Ok... PSP? Check!
1Gb memory stick? Check!
Large DVD collection? Check!
DVD ripping software? Er, nope...

Any recommendations on software? Preferably freeware or not-too-expensive ware and easy to use.

DVX for ripping to avi firstly (Freeware)

Then PSP Video 9 (freeware) to convert the avi to a PSP friendly resolution and frame rate

Thats what i'm using - works well ! Takes time though to rip !

Email me if you get stuck on DVX (if you use it)

Or if you use a Mac...

MacTheRipper to rip the DVD to a file (20 minutes)
ffmpegx to convert the file to PSP format (15 minutes)

Timings based on my dual 2ghz G5 - so mileage timings will vary.

Just a little!

The latter takes about an hour on a 1.5Ghz G4 Powerbook.

Try increasing the gain when ripping. Most programs give you this option, and i think the PSP Video ( software does it automatically to +50%

My PC is a 2.4Ghx P4 with 768mb Ram and 160gb disk and it takes 3 hours roughly from putting a dvd in to getting a psp film.

Kinda frustrating, best way to do it is just kick it off when you are doing something else and come back to it. If you sit and watch the blue bar you will be there all night - lol

I read that you are using DVX and PSP Video 9. Are you also running V2.0 on the PSP? Someone mentioned the problem with the .THM (?) files which seems to be the problem I've been having (and didnt have when running v1.52).

I'm running 1.51. Havent tested my rips yet - need a stick.

the THM files are only thumbnails i think. As long as the names match the file name EXACTLY there shouldnt be an issue !?

ah well, I must just have a glitch as it was working fine before I upgraded. I'm sure there will be a v2.01 soon and perhaps that'll sort it. May also get the latest PSP video 9 and see if that makes a difference...

Yep, its me having that problem, although i never tried the videos on 1.52 although as you say, for some reason the videos simply wont show up on the PSP memory stick movie area without a .THM file. Hopefully the next upgrade will cure the problem!

The file names have to be exactly as you read on the links (M4Vxxxxx.MP4 where xxxxx is any unique number), and it IS case sensitive. They must also be in the correct directory.

As lockstock mentioned, the THM files only give you a thumbnail clip of the movie when browsing for them - if you omit them, you get a grey box when browsing, but they still play.

I'm on v2.0.

What settings in PSPVideo9 are people using to get decent compression and decent quality?

South Park the Movie has compressed to about 380mb which is mint - and the voice sync is perfect, but can I heck as like get The Football Factory to go down enough, or stay in sync

I have a 1gb card but I don't want to take everything up on it... 800mb would be an ideal limit!

Beats me

I have some movies already reduced down for my Pocket PC and when I convert them for the PSP they're coming out almost twice the size! It would be so much easier if the damn thing could play AVIs!

Or Handbrake for a one stop solution.
