That is exactly my experience as well.

Initially "wow, that's fantastic!" and then my headset sat on my desk for a few months getting dusty. Until finally I boxed it back up and put it in the loft, that must be over 12 months ago now.

The most ironic thing is that I bought myself a Windows Mixed Reality headset, and it seems that Microsoft feels the same way about them as I do because they have also lost interest in the things as well.
For me, the greatest selling point of the Quest is the untethered 'stand-alone' ability. Much as I love my PSVR, I play it very little due to the faffing around every time I want to use it.

And the secondary ability to use with a PC for PC-based VR games is great - especially as they are developing an official wireless link capability. The 'Virtual Desktop' semi-official solution is already pretty good.

There are a number of Asus Wi-Fi 6 routers up as Amazon Prime Day Deals today. The Quest 2 is compatible with Wi-Fi 6 - although not sure how much gain there would be here.

That's the reason (at the time) I went for the WMR headset. i.e. it was just a single cable (split at the end to connect to a HDMI and USB socket) and you did not need the camera around your room.

Yes it's good that it's untethered but the games you can play in untethered mode just aren't very state of the art. Yes gameplay is still important but personally I want VR to be as immersive as possible and to me that means top notch graphics which is why the Quest 2 holds little interest for me, unless they can prove the wireless link will work effectively. Unfortunately Current VR WIFI tech isn't really up to scratch as it doesn't provide enough bandwidth to move the necessary amounts of data around.

There are however things coming down the pipeline which should bump up VR WIFI bandwidth enough to let it display ultra hd graphics. Thus VR gen 2 or even 3 will be the holy grail for me. Headsets with sufficient WIFI bandwidth to provide untethered, 4k graphics to the headsets and PC's with enough oomf to run it all properly. It shouldn't be too far off in all honestly, we are probably talking a couple of years at the most.

Quite a few people getting Facebook account bans setting this up. It looks like many are new accounts but with correct details so maybe they think they're electionbots. This is a quite ludicrous policy and the reason I'm not going to bother. They'd better rethink or refine this.

Well the Quest 2 is leaps and bounds ahead of the PSVR. Image quality and tracking is fantastic and I love that it's completely self contained for the native games, which I would say at least match PSVR titles, if not exceed it. Great to have locomotion on the hand controllers at last, too.

Won't have a chance to test it with my PC for a while though as it's currently at another address and I'm WFH elsewhere. It will likely tip me into getting a new gen GFX card for the PC. The wireless link option looks very interesting too, now that I'm used to having no wires to worry about.

The supplied headstrap isn't great but it gets you going. The much maligned onboard 'ear speakers' (built into the strap connectors on the headset itself) are actually quite decent though, if you don't want to mess around with putting proper headphones on to get the best audio experience. One more thing that just adds to the pick up and play element of the experience.

Quite a bit of light leakage through the nose cutout for me, so I'll be looking for a third party replacement there.

It seems to really eat the battery though - 2 hours is probably all you can hope for and if they go 90Hz for all games then likely even less. Probably an Elite+Battery Strap is the way to go, or maybe wait to see what third parties come up with. Those connectors should make 3rd party straps really easy to fit.

I had a play about with mine last night for a few hours and was pretty impressed with some of the games.

It is pretty exhausting on the eyes though

I’ve just been given one of these today as a present by my next door neighbour spin which was something of a surprise.

It’s not something I’d have gone out and bought myself but I’m pretty gobsmacked. I’ve never ever tried VR before. Very much a case of turn it on, and follow your nose. Just about the first thing I did was fire up an immersive video to n the first page with some little hottie called Brooke Evers - I nearly jumped out of my skin; it was like she was a solid, real thing.

It’s very slick. I love watching stuff that looks like you’re watching a bloody vaaaasst screen. I could do with some game suggestions - Elite Dangerous is on the cards and hopefully there are some good racing games.

I’m still a bit taken aback. Nice surprise. Maybe he wants to build a nuclear reactor down the bottom of the garden?

Yeah, the *ahem* adult content experience is amazing, I have a few terabytes of the stuff. The problem being you can't see what's going on around you, imagine the Mrs walking in while you're effectively wearing a blindfold, and deaf to the outside world... going at it. Risky game!

The 4k/5k/6k stuff is truly immersive wink

Whirligig VR Player is the best I've used for watching videos. You just need to select the correct mode, SBS/OU etc...

Got my Q2 a couple of days ago due to being laid up in bed post op, really enjoying it! Playing poker a lot and watching videos etc. Can’t wait to play table tennis and echo for a bit more once i can actually stand and move around the room.

Any hints and tips, videos, content etc that I should be looking for??

After having this for a whole weekend I have found my favourite thing is watching films on what looks like a massive IMAX screen. Not tried 3D and at someones suggestion tried pr0nhub - that just gave me a view of a split screen. Didn't really bother with that.

How good is the image? The Quest 1 has waay too much screen door effect for it to be tolerable. It's a shame as the software was A1.

This is why I will not be buying a Q2 and i suspect it might actually help keep the hold up the prices of used Q1's.

Its not just getting banned for an incorrectly detected fake FB account that will see your Q2 getting bricked by facebook, If you pick up any kind of ban ( I have had a few when posting in political groups) then you wont be able to use your headset until FB says you can!

That type of arrangement is not for me !

I don't disagree - it is intolerable. However, it won't brick your device (as in, "render it permanently unusable") and it won't even stop you from using it with Steam VR, it will just lock you out of any content on the Oculus platform. Which obviously is pretty bad, for sure, but a very long way from "bricked".

I may have been misinformed, I read an article that said your headset was essentially turned into an expensive paperweight, for YOU. but you could sell it and someone else would be able to use it.

The article (or maybe it was a video) also said that people are now figuring out how to jail break them, which will improve the situation.

I've just bought one and sync'd my Oculus account with my Facebook one. It's fine foe me as a very casual Facebook user (I've had an account since it started and have only posted anything a handful of times), but it could be very limiting for people who do use it a bit more.

Is there confirmation of that? You need a whole load of Oculusness to use Link too. I can't see them magically holding a virtual hand over your eyes to shield the library on your way to Steam. And then there's sidequest too.

No way will I be buying a 2 because of this regardless.

Sorry, I should have preceded that with "It is my understanding that..." or "I am under the impression that..."
I wasn't speaking authoritatively.

However, this is just a peripheral with drivers etc. and you log into the Oculus platform to access content, and you can also log into the Steam VR platform to access content there too. Although, having said that, it's unclear if you can log into Steam VR without being logged into the Oculus platform.

But are we really saying that Facebook are going to disable your device at the driver level if you are not logged into your Facebook account?

I thought they were going to lock you out of the Oculus platform, and any content you may have bought on it, if your Facebook account is locked?
