I'll try it later today and see how it goes.
Having a few sets of clothes on your horse. Changing clothes makes it harder for the townspeople to recognise you after you have committed crimes there if you want to go back into the town after losing your persuers, than only lawmen will recognise you if you are wanted.

Unfortunately it's not completely true. The smaller the animal the better the chance of a 2 star animal giving a 3 star pelt. All songbirds are good for this, most (all?) things that go in the satchel get upgraded, but things that get stowed on the nag don't.

Always aim for the head with the right weapon (i.e. don't use an overpowered rifle). Also, use eagle eye to look at the animal tracks as this also tells you the quality of the animal. No need to use binoculars - you can stick them UP on your tripod!
The trinket says it "gives a chance" for a higher quality IIRC.

Well after one robbery my bounty went from $5 to $750. Had a bit of a shoot out in Valentine but luckily I have dual sawn offs. Lots of bodies with missing heads smile .

Not going to bother doing any more challenges as I am half way through chapter 6 and decided I will do them all on my next play through. Arthur and I are going on the rampage instead.

I have to admit I don't find it very hard to get perfect pelt, well apart from squirrels as they're a sod to hit with a bow.

There's no real art to it, you study the species once, then aim at it and see if it's a 1,2 or 3 star animal and kill it with whatever weapon you need. It's a Bow for Squirrels and Rats, Varmit Rifle for Rabbits and pretty much anything else you can use a Bolt-Action or Sniper rifle, but if you press 'info' when you're pointing at them it'll tell you what you need, the odd thing wants a repeater rather then a rifle for some reason.

3 star animals will always give (as far as I can tell) a perfect pelt for a clean kill with the correct weapon. I wasn't aware you could get a perfect pelt with a 2 star animal, but 3 stars aren't exactly rare, especially with herd animals, one is invariably 3 star.

I only wish you could carry more than 1 large 'gator per horse. They must be the easiest thing to hunt in the entire game. They don't move and there's dozens of them per pond.

Thanks for the info above and the mention of a Trinket. I was really struggling with the Hunting for pelts side of things, even though its part of the game I really wanted to advance on, with the satchels etc.

Is there anything else worth noting around hunting etc? I am mid chapter 3 I think, and have already learnt thanks to this thread that money isnt the be all and end all on the game and very easy to come by. Hunting I defo want to explore and advance trinkets and Satchels as much as possible.

I must have got lucky with the pelts.

I am only just into chapter 4 but went off on a tangent doing side missions etc. And decided I wanted the fully upgraded bag.

Took a couple of days but got it with minimal hassle except getting killed multiple times trying to kill a panther. Even with dead eye it was bloody quick.

Now stuck away from home with no xbox frown

Satchel is definitely worth doing, next trinkets and talismans from the fence as you already know but the legendaries always produce a perfect pelt so feel free to use whatever weapon and ammo you want on these, no need for a perfect kill.
Certain Animal parts can also be used to craft ammo at a camp fire if you have the recipe, (explosive ammo especially.)
Beyond that there’s the master hunter challenges, legendary fish if you count them as hunting, camp “upgrades” if you can be bothered.
The only other thing I can think of is the stuff from the trapper, clothing, saddles etc which require the right animal bits selling to him before you buy the stuff back off him if you aren’t already doing that.

ETA there’s also the compendium to complete for all the animals, (study, track, kill, skin) if you are a completionist

I've just finished the main story and my only criticism of this game is it's ridiculously easy - I didn't even bother upgrading.

That's R* games for you, they produce a lot of game for you to enjoy, but it plays almost like a film. It's rare to fail at a mission I guess you'd call it an experience.

Yeah, you can't get stuck like you could with games of old.

If you fail enough times it moves you on anyway.

I got this for Christmas from Mrs. P and am absolutely loving it. I've not been so immersed and hooked on a game in a long, long time. It's just so vast and detailed... it's incredible.

The first night I've really not flat out loved playing it was last night though as I seemed to take a long time to achieve not very much. I've just started chapter 3 and really want to try and upgrade my kit. Are the satchel upgrades worth it? I've got to the point where I'm not too bad at hunting but I've still not seen some of the animals (such as a panther) I need for the satchels, I guess I just need to take a note of what I need and go wandering. I hadn't seen any gators either until last night when I started chapter 3, do some of them only appear after a set point? Or was I just not looking hard enough?

Do poison arrows help with pelts? I bought the document on these from the fence last night but can't find one of the items at the moment. I see the comments about money too, I don't have a lot by any means but I'm putting into the camp pot a lot of the time too.

I must have played this for 30hrs now and it's 2hrs every time I play it. What a game! I've taken ages to get to chapter 3, but that's because I've been doing loads of other stuff and generally just having fun. smile

Fully upgraded satchel ups most items to 99 of each.
Small game arrows are wanted if you need perfect small animal pelts, poison arrow is the recommended for the panther, panther only spawns in one location as far as I know.
Moose are rare but findable, I have a couple of spots for them, Iguana are only in one place early in the game.
The animal drawings on the map aren’t aren’t specific locations, just a guide to the general area,
Will put up for animal specific locations for you if needed
Certain animals for trapper upgrades are only in later areas of the game

That’s ideal, thanks. I don’t need specific locations, but it definitely sounds worth upgrading the satchels then!

Cheers!

I finished this two weeks ago and spent two months getting to the end prior to that. I don't think I've immersed myself in a game as much as I have this one. I keep thinking back to it and, although it has flaws, it really is a spectacular game. It really is a game that rewards you for taking your time with it and getting sucked into the world and that final epilogue mission was superb, the music especially really gets you pumped for the climax you've been waiting for the entire game. I really hope they're working on bringing RDR into this world via some sort of expansion.

There's a very touching scene and music when you get to 100% completion as well.

I agree about the cut scenes, it really is a massively immersive game.

I ended up shouting a fair few profanities last night. I looked up what I needed for some of satchels and had my wee list so I headed from the camp (chapter 3 camp) away up to the North East looking for Beavers ( biggrin ) and Badgers and Elk. I tracked down the beavers and managed to bag the legendary beaver while I was there, found a stash of stuff on the way too which got me a Badger but not a perfect one and opted to go and try and get the Legendary Bear too since I was so far away from camp. On my way to the bear I snagged a perfect Elk with a ridiculous rifle headshot from horseback while I was turning back on myself to try and chase it. I had amassed a fair few deer pelts too and rabbits and whatever else. This is taking a while, but it's going great!

I saved the game and camped near the bear then I tracked the bear down and died. Reload, die again. Reload... he's gone now. Balls. I'll go and see if I can head back and cash in all this stuff I've got then come back another time. I've now died about 4 or 5 times in total trying for the bear so I cut my losses and head for camp.

Riding back up the road I hear a woman crying for help. So I dismount and go over to help her and get jumped by 3 guys on horseback plus the woman. Oh no! I panicked big time as my horse legged it and I only had my pistols and varmint rifle... I took care of the woman and two guys but couldn't see the third and he really did a lot of damage before I figured out where he was (I was useless in this fight, which really should've been easier). I have no idea why I panicked so much but he ended up killing me...

No big deal I thought, the game reloaded and I found my horse... with no pelts. No perfect Elk, none of the deer and I still hadn't got the bear, all this took me about 90 mins or more. Cue massive swearing outburst.

I managed to sort all this reasonably quickly by trying again though. I snagged the bear, a faster horse and a perfect Elk but still need more pelts to do any of the satchels and the whole lot took me 2hrs45. Ended up loads of fun, but what a bugger that was losing all my stuff. Tonight I'll head back and try and get the missing pelts and see if I can find a panther plus maybe investigate the Arabian horse.

What a game!
