Doom was actually 3D so instead of just having flat corridors you could have changes in height - it added a massive extra dimension (geddit?) as you could have outdoor maps, stairs, lifts and all that carry on. I've played both in the last 10 years and Wolfenstein gets a bit dull after a while but Doom really does have replayability of a brilliantly made game.
Wolf 3D has 3D graphics, but still played in 2D. Doom was the first game to have true 3D. One was built on the other which I'd call evolution rather than derivative. Doom was also the first FPS to have networked multiplayer. This was well and truly ahead of its time as we could never get networking working with Windows 3.11.

I know this is a motoring forum but I have never, ever enjoyed a driving game, boring rubber banding boring s**t.
If I had the room and internet connection to set up a pc and decent VR I’m pretty sure I’d change my mind but sadly I haven’t.

The Grand Theft Auto games are boring, just aimless walking/driving around.
Most games these days seem to be FPS. Where are the platform games like Donkey Kong and Super Mario (yes im old)?
There's still a lot of good 2D platformers around, I really like the Shantae games and the animation style is gorgeousMost games these days seem to be FPS. Where are the platform games like Donkey Kong and Super Mario (yes im old)?

There's loads on the Steam store, even some quality puzzle games like Huniepop that I definitely haven't played or got most of the achievements on.Most games these days seem to be FPS. Where are the platform games like Donkey Kong and Super Mario (yes im old)?

The age of the FPS has long since ended. Even a decade ago, the genre was in decline as the reach of COD cut down the competition. Interesting thread.
Nintendo in general. Never really rated them, nor their games and approach to things.
I was too young for the NES generation and had an A500 (my older brothers )when everyone had either a SNES, or a Mega Drive at school.
First console of my own was an original PlayStation and found myself more taken in by Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, Resident Evil. F1 97, FFVII-FFIX etc.
I tried to get into the N64, I hated the controller, the graphics/colour palette and didn’t really get Mario and all the other AAA titles.
I have a Switch and as much as I only use it when travelling I rate it highly and think it has that Nintendo genius that I’ve seemed to miss before. I throughly enjoyed Mario Odyssey too. If I mention to friends, or work colleagues about not liking Nintendo and especially not enjoying the N64 as a child they tell me about the golden days of gaming. Don’t get me wrong I played Golden Eye and Maro Kart around my friends house and we had a laugh, but I had played Half Life on the PC at the time. That and games like Duke Nukem 3D were much better to me.
On balance I have a soft spot for the Sega Saturn but it wasn’t a great console.

The Sega Saturn was mint, it had some great niche games, but it beggars belief that Sega developed it when they did. Security at Sony must have been top spec, as I assume the bosses at Sega let out a collective gasp when they realised how powerful the PS1 was going to be. That misstep put Sega out of stride with the competition. The Dreamcast was amazing when it came out but that was soon trumped by Sony and Microsoft and the rest is history. My dad bought a Saturn when it came out and we loved it. We got a Playstation a couple of years after but I remember my auntie coming round with her PS when they were near enough brand new - I think the only games out were Loaded, Wipeout and MK3. It was absolutely stunning, clearly light years ahead of the Saturn in every respect.
In terms of shelf quality, the Sega Saturn game boxes have never been bettered. Those slim black cases were so smart and the quality and fitting of the printed labels was amazing.
Nice to see FFIX getting a mention in your post too, it is the king of FF games.

I remember coming home with a brand new Sega Master System, the first game I had was Rocky.
The feeling of being totally underwhelmed and having buyers remorse hit me like a ton of bricks, it was such a huge disappointment.
And from there on Sega consistently made crap consoles, I never brought another Sega console again, despite thinking their Arcade games were amazing.

I have over 100 Saturn games (all jap) and I think it's a superb console. It's a 2d powerhouse and when programmed for properly can do 3d well too. I wasn't ever interested in the Saturn until I properly looked into its jap library and it was an eye opener as to what they got over there compared to us.
