More INT and a staff that scales better with that would both help there. I've just got the Carian Regal Sceptre up to +8 and it's pretty potent, INT is up to around 65 too.

Best bet early on is the Meteorite staff which you can find in Caelid (plenty of guides out there on where to grab it). Also pick up the Rock Sling spell from a building nearby whilst you're there, both combined will do a great job at knocking big amounts of health off bosses. I've only just replaced the staff myself as the regal one I mentioned requires 60 int to use.

I’m kind of at an impasse with this game at the moment. I’m about 25 hours in on a build based on the prisoner but I think I’ve been too general with my levelling as none of my stats are particularly high and I’m struggling with a lot of the enemies in Liurnia and Caelid which is where I feel I should be at level 49.

Not sure whether it would be better to start a new character with a better plan of what I want it to be or stick with this one as I’ve already done the opening part of the game.

First soulsborne I’ve really got into though so I figure there’s still some mechanics I have to figure out.

Do the academy in Liurnia, once that's done you can respec your character.

You have to level depending on your build and how you want to approach combat.

My first play through all my levels went into strength, vigor and endurance as I was using a great sword so sass just charging into fights hence requiring high HP and stamina

I think I am going to have to check the Wiki guide for finding locations. I've got 22 out of 42 listed achievements and I can't seem to find any new places and I've got all the map pieces.

Oh and the Envoy Horns, yes for enemy that don't move (or move slowly) takes too long to fire with quicker ones, or those enemy magic casters who disappear and reappear somewhere else.

Man, although this game really does have a clunky UX (but it is reassuringly familiar to Souls players) I have been blown away by the depth. It has really made Horizon feel tiny in scope by comparison.

Not going to lie though, I really do wish the Souls engine was updated a bit from 2009 or whenever it was made.. trying to do jump puzzles with Torrent is painful when the slightest flick of the analogue stick turns it like 45 degrees. I've fallen off towers more times than I care to count.

I got bored of getting smashed by random mobs while trying to get to Rennala so I started using one of the other characters I'd set up.

I playing as a Wretch from the start, apparently a no no for new players but I've played enough RPGs to understand the basics. Focusing on strength and dex while levelling health, magic and endurance as needed. Using the hookclaws just now which are great fun with the claymore for on my horse or when I need a shield.

Having a much better time tbh, got past Margit within the first hour and a half but I've gone down to weeping peninsula as I can't get past the knight in that dark room at the top of the first part of the castle.

Making enemies explode in gouts of blood with the hookclaws is endlessly entertaining laugh

Just run in grab it and run out that's all I did.

I started as a wretch and honestly I regret it for my first souls game as I had no idea what I should put points into doesn't work like elder scrolls etc imho. I just need to beat this woman so I can redistribute my points

Yeah, I thought about that. That's what I did for the glimstone key on my other character, but I beat this guy last time and my pride won't take leaving him alive (even though I cheesed it with an accidental clipping glitch and magic last time laugh ).

Mage build. SMH. Pansies

;-)

I can't imagine dancing around as far away as possible from a boss whilst trying to zap them with a distance based spell attack. The fear of a boss for me is having to be right in their personal space to attack them.

It's the one aspect of souls games I have never tried out. The only spell I have ever used is the heal spell as it can damage certain types of particularly awkward enemies that I have otherwise never managed to kill.

Each to their own and I'm just poking fun.

Meh, part of what's always put me off getting into Fromsoft games is how gatekeepy the community is. Like there's a right and wrong way to play the game I bought. Next you'll be telling me that summoning is cheating wink

I hope to god you're not riding the horse, or even running. You must walk everywhere.

As a counterpoint I have always struggled to parse (not sure that's the right word) where bosses's limbs are. I watch videos of people fighting bosses up close and it's like a ballet, every move seems to be precise and they never seem to get hit, despite the fact it often looks like the boss's limbs clearly hit the character, etc. I try and get up close and personal and it's like 8/10 of the time I'm getting hit by the attack and when I don't it feels more like fluke with timing than skill.

I wish I had the sight beyond sight to handle an almost pure melee build because some of them look awesome (particularly the Samurai stuff). Until that happens, I'm going to stick with throwing rocks and pebbles ad infinitum.

Anyone else keep completely forgetting that you have a mount you can use in the game? I've caught myself running for some distance before realising.

There is and it is.

The community spirit that you are talking about is to just rip shreds off each other for banter. If you can see it in the right light, it is just to keep us all humble. Now you have tried Elden Ring you are part of the club and if you want you can try the other games too for more of the same with a slightly different flavour.
