Tried to grab some of this on Steam last night but doesn't seem to be working? There is a button for "play for free" on the relevant modules but when you press it it just launches the game with existing content, doesn't seem to download the new goodies. Also not seeing the discounts on many modules that were suggested in the blurb...

The Steam download stuff has never worked as well as the direct download.

Nice to see it's free, but now look what a €12K VR headset can do for it. https://varjo.com/blog/blend-real-and-virtual-seam... Doesn't show the resolution though which is the real selling point.

When you click 'Play for free' it boots into the game and starts downloading the new content in the background. I agree, the way it is implemented makes no sense, but it does work (eventually). It seems that only aircraft in which Eagle Dynamics were the developer are available for free trial.

The Tomcat is worth every penny of the £62 at full price I reckon. It really is very well done.

It was painfully slow last night but picked up the F5 and had an hour with it. Great old school seat of the pants stuff... No messing about with CCIP etc just stick the pipper where you want it and pickle ! I will probably buy it.

I think the servers are slow as everyone grabs everything! Who can blame them smile
The F5 is a nice plane, with lots of weapons options.

Does anyone yearn for the dynamic campaigns of old ? Tornado, Janes, Falcon etc.

Yes, used to like proper dynamic campaigns where you could influence the outcome of the war but if you failed a mission it didn't result in 'game over'. DI's Tornado, TFX, EF2000, Combat Air Patrol, Fleet Defender were my staples, particularly as the last two both had F14s.

There was a flight sim licensed from the (excellent) Flight of the Intruder book back in the 90s where you had the choice of F4 or A6 Intruder to fly missions over 'Nam in. I used to take my Amiga over to a mate's for the weekend and serial link two computers to fly 1v1 air combat or 2-ship formation bombing missions in between beer and curry.

I bought the F5 (and F86) for some old-school blatting about without a HUD in DCS. Nevada range in the recent sale too, so I'm having great fun with cannon strafing runs on parked airliners at McCarran airport in Vegas.

biggrin Yeah I purchased the F86 a few weeks ago and love it. I also have the A10 but its that bloody complicated .... I remember calling the local games shop up every day for about 2 weeks asking if flight of the Intruder had been released !

If DCS released a proper stand alone dynamic campaign and charged £60 per aircraft with the campaign I would buy them.

Falcon 4.0, with the added free BMS mod from elsewhere,is available on Steam, quite cheaply IIRC,and the mod brings it visually up to date (ISH) with a good dynamic campaign, but sadly no VR

Ah the good old days, I enjoyed Flight of the Intruder, Combat Air Patrol (despite insane AI) and others too. Also some of the Microprose games, especially Gunship and Gunship 2000.

I saw a video from some notable Australian DCS vlogger (forget his name) recently on the roadmap for DCS, apparently they are working on dynamic campaign. There's a new map coming too, for free - it's almost entirely water though, for playing with the new Supercarrier module, based around the Marianas islands.

F4BMS is incredibly in depth but nowhere near as accessible as DCS unfortunately. I keep picking it up and realising how little I know and that I just haven't got the time I'd really like to get into it properly.

We downloaded it when we spotted it was free.

We want to use it on our new Valve Index setup,in VR.

It starts up and we are in the hangar, but can’t seem to do anything past that point.

Do we need to create a login and I’d first to start playing.

Apologies for the dumb question, but I must be missing something obvious!

No login required but you'll need to click the X to close the login window to access the menu behind it to start flying. Have fun.

MagsTV?
Also a good YouTuber for DCS is Laobi, very funny but VERY NSFW
Looking for good info on DCS on YT can take a while to get past the Grim "Lets make five 10 minute video guides on how to flick one switch every day" Reapers spam (can be useful but boy is there a lot of it!smile)

That's the fella. I find the GR stuff pretty good mostly, some of the daft stuff they do isn't much cop but I've learned more about the F/A-18 through their vids than the game's own training content probably.

I found my old Lock On: Modern Air Combat disc the other day, I might stick that back on the PC and see how much things have changed since that evolved into DCS. The PC I had when I got that game was woefully underpowered for LOMAC, I might actually be able to run it properly now smile

Speaking of the Grim reapers, apparently if you use the promo code GRIMREAPERS, there is an extra 10% off the already half price stuff(NOT Steam stuff though) according to their latest(so far) YT vid.

I am so so sorry smile
I apologise now to your free time and your wallet smile
For assistance,as mentioned above, plenty of YT videos to help: the aforementioned Grim Reapers, MagsTV, Redkite, and Laobi are my favourites. Chuck's guides on www.mudspike.com are universally well regarded. r/hoggitt is the best sub Reddit
