Takeoff roll in the Cessna must be interesting then
It's rubbish. Basically snake my way down the runway trying to offset the prop and then often immediately get pushed off course. Wish my 3d printer would pull its finger out and stop taking 10 hours to print each part

Try all those tips and much better thanks. Very shallow climb is needed it seems.

Did a proper A->B flight. Took of from Kirkbride Airport, down over the lakes, right down the middle of Windermere, landed at Cark. Messed up the approach so had to go around. Not easy to see s crappy strip when you dont know what you are looking for. Landing wasnt super but I ve seen worse. Taxied in a nice chap with his sticks guided me in to my grass parking spot.

If I'm flying VFR in the Cessna, how do I navigate without looking at the VFR map? I planned a flight from Thurrock Airfield to London City and added two nav aids as way points. Cant remember what they were called but they were lined up with the runway.

Do they beep or give any indication when I'm near? I completely missed them despite being in the right bearing.

I'm no expert (or even mediocre), but basically you need to understand what type of navaid it is. I use Skyvector - select World VFR at the top right for what you want. Then figure out what type of Navaid you're using and write down a flightplan because looking them up in flight is sketchy.

In brief:

A VOR will be in the range 108 to 117.95 MHz(below the voice frequencies), ADF/NDB between 190Khz and 1750. Tune your nav radios for the VORs, and the ADF radio for ADF/NDB. There might be a speaker button depending on the aircraft you're using - once you're tuned and in distance you should get the morse, which is handily shown on the map. Generally dial one in, and when you get close use your second freq to pick up the other. It helps if you know how to trim the aircraft so you can be handsfree when fiddling with radio (or use pause)

ADFs just point in the direction of it (I think), but VORs allow you to set a course and then will tell you if you're left and right of track. Point yourself in the right direction and look out of the window to verify where you're going. If you're low enough you can probably get away with a road map to check!

It gets way more complicated than that if you want to fly accurately, but at that point you might want to consider buying some ppl books and a proper airspace chart if you want to up your game. It's not as bad as the weight of the books would suggest and leads to quite a few aha moments. However, nowt wrong with messing about on the proverbial river whilst violating all sorts of rules of the air smile

I'm no expert either but most nav aids have DME as well dont they, so you would set VOR 1 to follow say track 115 for 10 miles until VOR 2 intercepted track 154 which leads to the runway. Or something similar to that anyway.

Thanks both. I'll look into those. I tried, I suppose a traditional navigation, using the nav log, ETA and timer.

Almost worked, I turned too early but that was my mistake. Luckily it was night and I could see the run way lights.

Not to sound glib, and I know it's only a sim, but it does show how hard flying is. So much to think about and check. Attitude, altitude, air speed, engine revs, position, heading, coms, lights, flaps, trim, and so on.

I got my head around VOR navigation by watching a tutorial by P Gatcomb on youtube.

He has a handy selection of videos going over most aspects of flying and uses MSFS2020 to demo.

Can’t recall what the Cessna has in the cockpit distance measuring wise. I presume you are saying distance to VOR is not available.

BIG (Biggin Hill) is due southish of LCY so you could identify a radial to cross somewhere on the approach to LCY for either runway. Maybe 300 for runway 9, and 030 radials for runway 27. You can obviously align to LCY east or west using the LCY ADF and Heathrow LON VOR.

For true vfr fly up the river / A13.

My rudder peddles are almost complete. Waiting on the RC buggy shocks to come from Germany and need to hook up the wiring. Design was largely taken from https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3475445

I made a couple of mods, notable the base. Going to all that effort to design and make the pedals then nail them to an off-cut of wood seemed incongruous to me. So I made a base from 2040 alu profiles. I've also gone to a bit more effort to hide the wires.

I have lost track of the cost. The base was almost 50 notes on top. If I had waited for stuff to come from China I probably could have saved a bit. But the electronics werent expensive. I splashed out on some Honeywell hall sensors though, may be a waste but didnt want Chinese cheap st failing and having to take everything apart.

Was planning on moving on to an A320 cockpit, but I have had 2nd thoughts. It is going to take months and cost a fortune. Just printing the throttle quadrant was going to need about fifty quids worth of filament and would take two weeks to print with it running 10 hours a day.

Also I dont have time to be flying massive flights in a jet. So thinking of doing maybe a Cessna 172 or 182, or maybe one of the pipers you can buy. Not sure if I want to do a steam dial type one or build a proper fake Garmin.

I’ve been enjoying the microlight, ideal for scenic flights with great views for checking out the scenery and landing in impossibly small areas.

It’s also good for places where the scenery might take a while to load as it’s usually only moving at 50kts or so. hehe

Some cool new features in the recent update with adjusting trim and weight and balance etc.

Really enjoying this now, it’s constantly improving with new features.

The analogue 152 is still one of my favourites, just wish it had a DME. Screw glass cockpits, low and slow whilst wrestling a paper chart is where it's at.

That and landing on hill tops in the Shock Ultra.

Yeah I like the old 152 also. Just been doing an ILS where I first flew them, love rumbling along and hearing the morse idents and seeing the outer marker lights bulbs coming on.

I’m pretty sure the one I flew didn’t have a DME either tbh.

I'm a novice to all of this, so the 152 is all I've really been flying as that was what was used in the tutorials. I've had a sit in a couple of other more modern and sophisticated planes, and they've scared the crap out of me. It's quite a learning curve flying isn't it. wobble

This game really is plagued with problems, I've wasted way too much time on this trying to get it to work properly now. This is the latest problem - Despite installing this game to a new M.2 drive it seems the community folder is still on the C drive and I've been downloading scenery etc to it, it is now quite full so I decided to make some space by deleting FSX and flyinside. I was very careful to only uninstall those files and now FS2020 won't start.

The error it comes up with is "please insert the disk to continue". With two options either continue or quit. Now how can microsoft have missed something so simple like how the hell can you insert a disk if you got the game via a download? Why would it put such a crazy stupid obstacle in the way of playing the game.

How the hell do you get your money back for something as poor as this, microsoft should be ashamed of themselves.

A lot of info gets written to AppData in your C:\Users\username folder. You can move/copy your AppData to a bigger drive and use a link to fool windows.

Its not even the size of the drive thats the problem, if you have a playstation or even an X box you just shove a game in and it just works, anything to do with microsoft and you have to become a PC genius just to get even the basics going, who wants to spend half their life googling problem after problem just to do a simple task, even the windows 10 PC's are constantly doing some update or other and taking your valuable time up, its so frustrating.

I've followed a guide on how to uninstall and reinstall it but when you go to the microsoft store the game is supposed to show up in your library and you click install but there is nothing in the library, it just says to add some games yet when I click on the purchased tab it shows there as a paid game but no option to install it.

The game has now vanished into the ether, I've paid £60 for absolutely nothing, just a few electrons that have now disappeared up gates' arse.

Careful you are only allowed to say how great the game is on this thread ! If I had known that at the time I wouldn’t have started it biggrin
