Advice on sim racing gear

Thanks Rich. I have just been watching Dan "Teslas" video guide of the process. Seems good and relatively straight forward, now to the difficult bit of getting to the time to do it.

I've been using the TaxionGG track guides which are pretty comprehensive for learning a track. On a conventional length circuit I always seemed to be about 3-4 seconds behind the aliens on AC, which should meet the 107% rule if the skills translate...
3-4 seconds off alien will see you into Iron in no time.
One word of 'warning', they use quite a lot of changeable weather conditions in LFM. You can see what it will be before you sign up for the race which is handy. So it's good to have a few setups at different track temps (including night and wet!) for the car you drive. You also have to pick one car and stick with it for the season I think.
I recently went from nearly selling everything (Fanatec GT DD Pro, V3 Clubsport pedals, Formula V2.5x wheel, McLaren GT3 wheel, Trackracer TR80 cockpit and Samsung Odessey G9 monitor) to getting it all outa the garage and set back up again.
I only bought the stuff in December 2021/January 2021 but after a very hot summer I parked it all in the garage with little to no motivation to get it back out. However, a few Youtube videos got me right back into it and at the start of the month I got everything set back up.
Finished up in June last year as a 1.9k iRated driver and now managed to climb to 2.4k iRating (Though I feel I'm really a 2.0k but have had a really good last 2 weeks to get me up to 2.4k). Did a week of the MX5s and now in the GT3s on the IMSA races. Its class to be back on it.

Last night I spent running around Monza on ACC farming out safety rating as to that point I had played less than 50 minutes total on ACC.
The whole thing is fairly frustrating to get through, but it is nearly done now. I imagine for someone new to sim racing its probably sensible, but you basically end up cruising around at 6 tenths to get the various ratings you need. If you go faster, you risk a tiny understeer/oversteer blanking that lap. Then you have to sit close to the AI to get the relative trust rating rather than just overtake. I think I finished on about 78 SR before I had to call it a night. Once thats done and it'll be like resetting to go back to 9 tenths to get to within 107%. Cest la via. I am enjoying the feel of the car and feedback.

I found it very slow going trying to grind SA in single player to get to LFM level, had read that they nerfed the SA gains you get playing against AI. Not sure how true that was but seemed that way, any tiny incidents resulted in massive SA loss and I was going backwards at one point despite driving around like Mrs Daisy.
I got way bigger SA increases from playing in multiplayer lobbies, even with a few incidents. M2s were really good for it as you could easily spend the whole race in very close proximity to a lot of other cars. Didn't take many of those to get up to 80.

Well I scraped through the licence on my second batch of 7 laps, literally just meeting the 107% rule I think.
I did about 50-75 laps beforehand and I only just made the grade by the skin of my teeth. Safe to say, I have a lot to improve! I couldn't keep the front tyres in the window so I was getting progressively slower as I overheated them.
Steep learning curve for sure, but fun, and I haven't even done a race so far. Ha.

Is the license track still Hungaroring? It's an odd little track that has a lot of technical corners, took me a while to get it as well. I don't know what your setup skills are like, but running the aggressive preset and getting your tire pressures right should be enough for you to be on pace. Once you know your tire pressures are in the optimum window for the track temp then you should be good. If you're overheating your tires then you're either running wrong pressures, or over driving the car.
Yes it's Hungaroring, which is quite intense through the whole lap and I've never driven it before. I watched the licence track guide which was a help.
I'm pretty sure I was overdriving it out of desperation but I need to adjust the setting to get it more on the nose really and some more clicks rear on the BB.
Felt like I was scrubbing the front on corner entry and mid corner.

Just found this thread!
Had a semi budget set up over covid and then kinda didn't use it so much.
Picked it up again over Xmas and upgraded to a proper rig and Fanatec DD1 setup
Then just this week got these VRS pedals, absolute works of art tbh, the brake rocker design is genius causing the pedal to become progressively firmer and feels very much like a hydraulic pedal. So far taken about half a second off laptimes - I stick to iRacing - hover around a 3k iRating now and focus on the GT4s, such fun cars especially the AMG!
Trail braking is so much smoother in the most crucial phase of coming off the brake. Interestingly, I did a trackday yesterday and this seems to have translated across into real life with getting a new PB despite my left rear damper losing all it's fluid!

I've had VRS pedals for almost 2 years, they are honestly the best pedals you can buy right now including the Hydraulic ones (I have a set of Hydraulics up in my loft ), if you're looking for an even firmer pedal which gives you a bit more feel, get a yellow spring off ebay for about £15 and you're golden. I was very tempted by the Simagic hydraulic pedals but got put off by some reports of leaks given they use real (toxic) brake fluid.
Just ordered these for the VRS', I have the haptic feedback seat cushion and it makes such a huge difference tbh.

What haptic feedback seat cushion do you have? I found the next level one and it looks promising.
I have messed about with some haptic feedback. Installed a pair of thumpers but the effect was a bit weedy and painful to configure. I was concerned a single Buttkicker would be limited in what it could simulate and that multiple effects would get mushed up. The latest ones are also really expensive and quite noisy apparently, as I often drive late at nigh when everyone else is in bed this is important.

Really is excellent and game changing for immersion, feels wrong without it now. Not very loud and there's no bass that travels away from the rig if that makes sense. Comes with their own software so you can fine tune exactly what effects you want and how strong, feeling the little thump of the gear changes is great along with road rumble, engine, abs, suspension etc
- if cost is a concern you can apparently build your own version for cheap and there are guides out there I think.
Rebuild 3.0 now fully in progress:
My GRID 5 inch DDU finding a new home in my PC build in Hamilton helmet colours.
[url]
Porsche button box moved to left and two GRID DDU 10's added. (my very good friend owns the company so when two custom colours land on your doorstep, rude not to use them)

Going to pull out all of the existing wiring and most likely remove the Logitech z906 speaker system. I have a spare AVR and speakers sat doing nothing so would prefer to use those speakers that can offer a little more depth of sound.

Velazquez Engineering made a lovely Tilton based set which I would have loved to buy just to look at, but I think he's stopped making them now.
Those Sim3D rumble motors are really good, but be prepared to wait a bit.

Is that the Grid Pcup dashboard? I'm curious if it plays well with simhub and more "traditional" dash layouts? My GRID 5 inch DDU finding a new home in my PC build in Hamilton helmet colours.

Yes mate it is. And yes works fabulous with simhub. Grid has a discourd that has people that have spent hours doing the hard work for people like us, so all the dash options are pretty much plug and play.https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cl78Ux7jY-k/?utm_so...
