£449 is very punchy for the Xbox I feel. Surely Sony have to match it?

The lesser powerful (non 4x) Xbox is only £249 in the uk!

The £249 for the digital only Xbox is really good value, I'm surprised it's that cheap.

Not necessarily ... Perhaps it's just me but (as a PS3 and PS4 owner) I feel that Sony have regressed back to the mentality that they had when bringing out the PS3 intially. ie. They have a huge lead from the previous generation and that their player base will follow them no matter how much it costs and how much support they drop for older games and peripherals.

Personally, I'm leaning heavily towards getting a Series S on the 24 month deal. Compact unit I can tuck out of the way (keeping my PS4 Pro in place), hardly anything to pay up front, a big library of games from day one and also can access a big library on the PC side too. Pretty fantastic value.

Don’t have confirmed that stuff like flight sticks and wheel and pedal set ups that work on PS4 will be supported on PS5. Its only the controllers that aren’t.

Backwards compatibility for games is PS4 only, but there’s lots of older titles on PS Now I believe.

I’m committed to PS5 as an avid Gran Turismo but finding the whole next gen launch interesting. The MS pricing strategy is very aggressive.

If Sony are sensible they’ll announce a price close to or equal to the XBox price. Well, unless they’ve somehow managed to produce it very cheaply and can undercut them.

I’d think there would have been a few hurried meetings after the XBox price announcement to confirm pricing strategy, particularly if they were expecting to be significantly more expensive.

One of the big reasons the Playstation brand even took off in the first place was they waited for Sega to announce the pricing of their Saturn, then immediately undercut it. I'm old enough to remember people mocking the fact that a company who made hi-fis thought they were going to cut it in the console industry, especially using cds which had long load times. Hopefully they haven't forgotten that.

As it stands right now the Xbox looks like the better deal, but there's no new games I want to play on it.

I think the PS1 succeeded because it was just so far ahead of anything seen before. I remember being unable to believe that something so powerful could exist back when I first saw it - it was a bit like having a high end Silicon Graphics workstation in a box, in your living room. The Saturn was already pretty much a flop - extremely expensive and delayed with a small library of software on account of the 'difficult to program for' architecture (something that would hurt the PS3 too).

And speaking as someone with a huge backlog of games on PS4, PC (and even PS3) I'm beyond wanting to buy a console to get a specific game ... I just have too many purchased games yet to play. I'll be putting money into beefing up my PC with a new-gen graphics card and buying future games primarily on that platform, after they've been out for a while and get discounted. But a small, discreet, powerful console that doesn't require faffing about as much and comes with a ready made library (along with a corresponding library for PC also) at an almost negligible monthly price - probably less than many people pay for a mobile contract - is something I could well buy into.

I think that the explosion in the popularity of videogames has lead to a situation whereby games have been commoditised. I don't think I'm the only one with a large library of unplayed games who doesn't have the compulsion to always rush out to get the latest, greatest. Maybe Sony can reignite that, we'll see how they do.

Just been reading the Xbox thread about the phone style payment model

£28 a month for an X, XBLive Gold and Ultimate Game Pass

Slightly more expensive than buying separate but all the parents who were looking at £500 before Xmas will probably go for that model, they may have smashed this unless PS do similar

I'm hearing November 20th for the PS5, so 10 days after the Xbox.

My guess is it will be more expensive but it will come bundled with free ps online and game subscription for a year or 6 months.

It's an effectivevway to get your user base hooked on a service that provides a constant revenue stream. From the consumer perspective... The parent doesn't have to buy several games before and after Christmas too.

That's what I'd do.

Well I will be amazed it is not November to get the Christmas purchase.

And if it is £500 with a year free on the PSN I will buy one without hesitation.

A mistake I learned many moons ago with something unrelated.

Never, ever buy the first version, it is usually bug ridden with appalling support and the games are usually just pimped out previous version games.

You are paying because you want one, not because you need one, Apple make billions a year selling like this.

Wait a year or so, it will be cheaper, sorted, and with better support and games backing.

But, hey, it's all about you, it's your life, your way, isn't that what advertisers keep telling you? So line the pocket of one of the richest companies in the world making you pay to play games online lol!

Obviously it’s not said in the right way but to be fair to him Microsoft has form.

Three dead PS3 fats over here frown

Definitely worth getting in towards the end of a generation, after all the known faults have come out of the woodwork. I got a PS4 Pro a few months ago for £292 with eight new games! Not to mention all the big titles that were fifty quid at launch have been reissued for fifteen. biggrin
