Thought I would give the heads up

Lenovo explorer WMD £109.99/£149.99

https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/lenovo-explorer-w...

I was ready to go to the rift but black friday sale wasnt as good as I had hoped just before ordering anyway this popped up.

From reviews, The resolution is slightly better than the rift, tracking can be slightly worse as does not use external sensors but people say they havent had any real issues.

Fixed IPD is the main downside if you use glasses or have weird eyes.

Im planning on using it mainly for Iracing/seated sims rather than the dance around stuff untill the pimax comes about.

If you use a student email and go onto lenovos education store its £109.99, If you go through the comments on the hotukdeals site, Someone said if you use co-op bank or something its also £109.99, He posted the "exclusive code" so should be able to be used by everyone.

£110 is worth a punt, If its not great you could sell it for that and buy the rift anyway.

Anyone got Asetto gCorsa running in VR, I got it the other day and got it to display in VR after a bit of faffing about but cant for the life of me get the car to move using the Xbox controller, it shows up in the UI and registers button/stick presses but nothing when I start a game, car sits there idling.

Got skyrim vr, while on offer.
Brilliant.

Looking forward to the Subnautica dlc, whenever that is released.

J4CKO - I'll have a look later and see what settings I have applied.

In other news I bought a RTX2070, which should arrive tomorrow. Time to retire off the GTX970.

I went for a GTX 1080Ti to replace my GTX980OC

The score on the "VR Extreme" preset on the Unigine SuperPosition benchmark went from 6,003 "capable" for the GTX980OC to 10,000 "ready" for the GTX1080Ti

On the "1080p Extreme" benchmark it was 2,395 => 5,816

Meanwhile on 3DMark's Firestrike Ultra benchmark it was 3,161 => 6,994

I also got AC the other day and had similar issues getting the wheel & pedals to work. In the end, it was a simple case of going into the settings and running a setup wizard for the wheel, pedals and shifter to confirm my inputs. Maybe it is the same for a controller?

You really need a wheel though smile

Logitech G29 was really cheap the other day.

I second that you really need a wheel with VR to get the full experience. I would also add that Project Cars 2 (if you don't already have it) is a much smoother VR experience as all menus can be navigated easily using your wheel/controller buttons. I have found Assetto Corsa much clunkier and more of a faff.

The actual VR driving experience once you're in the car however, is on a par.

Yes Assetto Corsa is a real PITA to set up, who on earth designed that, it's shocking?

ISTR having to watch multiple videos to get everything to recognise each other and keep restarting my PC to check. Also sat in the pits doing nothing many times.

Even now I've got it working I have to take my mouse to the chair to intricately move a little yellow dot to the start button to actually start the game, can't seem to get any of the wheel buttons to do anything. Great game though.

Thanks for the PC2 tip, I see it is in the Steam Sale so will give that a try. It may takeover if it is as good to play and easier to run.

There also some great Youtube videos on how to improve your driving and they've made a big difference to my times, creeping into top quartile on here now:

Example tutorial here, some stuff obvious but there is loads more to look at:

Using the mouse is a PITA but, I can live with it. I need to map buttons to re-centre the VR as quite often is sets my POV as about 10ft behind the car when I restart a time attack and I have to exit out to correct it (it is a as simple as mapping the glance left & right buttons to wheel buttons apparently).

I've also been tinkering a bit with the FFB .ini files in Assetto Corsa based on a bit of online research and driving the Lotus 111R around Nurburgring GP circuit this morning felt sublime! Need to test out a few other vehicles but, I'm hoping I've found a sweet spot smile

If you go with PCars 2, I highly recommend the Jack Spade FFB files if you don't like the default. Link to a very large thread here - http://forum.projectcarsgame.com/showthread.php?51... Fairly easy to set up once you've gotten your head around it and a few different options to try.

ooooh, I've had a "your pimax is ready to ship" message.

Just need to decide if I want the 8k or 5k+
I'm thinking 5k+ as it's native res rather than the upscaling used in the 8k. But then it's close.
Anyone else had to make that decision?

Sadly not, I missed the boat on that one so am awaiting general release at a sensible price (hopefully following many positive reviews!) I will be waiting with interest to hear your verdict once you have it in your hands!!

In your shoes, I think I'd go for the 5K too.

Primax looks interesting. Since it uses Steam VR / Vive base stations I've probably bought the Betamax of VR by getting an Oculus Rift. *sighs*

I'll be interested to hear how you get on with it.

Edit: I confess I wasn't aware of it until now. A quick google later, and I found some interesting reviews and articles:

Don't the current range of graphics cards struggle with some games on higher rates of sampling even on the Vive or OR? What would you need to properly handle a 5k or even 8k VR headset, SLI'd 1080ti's?

Probably best to mention that 8k is a bit disingenuous, it's really 2x 4k screens.
On the 8k they are I think running at 1440 and upscaling, so not that bad.
Then there is something called brain warp which is a reprojection software.
I think I'll be able to run it with my 1080.

I think they've improved it a lot since those early reviews came out. Most seem positive these days.

Looks like the same stand as mine sits on (gathering dust I have to admit):

I was using a polystyrene head as my VR headset stand for a while, only it confuses the Rift into thinking that the headset is being worn so it keeps re-launching the Oculus app every time I close it.

Now it just sits on a letter stand, propped up by the manual from my Golf. smile

(Sorry about the mess)
