That's roughly twice as much though, with no built-in joypad-doohickies so if you're playing controller-based games you've got a bit more to spend and another thing to carry. Plus - though I know it's easy to overstate such things - the additional faff of a PC vs a console.

On the flipside I don't dispute that a grand's worth of laptop will be more powerful, and can do other things.
I suspect a 3060 laptop is going to be able to play games for a lot longer than spending £569 on the 512GB version of the Deck. The screen is tiny and very low resolution (not such an issue due to the size) and I certainly wouldn't want to play something like Call of Duty on it.

I assume you can hook this up to an external monitor but I suspect it just doesn't have the GPU power to run at a higher resolution like this?

Just seems like an expensive five minute wonder to me. I am not sure it is going to be worth ordering one to flip it, I can't see people paying a premium for one when that puts it in the price range of a decent laptop.

I think you're missing the whole point in that it's not a laptop. The concept is just pick up and play - not something that's as straightforward with a laptop where you either need a flat surface for M&K play or a separate controller to juggle.

The form factor is the appeal. With a laptop you need either another mouse and keyboard or a separate controller. A gaming laptop is a compromise from a desktop. There will always be something technically better, you have to weigh up what is important to you. Performance a desktop wins, pickup and play a console, space saving with a laptop, portable a Switch is really the only 'proper' gaming option. This gives you an alternative.

They need them out the door though. Alternatives will be along soon and all those deliveries more than 6 months out are going to have second thoughts.

And the main advantage over the Switch (which I have and like) is the massive games library.

It doesn't look perfect, but it looks pretty darned good for what I'd want.

The Steam games library is quite big...

Doh!

Sorry - I meant the main advantage over the Switch. I'll edit.

And also that it will run Switch games. (unofficially of course)

One of Linus' better videos - he actually investigated a bunch of techie stuff that people were wondering about and seemed genuinely enthusiastic.
Second video (Gamesradar one) - not really as much effort put into it .... laugh

Looks like Valve have done a really good job of making a PC handheld. If this was available right now it would be a must-buy. My pre-order however has an estimated delivery of Q3 2021 (at least a year from now) so we'll see if it's worth getting by then. My guess is that even better silicon could be available or on the horizon by that time so maybe wait for v2.0.

I did love that Linus plugged it into one of those portable USB-C monitors ... would make for a great combo if you were on holiday or business. I wonder if we'll see games using something like FSR to get good 1080p performance out of the deck (render at 720p, scale to 1080p) when hooked up to a larger external monitor. I guess it'll depend on how well it sells - I could see devs actually putting custom Steam Deck modes into games to provide an optimised experience if it would be a selling point for their game.

Looking forward to getting mine, already sorting through all the roms I have on my PC and learning a bit more about the different emulators that are available.

I'm hoping devs will start optimising for the Steam Deck. I've pre-ordered one, I currently own a Switch, PS5 and gaming PC. The switch is by far my favourite, so a portable PC with a massive library of games on day one is something I just couldn't ignore.

A great video by Valve on "How to... But be careful" taking apart the Deck and swapping thumb sticks and the SSD.

https://youtu.be/Dxnr2FAADAs

I'm getting very possibly over excited although mine isnt due until Q2 '22.

Not really a shock but I have just received an email saying that the Deck is delayed by two months and will starting shipping February next year due to complement shortages.

Had the same. To be honest I’m surprised we didn’t get these notifications sooner. Oh well, not the end of the world, but Santa’s gonna have to come up with something else for me for Christmas hehe

Mine was am "after Q2" anyway so looking like an easy choice of Xmas '22 present.

I think the spec is still going to be good enough although the Switch OLED is getting good reviews for its bigger brighter screen.

Do I spend the steam deck £ cache on a VR headset though...

Gives me longer to claw the money together to pay for it, so not too bothered.

Re on line reservations ordering?

Has anyone else had major issues on the valve store trying to reserve a steam deck?

I've been trying for months now and it just keeps failing after the purchase system takes your order details?

I ordered mine back in Sept, and it did error one time but I can't remember what it was I did to fix it (not much use, I know!)

Do you get the email from Steam Support saying that it'll save your cart for 72 hours? Might be worth trying a different credit card or whatever to reserve it against?

Yep I did multiple times!

And sadly that does not work either , tried restoring my failed purchase multiple times, to no avail.

I think I might have got it to work now!

I noticed that I didn’t have a saved credit card on my steam account.

So added one to my account and then used it to top up £10 worth of store credit.

Then the order process seemed to work straight away.

Not sure if that helps me get a device anyway as I know they are massively oversubscribed.

Well one can wait and dream!
