Just go to the Play store directly on the tablet, find the game and buy it.

The parental controls that the Hudl2 also offer are first rate, whilst you are buying MC in the store make sure you have these set up.

Ok thanks that could be the way forward, although it's not quite as tangible as opening the wrapping paper and having the game in your hands.

Last but not least, any thoughts on the Playstation Vita as an option?

I don't think that there is cross platform playing on the Sony products.

If you have an old laptop then you should be able to play with your son if he is on the Hudl. (You may need Win 10 though.) I'd get him the Android version and a load of Minecraft books/guides etc to go with it.

Beginner Handbook

Construction Handbook

Redstone Handbook

Combat Handbook

My son has all these books and loves them. The game is far more complicated that you think when Redstone is introduced.

The Nintendo Switch version is rated highly, which as has already been mentioned, allows portable and TV play without fuss.

don't know about the PS Vita.

But one option to add in are the official MC construction handbooks, that'll give him a gift to unwrap. they give all sorts of inspirations, instructions and plans for creating some pretty impressive things.

Not the most cost effective if you haven't got the Switch though... hehe

Once my 8yo has killed the battery on his Kindle Fire he surreptitiously nicks my iPhone 5C and then, once that's exhausted, he'll ask me to switch the Xbox 360 on.

I've never seen him play it on the Laptop. That appears to be reserved solely for Roblox.

So a) my son is hopelessly addicted to Minecraft/Roblox and b) it doesn't seem to matter what you play Minecraft on.

I like the sound of using it as a reason to build a Raspberry Pi. It would help when I try to convince myself that it's all setting him up for a career in coding.

It also runs just fine on the Hudl2 which is what you mentioned you already have.
How do you get it on the Hudl2 or any tablet for that matter? Do you pay and download direct from the Minecraft site?
The Play Store:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com....

You can also use a bluetooth controller with it if you don't like the touchscreen controls.

To Note: The Android version of Minecraft is somewhat cut down from the full version. Not that a 6 year old may notice, though.

Be aware that there are reports of grooming gangs operating through Minecraft.
This is true - the games are called HOECS

hidden On-line Entrapment Control System

On-line paedophiles can actually make your keyboard release toxic vapours that make you suggestible.

The odour actually makes your children smell of hammers.
That's just NONCE SENSE

Thanks for all the advice everyone - I think the route I am going down is getting a Fire 7 tablet (£30 on Black Friday deal) for him with Minecraft pre-loaded for Christmas Day. It takes away the issue with sharing the TV, plus he can play other games and watch Blue Planet on iPlayer etc.

I'm sure he will be fine with touch-screen controls but assuming you can connect a game pad to the Fire 7 somehow (bluetooth?).

Amazon game controller should work.

Blue Fire 7 with case ordered - £20 (I forgot I had £10 credit on my Amazon account)
Minecraft App - £5

Leaves me ample budget for a couple of the 'Guide to...' books as well.
