Yeah I am not that good LOL.

GR is fly, drop a bomb or two, call people names and then eject whilst inverted at 600kt at 100'.

biggrinbiggrin

(ok there is some occasional serious flying)

(Apologies to everyone else for the thread derail, maybe we need a DCS thread?

Interesting toy. The obvious flaws are that they did the code in python (so quite slow/high latency) with a big disconnect from the core flight model (more latency), the drive system obviously skids a *lot* (see all the wheel marks) which you'll be feeling, and the performance is going to be non-linear because of the position of the seat/occupant within the ball. I bet it makes you really ill, the latency on its own vs the VR is probably enough. Ventilation might be iffy too!

For what it's worth proper fast jet sims usually just go for a full dome visual (unnecessary with VR) and a motion seat (base pad, rear pad, belts) to give the pressure cues plus a restricted pressure suit feed to give some cues from that. It's enough and it works and it doesn't take up any extra space compared to a normal ejector seat. A motion platform is normally +/-2g max so not really suited for this, great for vehicles or normal planes though.

There are some setups using a centrifuge + gimbaled cockpit that can shift change speed really quickly and do the full 0 -> 9g onset in under a second but demand for those is low. People want centrifuge *or* a high fidelity sim, rarely both at the same time.

Only really good for simulating being the ball turret gunner on a B-17 or B-24.

What you really want is one of these:

I guess they just don't look as interesting as a big motion system and it's a little bit trickier for people to understand the idea, but they do work and they don't take up lots of space. You'd think there'd be a bit of a market for a gaming type version for driving or flying, then again I guess most people just don't have the sort of cash even a noddy version would cost.

I’ll definitely be getting this when it is released. I have an Xbox but something tells me that the ‘port’ won’t be as good as the PC version. Which means that I now have a keen interest in building a PC to match the specs.

Looking around, there are a number of suppliers of custom/gaming PCs; will I be best going with something from Overclockers\chilliblast or are there better places to go?

If you're getting a PC only for this I'd hold off. Bandwidth will likely have a bigger impact on your experience than specs and I can't imagine Microsoft will let their Xbox release be sub par.

You might get that final percentile of awesomeness spending another grand or two. You might not.

If however VR tickles you then it might have to be PC.

There’s no way the xbox version will be as good but it might still be great depending on how they make it and what features they sacrifice.

How much do these cost? and how good are they at simulating a flight feel?

Cost? £££££! Actually not sure what they cost now but it would be at least 6 figures for a proper one, quite possibly low 7? For that you do get a very nice replica of a real seat with all the motion bits hidden in it and a box with the controllers in it. Feel wise they're pretty good, at least in conjunction with a proper visual system - they work by simulating the cues of you moving against the seat and belts under load (up to 9g worth) plus all the usual bumps and vibration, rather than throwing the platform around to get the same thing. With the trousers & jacket pumping and the world spinning around outside it's more than good enough.

Some things like proper suit or mask pressures aren't used as they're too dangerous in a normal environment so those are mostly token efforts.

Probably worth mentioning that fast jet stuff often isn't calibrated too much from a sound or motion point of view, it's more 'close enough'. The big full motion things on the other hand are usually set up to be Type 7/Level D and the flight feel is demonstrably accurate and regularly checked and calibrated.

They can be cheaper, a couple of grand, ideal for VR

So I've no real interest in flight sims, they're not my bag. I'm massively impressed with MFS2020 because it looks like a technical marvel.

That being said, this guys channel is great, I've watched a fair few of his vids.

Hooray, a release date if 18th August has been announced, waaay sooner than I thought it would be, in 3 flavours, depending on how many detailed planes and airports you want. Cheapest version included with Game Pass too

Will probably wait for a few reviews before I think about it. I spend waaay too much time in DCS and P3D as it is!

This looks amazing, but I feel they've missed a trick with the lack of VR support. I have been VR flying for over a year now with DCS and XP11 and I just couldn't go back to a flat screen, no matter how good the visuals it would just never feel convicing. That and my crappy rural broadband wouldn't be able to cope.

Sounds like VR is on the cards, just possibly not at launch?

I think that is the plan.
