Was thinking about this a bit recently. As someone who's switched between Nintendo, Sony and MS for console choice - currently have a Switch Lite and an X1 - I'm thinking about investing my £500 in to a PC to run some games. I don't need some mega resolution 8k set-up, but I feel I miss out on stuff that's on PC, or only possible on PC - ie, wreckfest mods - over console.
Having ordered a £1500 gaming PC recently (then cancelled it because I realised I honestly didn’t need it) I think you’ll be very disappointed in what £500 might get you in terms of a gaming PC. £500 won’t play anything near PS5 or X1X levels of games. The graphics card alone in the one I was buying GTX 2070 Super was something like £500 on its own. And it wasn’t anywhere near the top of the tree.
A 2070 Super is overkill if all he wants to do is tinker with mods on games that aren't that demanding.
Of course you can get a £500 PC to play minesweeper if you want but it’s hardly relevant to a discussion about alternatives to the PS5 is it?
£600 for something that should last 6-7 years is nothing nowadays.
Someone posted earlier about a special 825GB drive. Exciting, except that once the OS is on, you'll probably get 500GB of that to use, which is not enough.
Looking forward to tonight's event, I only hope it shows something tangible, rather than non-gameplay trailers.
I'm not really bothered about comparing tit for tat with Xbox. Three generations in, it's obvious the numbers don't mean much, the experience is broadly similar, save for exclusives.

If what they are after is the ability to run some mods on games, then it is doable with a budget PC setup is all I'm saying.
And by budget setup I mean a Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB 3200MHz DDR4, 240GB SSD, RX 580, etc.
That setup will still be able to run games that come out in the next year or two at 1080p medium/high settings I would have thought.

Will probably need to budget about £1k plus for a new 4k telly with hdmi 2.1 also to take into account if you want to use the max features of next gen graphically etc.
Hopefully see tonight how good ps5 when everything is confirmed in the launch at 9
Not so sure - if your the sort of person who goes out and buys launch games consoles you’d certainly have a 4K TV OLED. Hopefully see tonight how good ps5 when everything is confirmed in the launch at 9
You buy a OLDD 4K tv that will last 10 years as the main TV or even if only for 5 years can move to the second room and upgrade again. As in a constant churn of TVs.

You do say some daft things.I had an xbox, 360, 1 (years after launch) and now have a PS4. I don't have a strong preference any more, although I think the PS4 controller is rubbish compared to any xbox controller I have had.
I doubt I will rush in to by a PS5 or xbox - like someone else said once there is a well of titles available they become better value.

Passive aggressive much What I was trying to get across is that the poster specifically said they weren't after pushing the limits of an "8k setup". I read into that as their preference for their next purchase is to have the ability to customize their games rather than the raw graphical grunt that the PS5 is likely to provide.

Yes, my opinion possibly wasn't best shared on a specific PS5 thread. I've never put graphics on a high priority, wanting the latest and greatest. I think it's more the realisation that I feel quite restricted with modern consoles compared to PC - and my enjoyment would be increased greater by having more flexibility to modding, etc. Things I've played more recently are wreckfest, snowrunner, nascar 4, farming sim. Nothing graphically ground breaking, but the PC side is just opened up massively.
This is PH, home of man maths. I'm sure my £500 imaginary budget isn't completely set in stone, but - if I am going to spend £500 to play new games (albeit games I want to play, not necc 8k graphically demanding games) it probably won't be in a new console.
To which point, I'll go start my own thread about 'cheap' gaming PCs. (y)

Are there any ‘killer’ titles for the PS5 announced?
In theory I want the PS5 but I also want the next gen Halo to be honest which means going for the Xbox....
Unless you've already got a half decent PC? Think the next one is coming to PC at launch too.In theory I want the PS5 but I also want the next gen Halo to be honest which means going for the Xbox....

This allows you to take full capability of its features like low latency mode and variable refresh rate etc
How much difference it will make compared to normal 4k I don't know, but for future proofing or to get max capabilities out of next gen consoles if you need it then It's something to keep in mind, in case anyone is looking at upgrading their TVs as well.

Not really. You have a proportion of people who always buy latest tech as soon as it’s out always have done always will. I had an xbox, 360, 1 (years after launch) and now have a PS4. Personally the one thing I’m thoroughly fed up with is needing multiple gigabyte updates CONSTANTLY to just play the games.
Gonna sound like an old man but back in the day they had to make sure the game was finished when it shipped originally!
This is the crap I’m talking about. Today’s update (not my picture though)Gonna sound like an old man but back in the day they had to make sure the game was finished when it shipped originally!
I'll be waiting a few months before getting the new console as I always do. I've gone from PS1 to PS2 to Xbox 360 to Xbox One, so I'm not sure which way I'll go this time. I've always preferred the Xbox controller, but I think PS has better exclusives at the minute.
Looking forward to the launch at 9pm, hopefully the price and specs will become a lot clearer.
