Well... Looks like there's yet another module that I have to buy:

Not strictly related to DCS but is there a reason why the Thrustmaster warthog joystick and throttles have been reduced in price recently?

Currently £315 at Amazon and a few other places have discounted down from the usual £400/425 point.

There’s a new f16 throttle coming out by Thrustmaster but I’ve not heard anything about a new joystick. To be honest the Warthog set up is a bit old now and while I use and really like the throttle and stick the gimble just isn’t up to the standards of their competitors.
The Virpil warbrd is a wonderful thing.

Yes, the Virpil stuff is very well made, and now they have a UK website/distributor it is much more affordable without the heavy import duties. I have their CM2 stick base, collective and a couple of different grips. Much nicer feel than my venerable TM Warthog, but their config software is a bit of a PITA sometimes.

I would probably have gone for the Virpil kit but at the time it was much more expensive than the Warthog.

Still very happy with the TMW I think I paid around this price new from Amazon.

Also have the F18 stick which is great for the F15 and Harrier.

Yeah, not knocking the TM stuff, mine still gets regular use, but given the prices are a lot closer now, and you can use the TM grips with the Virpil bases and extensions, they are certainly worthy of consideration.

I had promised myself the new Viper TQS throttle on launch to replace my modded Cougar, but given there are more and more great modules (and more on the way), I'm considering moving away from the realistic replica kit and installing something more generic which I can use with any module, instead of swapping hardware each time I change aircraft.

"What, this old thing?" He brushes away imaginary dust as a new toy is retrieved from the back of a cupboard. Seems to work for dresses/shoes/jackets. hehe

Haha.

I know that feeling.

A real downside of interned shopping.

I hadn't realised they had a UK disti now - I'm in the market for a better throttle so I'll take a look at them, thanks.

I have a VKB joystick though and I love it - only joystick I've ever used that I didn't have to set curves or deadzones for in DCS, it just seems to work out of the box. They have some throttle options now too, worth looking at for anyone in the market for HOTAS gear.

All this talk of expensive kit and here's me slumming it with the X56 which everyone hates laugh. To be fair it's done me well across DCS and other flight games (it's brilliant for Elite dangerous).

Taken a bit of a dive back into DCS lately. Spending a bit of time actually learning the aircraft.

So far I can do most things in the Hornet (badly), Most things in the Tomcat apart from actual dogfighting (the compressor stall warning haunts my dreams), can reasonably use the A10C as long as there's no SAMs and can struggle the AH64 into the air for a while

Sometimes pop onto the 4YA PVE servers to have a go online. The Mod server is fun with the Typhoon mod, mostly just end up providing air cover while others do ground attack

I actually use an xBox controller for the majority of my flying, as I work away a lot and take my laptop with me. It is surprisingly effective. Expensive HOTAS setups are by no means essential.

I keep trying to get friends into DCS and they are usually put off by the controls needed. I've reasoned many times an Xbox controller with the FC3 aircraft can be just as fun as a full HOTAS setup. I used to use one when I had the TM HOTAS X for TDC slewing etc

Currently deliberating getting the Mudhen, just can't justify the price even with the sale.

Even the full-fidelity modules lend themselves well to a simple controller. With VR I can just look directly at the control and press a button mapped to the mouse click - which covers 90% of all the cockpit controls. You can also use modifiers (like a 'shift' key) which doubles or trebles the number of inputs you can map on a controller.

This is my map for the Viper, which covers pretty much everything needed to be fully combat effective in the game.

If self-escort all weather strike is your thing, the mudhen is awesome and now the TFR has been added it offers a unique experience in DCS. It is also one of the few two-seaters where you don't really need a back-seater, as almost everything can be done from the front. I've just scratched the surface with it, but it really is an excellent module.

The mudhen is pretty good but I’ve only really scratched the surface with it. I only got it as there was a glitch in the system and I paid $30 for it on pre order, otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered.
I tend to prefer Cold War era jets, the mirage f1 is particularly well done, I would highly recommend that one.
Also loving the ka50 too, that thing is awesome.
