You really feel like you there and are really being chased, shot at etc.

Thankfully I don't seem to have any other problems like motion sickness - just being frighted to death !
How are you finding the Acer snuffy? My computer isn't up to scratch to run a Vive/Rift (GTX970 only) but the WMR tool says it can run the Acer so I'm looking seriously at getting one. Hasn't dipped below £200 yet so fingers crossed for black Friday/ cyber Monday...!

If it helps, I've been running my rift with a GTX970 (along with a Ryzen 1600, 16GB ram). I am planning to replace the 970, but only in anticipation of playing some titles like Project Cars 2 (which are particularly CPU & GPU-heavy) and hopefully bumping up the super-sampling level slightly.

My experience of SuperHot, Robo-recall, Beat Saber, Lone Echo etc. is that you can have a good VR time with a 970.

The visuals obviously aren't as good as they could be (and upping the detail levels and super-sampling gives me a good idea of how it could/would look and run with more GPU grunt), but it definitely works 'fine' with the less-intensive titles - so I wouldn't rule out the rift/vive entirely based on running a 970.

Looks like we've got similar spec machines

I ran my GTX760 on an Oculus Rift just fine, sure there were some tweaks for PC2 and Elite but for Beatsaber, Superhot and Space Pirate Trainer everything ran just fine out the box!

Having just upgraded to a GTX1060 (a 1080 was still outta reach) I can confirm that the GPU heavy stuff is MUCH improved but the basic stuff is just the same

Okay, looks like the Occulus Rift is £349 right now. A few tips please gentleman:
What are the essential VR games?
Any extras/parts/peripherals I should also get?

Hi.

I made some comments on Page 5.

Driving games are amazing in VR.

Well, it's odd, but I think I've fallen into the trap of not using it (seems a common thread). So I've bought a few new games but all of them non-VR and played those instead. I did buy something that was SteamVR so it should work with WMR. It looked good (I can't recall what it was called now) but it was such a faff to get going and some of the controls I just could not see how they worked (i.e. I needed to do something but it did not matter which thing on the controller I pressed I could not get it to work).

Also, I can only compare it to a GearVR (S6) I tried a while ago. I'm not sure it looks much better really. The main difference is being able to "see" the controllers turn into a gun or a hand or whatever. Also, I've never used a Vive or Rift so can't compare them to the Acer.

They are still £200 and at that price I'd say I'm not unhappy with it. I should really try and use it more, but then by the fact that I'm not probably means something.

I also find I can never get the display that sharp, it's always a bit blurry (without or with my glasses makes no difference).

So I think I may be saying what a lot of people say about about VR; It's amazing and then you sort of lose interest in it.

Plenty of VR games, some good, some bad and it depends on what you class as essential and genre.

Beatsaber - Excellent especially now that the discord community have go a hold of it and there are now endless reams of tracks/levels to get through.

Space Pirate Trainer - Good shoot'em'up that works well if a little repetitive.

Elite Dangerous - Fantastic visuals but the game itself in both 2D and VR can be a bit of a grind.

IL2 Stormakov - Great in VR

Star Trek Bridge Crew - Good fun if a little formulaic

Superhot - Fantastic in VR

Google Earth - Good for flying around the world

Lone Echo - Not played this yet but it reviews very well

Project Cars 2 - Superb in VR, very immersive, the first time I was using it I braked too lat for Redgate at Donington and tapped the car in front, I winced and steadied myself expecting the seat to move hehe

Plenty more reviews in the thread if you have a look around

I see this a lot both online and from my real life friends and it basically boils down to the fact that the technology is just not quite there yet. I am sure it's the future, in perhaps 10 years time a lot of gamers will be laughing at people who still use those quaint flat monitors but like a famous beer commercial once said, "it's not quite ready yet".

I totally agree. It's still rather at "novelty" level right now.

Don't get me wrong - I'm glad I bought one, and it's been a fantastic experience. But a good example of why it isn't there yet is with The Solus Project. I tried it in VR, but it just worked much better in 2D and I ended up preferring it that way.

I think another issue is that the software just isn't there yet. A lot of VR games are a bit naff, if I'm totally honest.

I still think that 'What Remains of Edith Finch' should be redone for VR though. It would really benefit from it.

I've yet to see what I would call a full triple AAA VR title, what used to be called killer apps or system sellers back in the day. Even those carrying triple AAA names are often limited in some way or aren't quite the finished article. Yes the hardware is a bit clunky right now but probably just about good enough but the software isn't quite there

I've had a PSVR since launch, I've bought a few VR games when they've been reduced in price but nothing that has made me think OMG I need that NOW. I've not bought a VR title on launch day or pre-ordered one like I might do for my favourite 2d franchises which says it all really.

Absolutely this. I think the problem is that the developers haven't quite worked out what a polished aaa VR game should be just yet.

All my VR time these days is spent playing Project Cars 2. VR still shines brightest in these seated experience driving and flying games that weren't developed exclusively as VR experiences because the whole package nicely polished.

I would agree, its great but I think the next iteration will be the proper start.

It needs to be wireless really and PC specs need to catch up and exceed requirements, a lot will be holding off as it requires a big spend to update a PC that runs fine in 2D.

The games arent really there yet either, Arizona Sunshine is pretty good but really, looks like a 12 year old non VR PC title.

I remember VR being touted in the eighties, amazing how its taken 30 or so years to get to a viable consumer level product.

Still loving it though.

Bought Doom VFR the other day, that seems like a premium title. Needs a decent graphics card though. As AAA experiences I'd rate that and Lone Echo plus Robo Recall.

Well It's timeto consult the hive mnd.

It's time to replace my GTX970.

My current shortlist is.

GTX1070TI - £400ish

GTX1080 or RTX2070 - £500ish

I am mostly concerned with VR performance as the TV is 1080p

Sadly I'm limited to buying from Amazon (vouchers from work).

Any thought on what to get? Not sure if the 1070Ti will be man enough for Assetto Corsa Competizione. And £500 is bloody expensive. I did think of nabbing my GTX1080 from my gaming PC but it won't fit in the case.

Take a look on pcpartpicker for a range of prices from different suppliers, there wasn't that big a difference between a 1070ti and a 1080 when I bought mine a couple of months ago

The Zotac NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11 GB Mini is currently £560 on Amazon, which is the cheapest 1080 Ti that I have seen. I'm not sure what compromises have been made on the mini over the standard 1080 Ti, but could be worth looking at as the 1080Ti is significantly better than the 1080. Plus, being a mini, it may fit in your case.
