I sim raced in a playseat challenge for 4 years, they’re an ace set up and I personally found it very comfortable for long sessions.

Gone down a bit of a rabbit hole of steering wheels and now convincing myself this is the one to get:
https://limeprogaming.com/products/thrustmaster-t-...

Then £150 on the chair and not to mention the £1k for ps5 and VR!

Wish I could convince myself to drop £2k!

I have not looked at those Thurstmasters? But is that much of a step up from Logitech? Which can be had on offer on a regular basis. It’s been a while since I looked but at that money you’re getting very close to the Fanatec stuff which was the next step up

I'm very new to all this but having binged a fair few reviews last night, it seems that Thrustmaster and the Fanatec are about on par - there seems to be some debate about one being belt driven and one direct drive, but the belt driven Thrustmaster is so good you don't really notice it's not direct drive.

But, clearly they are a fair chunk more expensive than the Logitechs and other things around £150 mark.

I'm on two minds, IF and when I can convince myself to shell out on the ps5 and VR, I figure I'm spending a lot anyway, might as well go all the way and get a top end wheel as well. But god knows if I'll ever get to the point where I'm happy to drop £2k on basically playing a racing game.

Its a rabbit hole where £2k will seem a small and distant memory.

In what sense? As in you'll end up spending way more than £2k in the end?

I've not used a belt drive wheel, going directly from gear driven (Logitech G25) to direct drive (Logitech G Pro)

I was always tempted by, but never bought, a Thrustmaster wheel as there were always just too many reliability concerns compared to my trusty old Logitech wheel.

Personally, I'd either go for the cheap option to see if you like it (so a used Logitech wheels works with the PS5, G29 is it?) or if you're going all in regardless, go for a direct drive wheel.

A load cell brake pedal is a 'must' (very nice to have) as well, much nicer to use.

My brother bought his son one of the 'cheap' Logitech wheels at Christmas which we all played a lot - first time I've ever played a game with a wheel, which is why I'm now hooked. That wheel was ok, but as someone who does a fair bit of track day driving, I think I'd definitely feel the benefit of a higher end wheel.
Thanks for the advice on the direct drive, that's probably the wise thing to do if dropping the top end cash.
The reviews I've watched about the Thrustmaster did say the pedals were a bit disappointing, so maybe best to get the wheel on its own and separate pedals - any recommendations?

Maybe another dumb question, but I'm assuming with this VR2 set up, you'd need to buy GT7 on the VR AND on the PS5 if you wanted to play it both in VR but sometimes on a TV as per 'normal'?

Or does one game do both jobs?

No, imagine the VR2 just like another TV, so one copy of the game is all you need.

You can take the headset on and off seamlessly through the game, it's one of the big plus points frankly, it's a far slicker process than PC implementations.

On the PS5, the wheel / pedals must appear as the same unit, so whichever wheelbase you go for, you'll be getting the accompanying pedal set, or it won't work. The pedals have to plug in to the wheel base. This also applies should you want to use a shifter instead of the flappy paddles on the wheel.

This isn't a limitation on the PC, just for reference, you can mix and match whatever you want.

Oh really, so you're stuck with whatever pedals come with the wheel for PS5? Good to know, the review I watched made out that you could swap the pedals, but I guess they must have been using PC then!

You're stuck within the same ecosystem effectively, yeah, so;

Thurstmaster wheel = Thrustmaster pedals
Fanatec wheel = Fanatec pedals

I stuck with Logitech due to the reliability / quality and expectation it'd all "just work". I'm in the frustrating position at the moment that they don't have a decent shifter available (the plastic toy thing they offer really isn't good enough for a £1,000 wheel...) so I'm stuck waiting for them to release something whilst my lovely to use (Thrustmaster....) TH8A gathers dust as I'm only really using GT7 now for the quality of the overall experience.

Cool thanks for the heads up, I'll look at bit more into the Fanatec stuff then as rubbish pedals will really be a disappointment when spending top money.

Yes and no. Many of the manufacturers may have higher spec items that can be added to their wheel later on.

I've got the Thrustmaster T300 RS which was an official Playstation version.

Since getting the PS5 and playing GT7, I've changed the pedals for their higher spec version which uses a load cell on the brake pedal for a much more realistic feel.

I then got carried away and bought the Ferrari F1 wheel as well. So you can swap between different wheels for different uses.

So you can upgrade the pedals as long as they're by the same manufacturer? That would make sense, so I'll have a look around at the pedals on offer too. Not like I'm in a rush sadly, given the ££ we're talking.

Yeah. So I started off with this and used it 'as is' for a long while: https://www.thrustmaster.com/en-gb/products/t300rs...

Then when I got into GT7 after getting a PS5 I upgraded the pedals to these: https://www.thrustmaster.com/en-gb/products/t-lcm-...

And then I went a bit crazy and bought this wheel: https://www.thrustmaster.com/en-gb/products/formul...

Cool, I'm with you, so I could buy wheel on its own and upgrade to those pedals.

With the F1 wheel, as cool as it is, does it actually make much/any different to playing the game vs using the wheel you already had?

It does make a bit of difference, purely due to the extra buttons, and their locations. They just make doing things a bit quicker and more instinctive.

For instance if you look at the photo of the wheel, I've got things set up like:

The big 'N' is look behind. 'Drink' is to scroll through the multi function display.
The two scroll wheels can change Fuel Map and Brake Balance. The bottom left 'Grip' dial changes traction control. So you can adjust those without having to manually scroll to those on the Multi Function Display first.

Obviously if you never really play with any of those settings than it's not really much of a benefit.

For other games like Assetto Corsa Competizione with huge amount of possible controls, then the wheel provides more extra benefit.

Fanantec do a DD Pro bundle for £700, if you can get one, they seam to be able to sell them 10 times over
