Point of order..

Typically, when you overtake the person in 2nd place, that puts you in 2nd place, not 1st place smile

Oops. Yes. Well, maybe. Do the rules still apply when you overtake from above in a car race? biggrin

Pretty sure I've read you cannot permanently fix an older PS3 with the heating issue. Seriously, go to CEX and get a slim for £40. Then you can at least get stuck in to your games!

Thank you sparks_190e,

That's probably a very good idea. I only paid £25 for my phatty but I really think he sold me a toaster.

I can't find a slim on CEX for anything like £40 but there are loads on eBay. By the time I've broken the processors,
arsed about with pricey thermal compounds and spend ages on the thing, it'd probably work out cheaper.

So, is there a particular CECH number that's better than the others and should I be seeking a partcular HD size?

Hmm. Any market for used phatty innards?

Cheapest one (in store) is £52. I know, because I was there yesterday. Around a fiver cheaper at Trade Me In.

Hard Drive size doesn’t really matter that much, will be plenty enough. Could never fill mine, even when stored music on it.

OK gents, Approaching buying mode now. I've decided on a PS3 Slim
and it'll come from eBay. I have a few Qs as follows...

Phats are plagued by overheating. What about Slims?

Do Slims have the self-actuating 'VOID' sticker?

Anything else that bothers Slims?

Are there any dead giveaway questions to ask eBay sellers?

Is it worth biting the bullet and getting a Super Slim?

Thank you, I hope your answers will prevent my buying another pup.

Go into your local cexshop (yes, I went there) and see what they have. You'll have a 1 yr guarantee or whatever. Get the most expensive slim you dare. After faffing about with my fat PS3 for a bit, I gave up and picked up a £70 slim with 320Gb because a 160Gb one was £50 at the time. #manmaths.

Thanks Hoofy,

I can do man maths too! I mean, as I've invested in a good wheel, it's silly
to waste it with a duff console. In other words, the wheel deserves a good PS3.

There you are, a prime example of man logic 1 It's a gift.

Your electronic skills are superior to mine. I gave up after taking the bolts off to check for dust. Didn't do any of the paste etc as I wasn't sure I could figure out how to put it all back.

For the first time in years, I've bought a wheel for our Xbox One. Logitech G920, and it's superb. A spare seat from a Passat on some braked castors and an IKEA coffee table and job done, Dirt Rally 2 and Project Cars are my go-to.

Electronic skills? don't make me larf laugh

All I did was do draw a little diagram of eact step on cardboard and punch holes in it then
transfer each screw as it came out.
Then it was just a matter of taking lots of mobile phone photos at each stage then display them
in backwards order to see how the bits should look at each stage in reassembly.
And a hint: keep touching something earthed to klill the static in your body.
I used the tower metal of a PC (plugged in) but one of the holding screws on a light switch or mains
socket will do.

Good plan! Here's my plan.

My phat PS3kind of works in that it'll usually run Dirt (only one overheat crash so far but it won't steer
properly with the GT wheel). But it randomly over heats/crashes even just sitting. every tieme I try to
install or run GT5, it crashes again.

Redoing the thermal paste was obviously a failure and I don't intend to try delidding on the basis of cost
and inevitable breakage of the processors.

On advice from this thread, I checked out CEX. From there, I can get a Super Slim, in good shape, delivered for free and with a 2-year
repair/replace warranty. Given I assume they test the merchandise that seems worth the £75 asking price for an unboxed example.

That's a lot of arsing about to essentially get to the same point I did. I love being lazy. biggrin

Here's a new question for all you gamey types...
Following recommendations on here, I bit the bullet.
I started by going to Cex and sending them my ailing PS3 Phat
to them and to my amazement, they bought it!

I then chose very carefully and when my trade-in voucher showed up,
I put it against an unboxed PS3 Super Slim. This duly appeared
and after a little bit of work with my MIG welder, I'd fashioned
a stand for my wheel from an old, chrome towel rail.

Last night, then, involved a massive update for the PS3 and the loading of GT5
and its own update. Before long, I was driving a Mazda Eunos, around the 'high speed
ring' and coming 16th of 16 starters. I also discovered that the big dead spot in the steering
goes away when I go at racing speeds.

Tonight, I found Arcade Mode so I've been hammering round in a Twin Turbo Audi TT, a 427 Cobra
and a Mustang GT coupe. It's great fun.

Here's the question. The eject button that I understand is supposed to unlatch the sliding door to allow access
to the disc seems not to be owrking. I can start the door moving manually, then it slides open. However, pressing
the eject button does nothing. Should it unlatch the door? If it should, I'll probably send this unit
back for a repair or replacement.

Please enlighten me, gentlemen.

Surprised they accepted the fat one. Did they not test it??

Glad you're finally able to enjoy it.

Dunno about the Super Slim. I only have the Slim as the sliding door looked a bit crap to me. biggrin

If you can work around it I would leave it, or if it bothers you it will have a warranty.

Bit late but i had a ps3 slim that i took to work for a gran turismo time trial competition. It ended up staying for a number of years and was normally left turned on and running for months at a time, with zero issues. (A logitech G25 was hooked up with it and apart from the pedals steering to spike, the wheel base has been super reliable too - i wouldn't trust my thrustmaster T300RS to have endured the same abuse)

I'd heard about the overheating problems on the phat, and the super slim looked a bit fragile to me plus they seem to be very low memory, so now we're in lockdown (and my ps3 is still stuck at what is now my ex-work), i bought another slim. I went with the 320GB as i figured it might retain a bit more value when i come to sell it again.

Thank you folks,

My old PHAT was certainly queued for testing for a few days but the voucher came though so it must've been tested.
That said, the overheating crashes were few and far between but definitely associated with trying to load or run GT5.
\still, \i received £7 more than I paid for the wrong 'un so I'm happy.

Re. the disc door, as it's sprung, I expect the eject button is to operate a locking solenoid or it just be a mechanical
lock? It doesn't bother me much but I wonder if opening the door from locked will eventually knacker the door and/or
whatever locks it. In any event, the warranty's two years.

Now I've got going, I've bought a few games from eBay. En route are...

Formula 1 Championship Edition
Racedriver Grid

and I'm chasing...

Ferrari Challenge
Need for Speed - Shift

..and for a change,

Aliens: Colonial Marines

All my games will be like their owner, old and cheap!

Try Battlefield 4. Expect to be killed a lot while you figure it out, though.
