From October, the Facebook-owned company will require its users to log in via the social media platform and merge any existing Oculus accounts with accounts from Facebook. From January 2023, all un-merged Oculus accounts will be shuttered.

"If you're an existing user and choose not to merge your accounts, you can continue using your Oculus account for two years," Oculus wrote in a blog post announcing the mandate.https://www.zdnet.com/article/facebook-forcing-ocu...
Well, by then my Rift will either have been replaced by a newer (competitor) product or will be sitting on a shelf unused. Either way, I won't be linking my Oculus account to my Facebook account.

Surely you have more than one e-mail address?Hilts said:

I don't have a Facebook account.
What will I have to do?
I don't fancy setting up a real Facebook account, not at all.
Why not? You have no issue setting up an Oculus account and a Pistonheads account. Just set up an account and then don't use it.I don't have a Facebook account.

Having said that, it's probably reasonably benign to link your Oculus account to your Facebook account, but it is something I would prefer not to do.
I would only ever consider a burner account with Facebook which means at some point it'll get tripped which means giving up all the content I paid for for an action totally unrelated to anything I did on the platform.
In theory you're only supposed to ever have one Facebook account so there's no starting another one, or you have to provide a government ID and an apology to Mark saying you'll be a good little ant in future.
Or I could shop elsewhere which is what I'll do. If someone roots one then I'll think again.
Not sure people have thought through how gross this move is, or realised how much more gross it'll become over time.

Indeed. In theory. Certainly there are well-documented cases of stage performers (eg. Drag Queens) having a separate FB account for their stage persona and FB trying to force them to make it a Page or Group attached to their main FB account which they argue could compromise their personal safety by revealing their real life identity.
But then again, I know many people who are residents of Second Life who have run a separate FB account for their avatar for years without problems, although I suspect that is the case of flying under the radar.
But, yes, you are correct. In theory you should only have one FB account.
I wonder what sort of data FB collect from the usage of the headset and what they do with it ..... It's going to be more than just an email address and name that they are after. Maybe they see it as a way to get people who would otherwise avoid FB, onto their service and in their sights.
Mind you, they already create shadow profiles based on data they collect from exiting accounts of people who know you.

They want to 'bring people together' so in future there'll be communal work spaces, play spaces, families nattering. Some will spend hours of their day inside it. That's plenty of juicy info to tap. Mind you, they already create shadow profiles based on data they collect from exiting accounts of people who know you.
And things like what you look at in game and what you favour and what you don't will be noted and used for fine tuning.
It's bit like having a broadcast chip in your brain except with this you're strapping the chip on.

They want to gather info on all the perverted VR porn you look at so they can blackmail you.
Just as well it doesn't use a camera to track movements like the PSVR does ... whacking off in front of a camera connected to the internet is not a smart move - just ask Leslie Grantham
