OK, have just noticed this game. Most games are disappointing, but two that stand out for me are Horizon:Zero Dawn and the new Assassin's Creed games.

If I bought this, based on the two above games I have enjoyed, would I like this one?
I'd recommend watching a few lets plays of the game and see what you think; from what I've seen it doesn't seem to have the same high-polish of most of Sony's first-party games. The good news is they seems to have patched a lot of the bugs that were in the review copies - a lot of gamers saying they aren't experiencing the same game-breaking bugs that the official review outlets got a few weeks ago. That said, a few things seem jarring - seems to be a lot of cut-scenes that take you out of the game, and long (very long) loading screens.

Was quite excited about it, then the reviews came out, think it might be a decent ish game but probably one of those you pick up when its £20-30 rather than £50

Really enjoying it actually. Played about 15 hours so far. If you like open world games then I’m sure you will love it.

It’s not too dissimilar to fallout in some ways. I’m surprised there’s been many negative reviews.

Basically you drive about on your bike completing missions for local groups or for your brother. All the time whilst trying to get eaten by zombies.

There’s a good day/night interface with changing weather. Zombies are stronger and more numerous on a night but can’t see you as easily. I tend to try and do more missions in the day (you can sleep to change the time).

Your bike is the main mode of transport (world is too large/dangerous to travel far on foot). You have to repair your bike with scrap which is found here and there. You also have to top up with fuel so keep an eye out for gas cans or destroyed petrol stations.

Weapons can be bought, found and upgraded.

Skill points are earned and can be used to upgrade health and gain attributes (similar to far cry).

I’m not very far in but it’s a solid 8/10 so far for me. I’m really enjoying it.

Downsides are limited but I agree with some of the reviews saying load times are long (although you come across these load times just once or twice in a 3hr stint on the game so not too troublesome.

I initially thought the bike handling was sloppy but following some upgrades it’s actually fine.

Can’t really think of any other negatives off top of my head.

I love open world games such as fallout and far cry. I think this game (so far) is better than far cry. It’s unlikely to match fallout but then again little can touch that series for me.

Fire away with any questions. I probably won’t get chance to play again until Friday night so bare with me.

Thats interesting thanks

Although your comparisons worry me as I haven't got on with any of the FarCry games, do love GTA, Assasins Creed, Uncharted etc, are there elements like that? I always found FarCry a bit grindy

Maybe I should wait for a price drop

GTA is one of my favourite ever games. This is similar in its an open world shooter but from there on in the similarities end.

I’ve not played assassins creed (not sure why as it seems up my street) but in regards Far Cry I think this game is much better. The first 2 far cry’s were good but I agree they have been sloppy recently.

This game has a lot of sneaking about. It’s all about stealth. You simply can’t go in all guns blazing like you do on GTA. I love the stealth factor of this game. Sometimes you come up against situations where you have to run. Tackling more than 4-5 zombies with melee attacks is a no no. Tackling more than 10 using guns would be tough. Last night I estimated 60-80 in a horde moving through the valley below me. I absolutely st myself. These zombies can climb on roofs etc and are a bit terrifying. No option but to get on the bike and get out of there.

You’ve also got roving bandit gangs that are out to get you. Watch as much game play as you can on YouTube. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed after listing those games; you seem to be on a similar wavelength to me when it comes to open world shooters.

Useful thanks, will have a look online

RE Assasins Creed, if you have never played one probably worth a look, they have however got into the habit of releasing the same game under a different name every few years, I probably won't buy another now as its just the same, but fresh to it, would be fun

Thanks for the heads up RE assassins creed. It’s always been on my list but I’ve just never got round to it. I only get through about 1 game per year due to work commitments and having a young child. I suppose there has always been something else that I’ve fancied slightly more.

I've been trying to play it, but it's been mostly frustrating.

- Seems to take a very long time to load.
- Controls are poor - holding down the thumbstick to run? Great if you like a permanent imprint of the thumbstick on your (now numb) thumb. Otherwise stupid. Just put it on a face button like every single other game, there's a reason they did that you know.
- Perform some actions and he swaps from the melee weapon to what seems to be a random pistol. Great, I was about to melee that zombie now I am forced to use a loud gun instead or get my face bitten off. Thanks a bunch.
- Sometimes the weapon wheel thing seems to ignore that I'm holding a direction trying to select something, so I have to exit the menu and come back in again.
- The bike handling in the intro was comically bad. I can't say it makes me look forward to ever having to use the bike again in the rest of the game.
- pick some things up by walking over them, but other stuff you have to hold square - why??? Why would I NOT pick up that piece of loot? Understandable for weapons but not for loot items, just let me hoover them up as I can do with the loot the zombies drop. Pointless busy work to make it seem "deeper" and more RPG-ish I suppose.

On the plus side is looks nice enough, voice acting seems OK, atmosphere is pretty good etc..

But to top it off - I spent about an hour in the first little area, looting everything, carefully stealth-killing zombies, then saved it and went for dinner, only to discover the next day that it didn't in fact save because (after looking online) - I've not yet got the motorbike. It let me select the Save option and whatnot, theres even a savegame with the correct timestamp, but I'm back at the start of that mission.

At this point the joypad was launched across the room accompanied by some very loud profanity, and it's not been loaded up since.

Agree with the load times but I wouldn’t say it’s a huge issue. I can’t say the other issues have affected me.

In terms of holding down square to pick something up, you have to do this for everything except zombie ears. The zombies don’t drop loot you take their ears after killing them to trade at outposts.

Bike handling improves significantly after the intro.

I can’t say that I’ve ever swapped from a melee weapon to a gun accidentally and holding down L3 to run isn’t an issue for me either.

I thought I'd resurrect and add to this thread.

I got this at the end of July, second hand for £25. It's well worth it. I'm really enjoying it, not sure how far I've got into the story, but I've played a good 30+ hours.

It's nice being open world, and I enjoy the Zombie Apocalypse stuff in it, it is very much a stealth based game, enough to do, see and collect to stop it getting repetitive. Plus it throws up some surprises which really do make you have to stop and think and just watch what's going on.

Last night I was given a mission to go and find a woman that had done a runner from a camp. Got to the location, stopped to watch what the few Zombies around were doing, just hiding in some tall bushes, suddenly found myself absolutely surrounded as a herd of 100 or so Zombies bimbled past where I was hiding on both sides. Had to wait a while before they'd all passed before I could move, and while hiding a few of them got extremely close to me.

I think's it's really atmospheric and I probably have many more hours to go to completion. Definitely worth it I think.

Still my go-to game at the moment and I'm very much enjoying it. I've had a quick peek at the walk-through just to see how far through I am and I've barely scratched the surface!

I've had a couple of glitches which have been frustrating. After you rescue Lisa you have to confront a bear. I spotted it a mile off and just hid in the petrol station and fire arrows at him. Took 90% of his health without him even reacting

Loading times aren't an issue although I do have an SSD in my PS4 Pro.

On the original PS4 it does noticeably struggle in some places. Great game otherwise, and for £20 in the spring sale, it is a steal.

Still bashing through this - putting in 30 minutes most nights and it's very enjoyable. I think I've got to a point in the story now where it's starting to get interesting again as it was starting to get a bit repetitive.

Not had the balls to take on a horde yet!

Absolute bargain at £25.

Once you learn the skills to make the napalm bombs and ensure you keep a plentiful supply then taking on the horde is pretty easy. I also got in to the habit of finding their hideouts at night and planting plenty of remote detonator bombs, then come back when they are in there and take them on.

Loved the game, when you come whizzing around a corner on the bike and are suddenly faced with a huge horde certainly gets the gamer adrenaline going!

Just finished playing this through twice...once on normal then second time on NG+ Survival II, which wasn’t actually as hard as I thought it would be.

I was getting quite bored with it the first time and after finishing it thought I wouldn’t go back but with time on my hands I enjoyed it the second time, probably because I could play it through much faster with all the top weapons from the get go.

The hordes are definitely the “money shot” in the game but they are under-represented in the storyline - only about 3 of them are active until you finish the game. Hordes vary in size from 20 to 600, they definitely get the adrenaline running when you realise your tactics have failed! I will say that the game designers have been very fair - there is always a way to take out every horde without any real threat, IF you survey the area and plan ahead. Smaller hordes you can just go in guns blazing once you’ve levelled up.

Played on a Pro, slow to load but no issues once in the game. Graphics are actually very good and detailed, though without the variety of environments in some other games.

The weapons side I thought was woefully underdone, I only played with about 5 weapons total. All you need is a decent primary (not a shotgun) and a scoped rifle in normal play, switching to a MG when horde hunting.

Overall, definitely worth the £20-£30 it’s currently available for.

After I finished it I read a few websites and watched a few videos...was shocked to see the generally low quality of the content. Obviously rushed out after initial release to be “first to market”, they hadn’t taken the time to really learn any of the depth in the game. For example - there’s a really easy way to defeat the Chemult horde when testing the napalm - but I’ve never seen a reference to it online even though it’s patently designed in and not an environment exploit.

I've seen this and it looks my sort of thing so will probably get it once this is all over.

For reference the last three games I've played and loved have been Mafia 3, mad max and sleeping dogs.

I saw a few people recommend rage 2 as a follow up to mad max but hated it as didn't like the futuristic Ray gun style.

So is it worth me getting?
