Just done this as well.
Really struggled with the beaver, but i’ve always struggled getting the perfect beaver.
Got lucky with the cougar, always found it easy getting lucky with cougars.
A lot of the guides suggest that the beaver can be shot with something bigger than the varmint. Took me a while to realise that wasn't the case and had to be arrows/varmint. That lake was practically full of dead beavers by the time I got a perfect one!Really struggled with the beaver, but i’ve always struggled getting the perfect beaver.

Just started this last night. Seems pretty good so far but i'm mainly trying to hit the story line a lot to progress out of the snow. I think i've got a fair while to go before that. I had the first one and things are starting to come back in terms of controls but still a bit learning curve.
Do we know if Arthur's actions have any effect on his attitude later in the game? As in if you are a horrible git or a good git in your ratings.
Spoiler is for more chapter 5 above.
Arthur is starting to do my head with his constant moaning about Dutch's actions. If it does effect his attitude I am going I am going on a killing spree to make him nasty again.

Anyone else finding the hunting a massive grind and PITA?
It's kiling the game for me a bit...had to take a break from RDR2 for a few days, downloaded Nier Automata and spent all weekend on that (epic game if you like JRPGs).
I haven’t had much of a reason so far (chapter 4) to bother with it, except for a couple of times I’m forced to during missions. It's kiling the game for me a bit...had to take a break from RDR2 for a few days, downloaded Nier Automata and spent all weekend on that (epic game if you like JRPGs).

I'm really struggling with upgrading my satchels. I can't find a lot of the animals anywhere.
what are you struggling with? Some things are rare, some things only spawn in certain places, some things don't spawn in pristine condition and some things are just tough to hunt.

Could someone put some red dots on a map where they found animals maybe and then people can search those areas to find them?
or just get on google and let someone else tell you.......https://www.vg247.com/2018/11/09/red-dead-redempti...

I feel you, I'm struggling also...
what with?Getting perfect pelts or finding something?
To get a perfect pelt you need a pristine (3*) animal and then use the correct weapon to get a clean kill (usually headshot).
Some have to be hunted with the small game arrows but I think that's only the squirrel for the satchels. The rest are varmint and up.

This is what I spent most of my playtime doing this weekend. Actually quite enjoyed it, but it was a grind. Badgers were the hardest part for me. I found trotting around on the horse in some really small wooded areas (brown forest floor) just North of Rhodes was getting me constant "critter" spawns. I just rode around avoiding trees constantly auto-aiming to pick out targets that I couldn't see, waiting for the odd badger, hoping that a three star would appear.I eventually gave up, and just cracked on with some other objectives but made sure whenever I was travelling on horse back that I controlled it manually rather than auto-pilot, and had the varmint rifle in hand, flashing it at anything that moved. As soon as I stopped actively looking for them, they appeared.
I wouldn't pay TOO much attention to the animal locations as they appear in the world map. Think these are very much just guidelines.
Was quite pleased that the bison appeared near enough where they were indicated. Other than in the mission in Chapter 2, I hadn't ever seen them in all the bolting back and forward to Emerald Ranch I had done. The herd is actually quite hard to miss if you're looking for them.

I did it at the start of chapter 3 and there must be a badger spawn point right near the camp as I found one just north east of it on my way back from retrieving another skin for the satchels.I eventually gave up, and just cracked on with some other objectives but made sure whenever I was travelling on horse back that I controlled it manually rather than auto-pilot, and had the varmint rifle in hand, flashing it at anything that moved. I had to get the bison to respawn as none of them were 3*, then the second herd decided to run in front of a train but (luckily) one of the few that survived was pristine.
Not once did I go through the hunting 'steps', I'd just do what you did and ride around the spawn area aiming at stuff to find a 3*. I tried to use bait on the panther but it didn't seem to work so just kept leaving and coming back to make it spawn again.
I'm trying to avoid just googling straight answers to try to encourage me to search the game world with my eyes and ears, but can anyone give me a little hint: as far as the trapper/Pearson is concerned, is there a difference between a cougar and a panther skin? (not talking about the legendary ones).
Or do the two appear scribbled differently on the world map in a way that could be easily described?
There's a couple of cats on my map but both are in areas where I think I've previously encountered cougars, so I'm assuming maybe I haven't hit a spawn area yet for panthers (I'm in the middle of Chapter 3 in Rhodes). I could go by the Legendary animal map - that's how I found where beavers were - but in other instances, like the wolf, it didn't appear in an area known for other wolf sightings.

sorry, I did get it...... it was just early..... and I genuinely did struggle with the beavers!
.... I'm a hit with the cougars though.
It was genuine, I struggled with the beavers but not the cougar-but it suited Carry On mode as well..... I'm a hit with the cougars though.
Unlike some on here I enjoy the hunting, but it does require patience and perseverance. Happy to provide tips.
