Thanks - the other baffling thing I am finding is 100 different versions of the same game. Collectors, platinum, gold, metal bloody tin version.

The Hitman vanilla version is good? It’s free on Gold but it’s not GOTY if it makes any difference
Functionally no different, but I'm not sure which episodes are included - they released the game a bit at a time, in episodes (I know....?!?!), so you may want to check what you get in that version (I think only the Training prologue + one other, maybe), but that said, it's free & you'll quickly decide if you like the gameplay.

I also bought rayman as I thought it might be good fir local multilayer. It's good but far too difficult for my daughter who is a bit younger than yours.

I fear Life is Stange is something similar as it only seems to be about 3gb in size
Life is strange is episodic, but i think you can get the whole first season as one package as well as the individual episodes, the physical version is the whole lot bundled together.

it's not a huge game GB wise though.

None of which I will likely use

It’s just like Windows I guess!!

Already yearning for old school stick a disc in and play
Hang on. The updates probably cover two things.

1. The latest tweaks for online play. Everyone needs to be on the exact same version. Sounds like you don't care for this and I get that.
2. And more importantly... bug fixes. They send a game to the printers usually ahead of it really being perfect. They then use that lead time to test and bug fix more. So when you get the disc on day 1 they already have made tonnes of fixes for ridiculous bugs compared to the version you have in your hand. You want to play that newer version to save you falling foul of these bugs which can be game ending or loss of save file etc. It seems that they don't just send the little bit of code needed to fix but instead give you huge chunks of files to make sure it embeds into your install 100% successfully.

Yes it would be ideal if they released the perfect game on day 1 but the size and scale of modern titles mean that is a very long drawn out process and the accountants who allocated the budget to the game want to see their return ASAP so push the production team to get the game out in a barely playable state often and then expect a release of patches to recover the position.

Most people accept it. Love for the game. understanding of the process. Some games are utterly broken though and the pressure to get the fix out is massive as people start wanting their cash back.

Appreciate you probably knew that but hey :-)

Cheers.

Why would the bug fixes be 50% bigger in size than the whole original game? Seems crazy - could understand it if the 56gb replaced the disc 42gb, but not in addition

Reality? Who really knows.

Likelihood? They provided you some more content for online gaming.

Other option? Potentially the replacement files are larger for some reason though I agree hard to vision an increase in 12gb. You could try playing the game not attached to the internet. Just play the disc that arrived. it "should" be possible to play it through. Sony and Microsoft will be tough on game devs and studios that release completely unplayable games on day 1.

In most cases you just plug it in and go and have your dinner and when u come back it is installed and the updates are downloaded.

Forza Horizon 2 is free on Games for Gold right now. A hell of a game for free.
Fun racing rather than way too serious sim style. You could at least download it then delete for using later.
Once you have downloaded it you have the licence for as long as you have Gold.
Just another free game to add to the library for the future.
Also there are lots of free car packs on the store too now so you get quite a few cars to start off with.

A big factor is also how much game data a game disc can physically hold... Final Fantasy 15 for example, it's total install size weighs in at 77gb.

I'm pretty sure xbox one blue ray discs top out at around 50gb.

similar gameplay but different map and different tracks. FH2 is set in southern france/italy....quite a different vibe to FH3.

They stand apart enough to warrant having a blast on FH2 for free.

Gears of War was quite satisfying in co-op. Can't remember the rating though.... It's reasonably graphic from memory.

The Telltale walking dead games are excellent, especially for the older gamer.

18 rated, I think there is an option to turn the swearing and gore off but not sure if that affects the pretty brutal executions
