At least most of the check points are fairly small so when you get killed it's not so annoying.
I really miss the ability to save at will. That going out of fashion killed FPS games for me. snuffy said:

I really miss the ability to save at will. That going out of fashion killed FPS games for me. So I've managed to put a fair few hours into this and, like everyone else posting here, i was pretty amazed and unimpressed with how steep the learning curve was. I first got into a big fight early in the game on Friday night having drunk most of a bottle of wine. I just couldn't do it so switched off and thought i'd give it another go on Saturday when I was thinking more clearly. It was still a tough fight but i got it done. From there, it's just got more and more enjoyable. I should add I've only been playing on 'normal' difficulty. I've now made it to the start of the 5th mission and i would say the things I've learned along the way, should they be helpful to anyone, are:
1. Move, keep moving, then move some more. If you're stood still you'll be shredded in seconds. Conversely, the projectiles fired by enemies tend to be slow moving so can be dodged easily. For all the big fights, the area you're in tends to have jump pads, bars to vault across and so on. Use them a lot! I didn't used to bother and it was a mistake.
2. A lot is said amount a lack of ammo and it's a problem I've had plenty of. But for the most part it's just my own poor use of the chainsaw to create ammo drops. Either I've failed to use it altogether, used it too soon, or I've taken the approach of killing off all the smaller minions, leaving just the main ones. I then run out of ammo and have nothing left to chainsaw to create more. So leave a few week minions around. Same goes for health. If you play your cards right there's actually a generous amount of health available. It's just having the right minions around when you need them.
3. Use all of your abilities. Not so much help in the early game, but as it progress you unlock quite a few. I'm hopeless at remembering to use anything other than my main gun, but on the occasions that i do the results are always a lot better.
4. One of the most useful upgrades I've found is a suit upgrade that lets you start a glory kill from much further away. Very handy as there's nothing more annoying than finally getting something stunned and not being able to easily finish it off with a glory kill.
5. If you find yourself stuck with no idea where to go, look for a grapple wall!
Overall i think it's an excellent game. A tough challenge with a good blend of massive fights and some tricky platforming at times. Exploring is often rewarded with secrets. Good atmospherics. Hell, i'm off to play some more...

I've actually been playing more of Doom 64 - it's such a great game full of atmosphere, and after over 20 years it's finally getting the appreciation it deserves. Admittedly though some of the puzzles do fall into the "guess what I'm thinking" category.
Also let my 6 year old nephew play the original at the weekend and he loved it. Did play with cheats on, as he can't really multi-task with the controls, but he still had a lot of fun nonetheless.

Been playing level 6 this morning and finally went through one of those Slayer Gates that has a super hard challenge on the other side (chickened out the first time). Yep, was one serious rumble alright. Bumped into two new kinds of big demons I hadn't faced before so didn't really know the best strategy to take them down. Miraculously, i managed it first try and got three weapon upgrade points for my trouble along side a key, one of 6 you need no unlock something or other. Having won that fight, i'm pretty confident going forwards that I'm getting a feel for it. You need to be constantly thinking 'do i need to chainsaw for ammo? Do I need to glory kill for health? Should i flamethower for shields? Are my grenades available? Is my blood punch charged'. Loads to think about and loads of fun

Here we go Hardware Unboxed has done a huge Doom Eternal graphics card test. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AByMt76hjFMYour 1080ti averages are:
1080 - 177fps
1440 - 130fps
4k - 78fps
I have a 2060 super (oc'd too) but don't have a 4k monitor but might try DRS at 4k and see if it works. Ave frame rate for mine at 4k is 61 and I have a 60hz monitor so Vsync will be fine.

Is anyone else starting to find the platform sections a bit annoying? Sometimes the prompt to grab appears so briefly you'll miss it, and at other times for whatever reason the double jump just doesn't work.
Yeah kind of wish they were reward based that you could optionally skip. I just want to shoot stuff!I have to confess I’m a little out of practice from 1st person shooters but I’m finding it quite hard on “hurt me plenty”. I also find it hard in the heat of battle to remember all the extras, which are needed when running low on ammo and life.
It’s been really well optimized, got it running at 4k ultra nightmare on my 4770k 1080ti which is great. I also like the quick loading times, the previous Doom seemed to take a lifetime to load, ended up buying an SSD to put it on, didn’t make much difference.
The game seems to be quite big (from what I can tell) which is nice, so many now are short and then push you online.
I’m not so keen on all the running and jumping swinging stuff, feel like I’m playing Tomb Raider or something.
