They appear a bit pointless to me when you can use your phone/tablet/computer to emulate pretty much anything you want.

Different experience altogether, I'd say.
Plug it in, no messing about with downloading/installing/setting up software. Plus that controller will bring back memories, surely.

It's not aimed at people who know how to run emulators and iso files though, it's aimed at people like my sister, who last time she came to visit thought my SNES mini was the coolest thing ever, but couldn't get her head around how it was possible to have all the games on there without using cartridges.

These things seem more aimed at people who missed out the first time around but get all 'nostalgic' for an era they didn't actually grow up in. A bit like how I see some people getting all excited over Stranger Things and other 80's homages despite the fact they weren't born until the 90s. NES, SNES, Playstation, I played them all the first time around and having had most of the ROMs and emulators sat on my PC for the last 20 years the only game I ever actually bothered to play through was Secret of Mana 2 (and that was circa 2001).

Going back to these games now just ruins the memory as they haven't really aged well. A good example of this is the Shadow of the Colossus remake on PS4, so many people say "this is always how I remember it looking when I played it originally on the PS2", and then you look at the screenshots of the actual PS2 version and go "wtf is this st?"

Playing retro games can be worthwhile if;

1) the game was genuinely amazing in its day

AND

2) it’s been remastered or at least rendered in high definition

Most folk don’t tend to realise just how terrible decades-old games look. So no, personally I won’t be spending money on this smile

ETA: great example for me is N64’s Goldeneye 007. Some years ago I played it emulated. The graphics, animation, audio and general production values were so bad that I couldn’t be bothered to find out if the gameplay was as good as I remembered. I suspect it probably wasn’t.

I have the NES and SNES ones, so may as well add this to the pile of consoles that don't get used. hehe

I have preordered one but not sure if I will actually go through with the preorder. I hardly played the SNES mini, as a previous poster said, nostalgia should perhaps stay as nostalgia.

It's a thumbs up from me. I still have all my gaming machines from Spectrum to PS4 but the PS1 is the one I keep going back to. Much prefer the ps1 style controller and have never found the thumb controllers that came along with the ps2 comfortable at all. None of the games are scary anymore but the old ones have much more atmosphere, despite poorer graphics. Just my opinion. Tin helmet on.

The main issue is likely to be how badly 3d ages, with screen and texture res being so low, and most importantly the framerates. 2d games age a lot better than 3d, and great 2d pixel art like Metal Slug looks just as good today as it always did. But look at a 3d game like Gran Turismo now and you have to be pretty hardcore to get past the low res and low framerates.

Doom 2 is my favourite game of all time, but I can look past the low-res graphics due to the framerate being great. That doesn't apply to an older console game unfortunately, not when its on the original hardware still, you need something like the Shadow of the Colossus remake where the res and fps is much better to make it palatable to most people.

I would be nice if they include Doom, the creepy ambient music and lighting in that version made it feel like a completely different game. Also, if you haven't already try the Project Brutality overhaul for the original games, it gives them a completely new lease of life.

I have recently been playing my N64 and PS1 / PS2 more than anything modern. Games of choice atm are:

-Theme hospital / Command and Conquer (when on my own)
-Pokemon Snap (with the gf)
-Gran Turismo 3 (with car mates)

After a few days you genuinely get used o the poorer graphics and the gameplay shines through, Gran Turismo 3 being a great example.

Nope. Based on my brief experience with a mini-SNES before i gave it away, retro games are best left as good memories.

Ooh, I loved Syphon Filter. Some decent stuff there. Can’t see myself buying one though.

Just about half those games might be worth a play. But as said....no Grasn Turismo, surely that should have been the big title to draw people in!

Its probably to do with licensing of the car manufactures .... not worth the $$ to get the additional license...
