Looking at taking the plunge on a VR kit for the PC. Oculus Rift or HTC Vive? Is the extra £100 worth it?

Struggling to find good recent reviews that don't just summarise as "get whichever you prefer!"
From what I've read it seems to be the extra £100 is worth it for room based games, if you want to sit in a chair and play (ie mainly driving and flight sims) then the Rift is just as good.

Anyone see the 'leaked' Valve headset images floating around. Not looked into it in any detail but an interesting development especially bundled with knuckles and apparently a VR HL game.

3 new things from Valve?

HL3 CONFIRMED!

Can't say I have any issues with movement based games on a Rift...

I bought the extra sensor for the Rift for 70 quid. Even without it the roomscale stuff works ok, as long as you face the two sensors but tracking is absolutely fine.

Some questions if I may as a non-vr user whose son wants VR for Christmas.

Games availability - Looking at the HTC Vive, would getting the Playstation VR be disappointing in comparison to the games available on PC? Cost isn’t the issue there, wouldn’t mind saving a few bob but I’m prepared to spend if it’s worthwhile.

Superhot VR looks amazing.

PC specs - my son’s PC has: GTX 1060 6gb, i5, 8gb 2400mhz RAM. Is the RAM (or lack of) an issue?

I have a GTX1080, 16gb Ram, I7. The room it’s in isn’t suitable for moving about though, office type room with my laid up motorbike in as well. But my question there is, how easy is it to move the setup from one PC to another?

TL;DR - Any general tips for a noob to VR basically. What’s worth it and what isn’t? A good starting point with games?

Ideally the lighthouses need to be solidly mounted, mine are on a wall. Although they don't need a usb connection they do need power.
You can buy extra lighthouses or some people use tall stands. Ideally they should be over head height.

You don't have to wall mount but everytime you move them you should recalibrate the play area. Especially the floor.
It doesn't take long to do it's just a bit annoying. I have my vive in my cinema room (a double garage) sorry it's not very PH.
I used to keep the headset/lighthouses in one place and move the PC until I got a second VR machine

PSVR just needs the camera but there is a calibration process.

In summary if I had to set it up everytime I used it I wouldn't use it.

PSVR is a good intro, Vive or OR are the real-deal. You have two PC's that will run this ok (1060) and very well (1080). I'd go PC, more games, more choice can combine with other kit for sims and you've not tied in to the Sony closed ecosystem.

Certainly would not do it any harm to have more RAM. It should be readily available on eBay.

Of course, the trick is buying exactly the correct sort.

Mine is handling everything the Rift has thrown at it so far on that spec, but more would be good just to leave some headroom.

Only resource issue I have seen is in some 3d paint thing but not sure whether it was memory.

The configurator on the Crucial website might be able to help with that:

And the Steam VR assessment tool will tell you how well the PC can run VR. Those specs should be OK
Another vote for a PC set up here,so many more games and options.
My spec is similar IIRC,and it handles VR for complex flight Sims like DCS just fine.. although I have had to spend 2 nights setting up the bloody HOTAS banghead
Still not finished, frown

Vive, Steam credit and RAM for Christmas then. Will see what Black Friday brings.

We’ll be having new room space come the Spring so his PC will go into a, well, man cave with the VR in mind to how we set the room up.

Mine is set up like this.
The actual blue area is about 2.5m by 4m. Ideally I'd like another 50cm in each direction which should be doable with a bit of rearranging.

Tempted to pick up a PS VR in the Black Friday sales.........is it worth paying extra to get the Move controllers as well?

I very nearly spent £540 on a used MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X 11GB today. I was in an offer / counter-offer back&forth with a seller, but they only had a feedback rating of 6, and then they accepted an offer from someone else before I made my mind up.

Frankly, in hindsight, I'm slightly relieved.

I tried both the Vive and Rift before making a purchase and found the Vive software to be a chore. The Rift on the other hand just works.

Also, the hand controllers for the Rift are a triumph in usability engineering.

And finally Super Hot in VR is just amazing. Still my favourite game.

Move controllers are essential in my opinion.
