Thanks everyone.
I think I've ruled out the Series X as I don't "need" it and it's a fair investment which I wouldn't be able to get the best out of.
So it's down to the Series S v One X.
I have found a pristine One X 2nd hand with a bunch of games (some of which I would trade) for £150. Gives me buffer to get an extra controller and Forza...
But also seen a Series S with FC24 already installed and a headset for £160. And the Seagate SSD add on is £100 in Black Friday. So combined still £100 cheaper than a new Series X, with a game the boys definitely want, which again pays for extra controller and Forza.
I don't need a Blu-ray player as keeping the PS3...so now I'm tempted by the S!
Edited to add just noticed you can't transfer digital games on the S...
There are numerous articles and YouTube videos comparing the merits of best of last gen Xbox one X Vs the cheaper of the current gen Xbox series s. If you have a look they go through it all and end up usually recommending the newer gen Xbox series s. I watched a few before I bought my second hand Xbox one X but I was happy for our uses it was correct. It's also a mint, boxed limited edition gears of war 5 model so I felt it may hold its value. Cheers I think I've ruled out the Series X as I don't "need" it and it's a fair investment which I wouldn't be able to get the best out of.

So I bought a Series X .
Completely frivolous but hey you only live once and I secured a 2nd hand model with 10 months warranty and two controllers for £320 which feels like a good deal.
Consoles are sold as a loss leader and so you are getting a more powerful machine than the retail price point.Completely frivolous but hey you only live once and I secured a 2nd hand model with 10 months warranty and two controllers for £320 which feels like a good deal.
With the Xbox Series X you are getting the maximum something for nothing benefit.
Bit off topic but best thing to happen in my Mrs house is dump the game consoles for a PC, you can play loads of games via epic games / steam etc, and the kids can do homework etc, and you can check ya e-mails.
Yes ypu can still use a game controller we have an xbox one plugged into it.
I play PUBG now and again when it's free !

There are numerous posts with incorrect naming conventions above that make the advice confusing. Hopefully this will help. Open for edits/changes.
"Xbox One" generation also called "Xbone"Last gen, equivalent of PS4:
Xbox one (launch model)
Xbox one X (more powerful GPU designed for 4k gaming and to compete with PS4 PRO)
Xbox one S (an update to the Xbox one model that can display 4k and can display HDR but doesn't have the gfx punch and power of the Xbox one X model)
"Xbox Series" generation, current gen equivalent in age to the PS5:
Xbox Series S (stripped down version designed for digital downloads and 1080p gaming).
Xbox Series X (full pack Ps5 competitor, 4k quality gfx and frame rates etc, best available to this day)
There are people suggesting Xbox one X is getting their vote when they really mean the latest generation Xbox series X.
I think Microsoft really have made a mess of it."Xbox One" generation also called "Xbone"Last gen, equivalent of PS4:

Not only is the series S quite an under performer for current gen, the naming model is confusing for anyone that isn't a gamer (I.e quite alot of parents that are doing the buying).
Playstation on the other hand. Old one is 4, new one is 5 with the option of disc or not but same performance. So simple.

I try to imagine a collection of very sucessful clever people in microsoft coming up with these names for their new gaming consoles. How come there wasn't just one person with basic common sense in the room, probably paid 10% of the average earnings of the top folk that just called BS on it all.

Exactly this. With the Xbox Series X you are getting the maximum something for nothing benefit.
I used to be a PC Gamer only and then tried a console I bought for my step-kids and quickly realised that hooked up to a great TV, there wasn’t really much in it between PC and console for a lot less cost! Consoles punch way above their price point vs PC’s.
Today I have a PS5 and XBox X hooked up to a Sony XR65A95L TV and it is great.

PC is my preferred platform, but you need to spend a lot to get something better than a £350 Series X. A PC at twice or even triple that price will be a heap of junk.Yes ypu can still use a game controller we have an xbox one plugged into it.

Add onto that the issues with stability, the general 'fiddle factor' that PCs have with updating drivers, adjusting the settings of games to run best on your rig and the fact that most people would rather sit in front of their TV than sit at a desk to game and I think for the casual audience, consoles make much more sense. You just download the game, it works without issues and no tweaking.
PC gaming is great, but it's hardly as accessible as console gaming. Casual gamers need as few barriers as possible to get in their way.
I'm pleased the OP is sorted, I was going to start a very similar thread but it probably makes more sense to post here;
We have a HD TV and an Xbox One X. The kids like to play Minecraft and I play APEX or Fortnite
If we upgrade to an Xbox series S or X, would we notice an improvement in gameplay on our existing TV? Would we get smoother game play or better graphics for example?

Get a subscription to game pass. Even one month (eBay for £6.50) will give you an insight into what is available.
Forza 8 and Horizon 5 are both available for free play.
Perfect thanks!Forza 8 and Horizon 5 are both available for free play.
forza 8 really is the best in the series for physics and playability with a pad, but needs more updates to the non-online modes, its very limited and quick to complete if online isn't your thing [it isn't mine].

This may not apply to the games that you play but when I upgraded from the Xbox One X to a Xbox Series X the game loads and the delays between chapters were lightning fast and it saved much frustration. We have a HD TV and an Xbox One X. The kids like to play Minecraft and I play APEX or Fortnite

speed of loading. The rest would be less obvious as you don't yet have a 4k tv. We have a HD TV and an Xbox One X. The kids like to play Minecraft and I play APEX or Fortnite

It wouldn't be a value for money upgrade but of course you would see some step up and you would be playing on the current generation. I really like my xbox one x and when using it on my HD tv downstairs, don't really compare it to my PS5 and 4k tv upstairs.

How did the Series X go down on Christmas day, OP?
Thanks for asking .As I opened it we have some great video footage of my son's running circles round the lounge yelling "XBOX, XBOX, XBOX!"
I am loving it - my BIL is a pilot so we spent a lot of Christmas day trying to land at St Bart's on MS Flight Sim. And as much as the new Series X exclusives look great, I have spent most of the time so far enjoying flying down a mountain on SSX.
Great fun and Ultimate Gamepass is very good.
I’picked a series X up today for £409 and a £50 gift card from Argos.
First impressions are that it’s brilliant. I stupidly bought a PS4 instead of an Xbox One in the last gen of consoles after being an Xbox gamer since the original came out. I never gelled with the PS4.
I’ve just signed up to Gamepass and have been playing NHL ‘94 as I haven’t played it since the mid 90’s and the gameplay is still superb!! Currently waiting for Forza Motorsport to download.
