Genuine question from an old bloke:
Why is there so much demand for the PS5, or indeed any launch consoles for that matter? Time and time again there is way more demand for a console than there is supply.
The PS4 and Xbox One have countless great games, people can't have played them all, or at least can't have played all of the ones that interest them... or can they? Is it actually the case that a gamer is likely to have played every game he or she wants to on a system, and only a new system will give them a new game?
Having said that, aren't games that come out on PS5 available on PS4 as well, albeit with marginally lesser graphical loveliness?

Because its the next big thing. Sony have been hyping it up (MS too) for about a year now and there was plenty of speculation before that.
A new console happens infrequently, so its made in to a big thing. Its a bit like the "gotta have the lastest phone thing" 5 or 6 years ago. the last one was fine, but people upgrade anyway.
There is always higher demand than supply when consoles come out, but its been made worse by catastrophic material shortages this time. The fact they're hard to get hold of just increases the "want" for some.
As far as games go - right now as I said a few posts ago there isn't much out exclusive to PS5 yet, but there are several titles due this year that will be.
Xbox is a bit different, all of their stuff will be on the older machine and also on PC.
At this point I'm wondering when a proper supply will return. IIRC Sony were aiming for 18m units be year end, at the moment it looks like they could be struggling to do half, maybe even a quarter of that ?

I suspect there’s a mixed message there .. 8 million by end of financial year 2020 (ie between release in November 2020 and March 2021); 18 million total by end calendar year December 2021.They sold 4.5million PS5’s in the October20-December20 quarter.
Right, so the 8m is out the window I would say.
18m is the figure i was referring to, if its total since launch I would guess they are under a third of that and I wouldn't fancy their chances of getting to half way, not unless there is a big turnaround in material availability.
Puts Sony in a tricky spot - if material prices rise they'll be losing even more on each unit - increasing price would be not well received.
On the other hand, they will want to get units out there and gain sales from games.
Speaking of which I bet they are pushing back the release of 1st party games.

It’s inevitable that component prices will rise. The blame for poor supply at the moment is pretty much at the door of TSMC and their inability to build enough gubbins to satisfy demand (or if you like, go a bit further back and blame Trump and his trade war forcing production from China to elsewhere). Of course, Sony will have a number of orders already in (who knows how many millions?) but when that order book runs out component prices will rise. Same as it will rise for AMD and Apple and Nintendo and whoever else. Memory prices are also going to go up. But there’s no way PS5 RRP is going up to compensate. Maybe PS5 Pro or PSVR2 might be a bit more expensive than anticipated, but the console is a loss-leader. The money is in peripherals, the digital platform and in-game spend, and thanks to PS4 that is all in place.

From my POV - I think the sooner you buy one the better the value proposition. Why is there so much demand for the PS5, or indeed any launch consoles for that matter? Time and time again there is way more demand for a console than there is supply.

Aren't you just going to have the same issue trying to get a Gfx card? Except instead of scalpers you're competing against ceypto miners
Sure, but my PC is more useful than a console giving not only potentially better gaming than the latest consoles but also being useful for work and hobbies. Not going to waste time chasing a PS5 at the same time as trying to get a decent new GPU for the PC, the PC gets priority for an upgrade. There's also a decent chance of a collapse in Etherium prices at some point, which is the main problem with GPUs at the moment. Bitcoin isn't the issue - these days you need a custom ASIC to be competitive. Etherium mining can unfortunately still be profitable on anything down to a 1060 card, it would seem.
I've got such a big backlog of games on my existing PS4 Pro that I'm sorted for console gaming for quite a while. A PS5 to load them faster and have more fps would be nice, but not essential.
Plus, being able to stream my PC games to my TV and play them as if they were on a console means I don't really need a whizz-bang console. I can already enjoy 'high end' PC gaming on my TV from my Steam library courtesy of Geforce Now (although many games are blocked from the service, unfortunately).
I spent the morning hammering F5 on very's website yesterday in anticipation of their drop (alleged to be circa 6k units)
They suddenly appeared at about 1315 and I managed to bag one of them, hitting the add to account button on the wifes account.
My elation quickly turned to disappointment when I got the confirmation email with an expected delivery date of march 11th!!!!!
3 weeks to go

So Argos released stock at 3am and John Lewis at 5:30am
Why are they trying to upset current or future customers in this way.
Alot of people on twitter are right that these times just suit resellers.
Tbh if I still needed one (got mine day one) I'd be joining the scammers sorry resellers and signing up to a discord group to get the sniping program.

They possibly do. But from the retailer’s point of view, maybe they don’t want their website dying from being battered during the normal shopping day? I dunno. To them it’s just one of thousands of products they sell. Why are they trying to upset current or future customers in this way.

That isn't really the worst news you could have got. Most of us are looking a LONG way down the road to getting a PS5 at retail price. Glad you lucked ou :-)They suddenly appeared at about 1315 and I managed to bag one of them, hitting the add to account button on the wifes account.

I had a PS5 delivered yesterday only for my son to say he's been after one since launch and couldn't get one so I gave him that, this morning I went on the game website and bought another which will be delivered next week so I'm assuming supply if pretty normal
Well, normal in that there are very few about : https://www.stockinformer.co.uk/checker-ps5-playst...You were lucky you just happened across the game site at the right time, supplies are coming in but the volumes appear very small and demand still huge.

So coming from a PC gamer where is the best (read cheapest) place to get titles?
I've not owned a PS since the PSone.
just look around the net - shopto.net, simplygames, 365games, amazon, wherever is cheapest. Game are probably the most expensive.I've not owned a PS since the PSone.
DO check the PSN store, sometimes they have sales on, but from what i see its typically cheaper to buy physical.
