Managed to put some more time into the game now. I can definitely agree with the general feeling that combat is overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it and more key items it's extremely fun. Even on normal difficulty you'll get shredded in seconds if you don't pay attention, and the whole tide of battle can turn incredibly quickly.
Except for the Marauders. Fighting 1v1 was bad enough, but had to turn the difficulty down for the fight after you get your sword back and one shows up with multiple high tier enemies. Only point so far where the game just felt flat out unfair.

I finally completed it a few days back, having played the whole thing on 'normal'. As has been mentioned above, the Marauders were the biggest PITA and i never found fighting them fun as such, they were just a slog. On the other hand, i don't remember having any problems with Cyberdemons. I thought they would be the toughest to kill.
A couple of the boss fights were the hardest bits for me. The Gladiator was nails, with a lot of attacks that felt impossible to dodge. Fighting that was the first time i was offered the super armour to make life easier. I never took it and had a lot of deaths as a result! But i remember the fight feeling a bit broken too; it has the 'fire when the eyes flash green' mechanic, but whereas with Marauders I was able to get the timing right maybe 80-90% of the time, with the Gladiator it almost never worked.
First prize for toughest part of the game has to go to the fight with the Kahn Makr though. It took me well over an hour of constantly trying to get that done.
Great game

Marauders spoil the game for me. Was loving it up until that point.
They're like a terrible scene in a movie that ruins the cadence of the film, which should have been cut.
I've almost finished it but haven't played it for days as I've started to resent how the game progressively narrows down your options for killing the bad guys... feels very repetitive now.
Whoever did the optimisation though deserves a medal. It runs superbly.

Are they the super fast ones with the red shield? I found them so difficult! I finished the main campaign on Sunday and it's now boxed up to send back to CEX whilst they are still offering good trade in value (£40)They're like a terrible scene in a movie that ruins the cadence of the film, which should have been cut.

I quite enjoyed the platforming sections in the game as it broke the action up a bit

Yup... Utter PITA. I quite enjoyed the platforming sections in the game as it broke the action up a bit
I'm loving it - a proper, dirty, rocket jumps all the way to school uphill both ways FPS. The weapons all have proper weight to them, the soundtrack is great and the gameplay is spot on. One slight criticism would be that the story isn't to the level of something like Gears or Halo, almost feels like they didn't need to bother, but its Doom. Demons = bad, kill them lots would have worked.
Been playing through on Hurt Me Plenty - the learning curve was steep, but now that I have the hang of it, doesn't feel that hard - once I switched from modern FPS tactics of thinking about positioning/camping, preserving ammo etc. it became a lot easier. It reminds me of old Quake/Unreal games - stand still at all and chances are you will be killed - the only time I seem to need to slow down at all is when trying to stagger the weaker enemies for a glory kill as opposed to just killing them, which is annoying as when your health is low, slowing down is the last thing to do. Often means I'll save the blood punch for emergencies.
I actually like the fact the game punishes your mistakes - health is very easy to both gain and lose and you can never amass enough health, ammo and armor to become a walking tank - none of the difficulty feels particularly "unfair" - if you make a mistake, its on you - this feels especially true in the slayer gates - its very easy to get most of the way through and then get complacent because there are only one or two big demons left to deal with and just trying to gun them down in a fight you won't win.
Not many of the fights feel like there is a pattern or key to beating them other than "be better at playing doom" - jumping about like a loon, keeping track of your specials and health/ammo is the key to everything. Will be an interesting one for the speedrunners to get hold of - the jumping dynamics and things like the super shotgun are begging for someone to be scooting through the game at epilepsy inducing speeds.

Completed the game now, my overall feeling is that it is a good game, but not the masterpiece a lot of people are saying. On the plus side (minor spoilers):
- looks utterly gorgeous, ran perfectly on my One X
- great soundtrack
- combat is fast, smooth and frantic. Once you get the hang of it it becomes very enjoyable and when you die it feels like you fault (with a few caveats).
- campaign feels like the right length, not too short and not padded either.
- more smaller encounters means it feels less like moving from one arena to another, as Doom 2016 fell into.
But on the downside
- platform sections are often more aggravating than challenging.
- a bit too cartoony in some aspects, I get they want to make DoomSlayer a badass, but when you hear him talk it's comical, and the female scientist sounds like she's having an orgasm when talking about how great he is.
- Marauders. fk them and the demon horse they rode in on. Having an enemy where you have to keep a certain distance from and counter attack with a very slim window goes completely against the design of the combat. On their own it's ok, but when they put them with multiple other high tier enemies it's flat out unfair. I ended up turning the difficulty down every time one appeared, as I just couldn't be bothered going through a dozen deaths just to beat them.
- ending is a proper "oh, is that it?" moment.
7.5/10 for me.

I've been stuck on one bit for nearly 2 weeks. Nearly at the end of Exultia, jumping to circular platforms that disappear beneath you, then onto the 'stick' that comes out of the rock.
This bit: https://youtu.be/3O5dPSzmzkw?t=3051
I can make it onto the first 'stick' but despite trying AT LEAST 100 times, I can't make it on to the next stick. Tried all sorts of combinations, no joy.
Any tips? Do i need to have collected something earlier that makes me jump further/higher?
