To practice building land as far away from the bus route and collect lots of wood and just get use to the building keys.
There is a new Builder Pro layout for the Xbox that assigns eachpiece to a different button.
It helped me and I'm in my ahem... 40s
You really do just have to keep playing and you will improve eventually. Playing in a squad with friends helps to, they will help you and protect you as you get your bearings.
Winning a game though is bloody hard, dont expect to just be winning games cos you play alot.

I watch games through to the end sometimes and I know what I see people doing to win is probably going to be beyond me. Don't know whether to just give up and play something else or persevere and hope for big strokes of luck.

"Real World" practice and learning is very slow as you're matched against people who are highly skilled already.
I concur. I can’t see me winning. I finished 5th in a solo because I literally hid as a bush for the whole game. No kills, just bush.

I got my first solo win by hiding in a bush! Let the top 5 finish each other off as I just kept creeping into the ever decreasing circle.

Just as it got really small the last guy jumped off a ledge and landed about 10 feet in front of me - two quick shotgun blasts and he was dead, never even saw it coming.

A lot of the final places is down to luck - whether the circle lands in a good place for you, you're hiding is more effective than others, which weapons you've managed to pick up along the way (basically if you don't have a SCAR and an RPG going into the last 5, you're going to struggle).

Keep plugging away, be sneaky, hide in bushes a lot and I bet you get a win soon.

Also I’m trying to unlearn 15 years of COD. Didn’t like Gears of War or Ghost reacon because of the 3rd person view. Having fun playing though which is main thing.

A solid finish to a squad game, watch from 2:00. No audio though, not sure what happened there. 2:00 linked in top comment.

Best gun for my “spray and pray” shooting style is the sub-machine gun (ideally green or better) - very good up close if, like me, you can’t time your shotgun shots!

Have won a couple of times by hiding and luck, and one team game as last man standing without firing a shot - last other player fell off their fort trying to find me! biggrin

I think I'm going to hang up my boots and not bother with the battle pass this season.

My slow (15 fps!) laptop makes the whole experience more frustrating than enjoyable and the ability of the average player is going up and up. I still enjoy watching the good players on Youtube (Ninja, Myth, Ali-A, etc) but it's worth noting they all have high end PCs or the PRO version of the consoles. I noticed on Ninja's stream that he is getting 300+ fps at maximum resolution and draw distance.

Great game, but you need decent processing power to compete IMO.

Things I don't get in the game...

I keep on getting snipered, one shot kills... but I can't sniper other people at all.
in fact in a one on one situation the opponent almost always beats me.

I assume headshots, but what I don't get is, accuracy is supposed to be lower when moving, but other people can get headshots whilst jumping and at a range.

Why can't I!

Absolutely not true, I play on an i5 2500k (2011 CPU) and AMD R7 260x gfx card (2013) and it is as smooth as anything. This pc is over five years old. Most of the Pros PCs are high end because they earn a living from gaming and they need to stream a nd record while they play.
If you have a console it is free on there too and everybody runs at the same speed (crap internet aside).

Hide and pick off randoms and hope I pick the right place to land is my strategy. Best result ever today which was 4th with 2 kills.

Just managed a 2nd with 0 kills smile

got the last guy to 50% health, but playing stealth for the game means rubbish weapons for the last fight!

have managed 7 kills in a solo battle though. prob my best so far

Another tip that seems to work well for me is to stay near, or even behind, the storm line as it moves in. Certainly for the first move of the circle you only lose 1 HP per second, so spending 30 seconds in the storm certainly isn't the end of the world.

This means that you're behind other players who are moving away from the moving storm line. This can be a real advantage if they run into someone and start a firefight in front of you as you can just pick them off while they're distracted. Even if they're looting or harvesting materials, you can often catch people unawares.

And if you manage to find someone behind you running in the storm, you've got a really strong advantage as they need to move towards you or they'll die from the storm and they're weakening by the second, so you can just sit in a good position and wait for them.

Obviously crucial that you find bandages or a med kit early on though.

Won a duos match the other day where neither of us got a kill.

I get way too stressed once you get down to the final 5 in solo, my hands start shaking uncontrollably and I can't hit anyone. Occasionally it does come off though. A solo win feels 100 times better than a duo or squad win in my book.

TBF I'd have thought this is your kind of game based on how you used to get on with CoD MW etc. I was hoping you'd give me some pointers!

Haha, cheers mate... It's not quite like that anymore, COD has rather overtaken me as well! I only have 6 solo wins from about 150 games on Fortnite.

I agree with the playing smart route, I drop into quiet places and try and loot as much as possible. I'm crap with shotguns so I tend to take an SMG. The difficulty is normally getting to a point where you can stamp your authority on the final battles. You need a Scar, RPG and as close to 200 health as possible, with lots of ammo and enough brick or steel to not be compromised. Then build a base with good foundations that is 2 or 3 walls high at a high point of the circle. Then hope you don't get wrecked hehe

Unfortunately organising all of those puzzle pieces into one game never happens for me and I die a sad, shameful death every time. Ho hum.

There's a big quotient of luck involved as to where those final circles form up. That's my excuse anyway.

The fact I can't build a decent fort is also an issue, I'll admit!
