Really helps to have a sniper rifle in this game now, with long sight lines over hills etc, got 4 Victory Royales yesterday, that's four more than the last month or so, lol.
Yeah, the new zip lines can be quite useful, fishing can be good fun too, leaves you vulnerable to attack if someone is quiet though. Like I said, sniper rifles can be lethal on the new map way more than before, with such open expanses and lots of hills.
Yeah plenty of the bolt action rifles, but a lot of Uncommon rarity. I heard you can find machines to trade materials to upgrade. Not found one yet. I like the Epic heavy sniper you could take people out from 250m+ away. I haven't even ventured into the really hilly bit but I bet that would be good for sniping. I can't get the hang of fishing. Can't catch a fish, cant hook a weapon. I was trying to hook a weapon from the roof of one building, was there ages, eventually someone took a pot shot at me, luckily they missed.

You only get loot from active fishing pools. These are easy to spot on water as they look like a target with a bullseye. You simply cast to the middle of the target and wait for the bobber to drop and then quickly reel in your loot.moonigan said:

Upgrade stations look like round tables with a higher level ring of tools above the main table deck.I can't get the hang of fishing. Can't catch a fish, cant hook a weapon. Fishing - cast the line, wait for the float to bob in the water (3-4 seconds usually) then quickly pull the right trigger to reel in your catch. Hadn’t realised you could hook a weapon from where it’s sitting, might give that a go later...

Found a station but didn't have enough materials to upgrade. Got the fishing working as well thanks. Not sure if you can hook a weapon from land. There was a challenge to hook a weapon but I hoiked a pistol out the water and that was enough.Fishing - cast the line, wait for the float to bob in the water (3-4 seconds usually) then quickly pull the right trigger to reel in your catch. Came very close to a Victory Royale on solo. Was down to the last two, saw the other player, wingend them with a sniper but not a kill, had to re-position due the storm and they got me with a sniper headshot. bd
Some good places in the hills/mountains to hide out

I’ve been playing for about 3-4 seasons and got my first victory royale today, I got far more excited than I probably should have but it felt like quite an achievement for me.
I've come really close 3 times now. I was never in to computer games, but you have to hand it to Epic, it's one addictive game.
I have been ill for the last few days so played a lot of this. I definitely think the matchmaking and bots have done the trick. Before playing solo I would drop last, find somewhere quiet and survive as long as I can, lucky if I get one kill. Now I drop first go straight for the kill, occasionally get caught out by a better player, occasionally win against them. I am getting 4-10 kills per game almost everytime and into the top 10 regularly. Now I have leveled up I am seeing fewer bots which makes it interesting.
I need to work on my close quarters battles as those I lose the most. Mid range AR battles and long range sniper I am getting really good at. I got a Ludicrious shot sniper badge and then an Impossible shot badge with a 278m moving target headshot with the green sniper rifle. One game I landed on the roof picked up a sniper and took out 3 people before they had even landed.
I am yet to get a bloody victory royale though. Got a fair few 2nd places and plenty of top 5s. I keep making stupid mistakes. Trying to pick off someone with a sniper at the end circle without building any cover etc. Need to learn to take my time and not engage the minute I see someone.
My building has improved massively as well. I also tweaked my display settings and now get a stable 60FPS which has made a big difference.
What are other people carrying in their loadout? I am running with a Shotgun, AR, Sniper, Medikit, Shield. I seem to lose out up close with people using a sub machine gun. Wonder if I should swap out the health or shield for one of those, or maybe even the shotgun. Anything less than Epic on the shotguns needs about 3 head shots if they full health and shield.
Couple of things I have found. The water near sloppy swamp will regen health and shield. Apparently there was a bug and people were hiding in there in the storm and not diying. The barrels you can burst and they give 10 shield/health each. You can fall from height in to water and not take fall damage. There are chests on top of the cranes in the docks. Land there and open and jump into the water.

Load out depends how accurate you are and your play style, I think. I tend to have sniper, SMG and assault rifle, arranged in that order, plus health and shield items in the last two slots if playing solo. I’m a long way from being good, but generally manage a victory royale per season then go back to team rumble (where I don’t bother carrying health).
Sniper for distance, easy swap to SMG for short range spray and pray if someone sneaks up on you while sniping, easy swap to AR if you run out of SMG ammo and don’t have time to reload during the spray and pray, or need something mid-range after the SMG battle because someone else has heard and is heading over to try and kill whoever won...
This is playing with a controller on PS4 though. If I had mouse and keyboard so I could be more accurate, I might pick a different combo.

Baby sat my nephew last weekend and watched him play this. Queue a week later and I'm level 11 and quite enjoying it. Rubbish and building - think I need some offline practise - but loving the squad BR and the 50 on 50 mode. Hilarious. Not really approaching anything tactically; if I can get an AR and a submachine gun, I'm OK at mid-range. One a squad BR so was quite chuffed at that. Now keep looking at the season pass and skins!
if I get the pass and bump up 25 levels, does that mean I'll start playing with people are are level 36 and thus much better than me, or is it cleverer to go on your play record to match up better?

The only time I ever build is when I'm playing the team rumble (20 vs 20) mode, to get some height to parachute off... Then again, I'm too set in my ways to do this new-fangled building lark. Having watched other players throw up towers at a spectacular rate of knots, I know I'll always be outclassed and may as well just focus on shooting 'em!if I get the pass and bump up 25 levels, does that mean I'll start playing with people are are level 36 and thus much better than me, or is it cleverer to go on your play record to match up better?
In terms of battle passes - I buy the basic one for ~900 v-bucks. You'll get the skins as you progress through the levels, and if you play it enough through the season they've generally give away enough v-bucks with the passes to allow you to get the next one for free, assuming you don't spend on additional cosmetics. Just did a quick Google to see if this was still true with Chapter 2, and I see they're saying it is:
https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/en-US/battle-pa...
"Get 1500 V-Bucks back!
You can pick up the Battle Pass for 950 V-Bucks,and earn up to 1500 V-Bucks by playing. That’s enough to buy the next season’s Battle Pass plus more from the item shop."
Looks like you've got to get to level 65-ish to get 1,000 v-bucks together, so if you can do that (and you're already level 11 so you can probably extrapolate the progress a little) then you're all set for following seaons. Before they changed the levelling system, I would generally get to battle pass level 100 end of week 9/start of week 10, playing for an hour or two a night.

Ah, fantastic. The building thing - it's impressive watching someone create a multiplex cinema with multistory car park around them, within seconds, whilst I'm trying to shoot them. You're right - perhaps it's not worth the effort and just enjoy shooting people In terms of battle passes - I buy the basic one for ~900 v-bucks. Thanks for the explanation. I think a 950vb buy in just to enjoy something that isn't the standard skins doesn't seem too bad. I don't buy many games and an hour or so a night is worth a ~£10 investment every so often. Cheers!

Pretty certain your level and xp are separate from your skill stats which are used for the skill based match making so regardless of what level you are you should theoretically be matched against people of the same level. However I'm not that convinced as I am now constantly in matches against people whose skill level is vastly superior to mine.moonigan said:

Is the first game in (where you jump straight into a game from the intro cut scene) a legit game with real players? as I got 7 kills and the victory royale which is strange considering I hadn't won a game since season 9?!

2 things they’ve changed:Is the first game in (where you jump straight into a game from the intro cut scene) a legit game with real players? as I got 7 kills and the victory royale which is strange considering I hadn't won a game since season 9?!
- added ‘bots’ into matches. Low skilled, bad accuracy, easy to kill.
- added skill based matchmaking. The better you do the more difficult matches will become.
Win a few more games and you’ll start to notice the human players are better. The bots remain cannon fodder.
Not long after getting my first VR, I got 2 more in quick succession. That seems to have bumped me up the playing field a bit now and I am routinely getting my arse handed to me now.
Its interesting that the bots are all but gone, but you still get some poorer players that are pretty easy to take out.
