tried it, you won't want to go back to a flat screen of any kind! The immersion is fantastic. It runs natively through steam and is a plug and play implementation. I run mine on a 1070 and the performance is absolutely flawless.

The resolution issues cannot be ignored, it is a big drop from a flat screen. However, as soon as you're driving and feel like you're 'in the car', it really is very quickly forgotten.

If you can, it would be worth seeing if you can have a go on someone else's rig before you decide.

I would say you need to set up VR far more carefully than monitor. My first VR experience was at Overclockers running Project Cars and it genuinely put me off buying a Vive at the time.
I took the plunge because an Oculus Rift came up on gumtree close to work cheap. I'd read so many accounts saying how good it was and thought if I don't like it I can easy get my money back. I'm s glad I did, the smallest movement of the headset on your head makes a huge difference to the viewing experience because your eyes are so close to the screen. If you get it right then honestly the drop in visual fidelity is not extreme, it's not HD but it's better than SD imo...

As others have said the immersion is something else, there is no going back. My rift sensor has gone back for replacement as it's faulty, and I'm gutted. Can't wat for it to come back.

The only downside is my face gets hot so I usually do max 20 minute sessions before resting.

Actually looking forward to getting rid of the triples so I can get some office/mancave space back.

Yes the T300 is a better wheel, but it's also double the price without the shifter (and there's no point because you only get 2 pedals and most people feel the need to upgrade them). In my opinion it's not double the wheel. You own a G27 so you know how good it is, the G29 is very similar, just modified to work on PS4.

The answer is obviously how much do you want to spend...if you're going to splurge I'd go with a PC upgrade and stick with that. Far more options to upgrade the experience than console. You're only missing out on Gran Turismo after all.

I have triple screens, transponders with vibration for car feel, oculus rift (when it's working). I'm actually thinking of selling the PS4 and G29, mainly because GT Sport Beta has been pretty disappointing so far and I've hardly used it. Everything else I can play on PC and get a much better experience.
Had quick go on T300 & Pro pedals last night. It IS very good chuffed with it really.

Finally had a decent session on it & have to say IMHO it's a fair bit better than the G27. The pedals (got the upgraded ones) are miles better too.
Lap times were down smile

Now.. does anyone know if there's a way to repair a Project Cars install on a PC? I cant go through the full install pain again - took ages with 2 x DVDs & a follow up monster download).

I ask as it quits to desktop mid way through when loading Le Mans circuit.

The only way I know of is by using Steam...you can register your serial number on there (I think) and it will keep the game updated, plus you can do a local files check if you have any problems...

Also annoying. I've bought it for PS4 & just now have a wheel that works with it (selling on older G27).
So... as of 2am ... when I was just about to overtake into 3rd place around Snetterton & the screen went vivd pink (!) .. I'm going to do a U turn & get a 2nd hand PS4 (not rob the kids of theirs)
