Not sure what you're planning on doing on the 7th-11th of April, but you won't be playing GTA:IV. wink

Having a look around the GTA forums and just found what seems to be the first decent details of what we can expect from the online mode.

If true the highlights for me are, race mode, free roam, and so glad this will be in, cops and robbers.

I dunno about anyone else, but I am holding back my excitement in case I am disappointed. I'll explain:

I loved Vice City. After playing it for a few minutes you were completely immersed in mid-eighties Miami. The buildings, the car, the music, and of course the cut-scenes and the missions. It just 'felt' brilliant. It was only because I got stuck at one point 3/4 of the way through my excitement waned.

San Andreas was great. The missions were good, and more varied and of course the map was HUGE. To get from one side to the other you *needed* one of those planes... The problem for me was the 'atmosphere'. I never really got into the Compton/Grove thing. I didn't like the music, and although the separate parts of the map had their own distinctive style, I never felt as 'immersed' in the 'culture' of the thing. Kind of like watching a cheapy made for TV sci-fi flick compared to something like Blade Runner.

Now, the reason I am not *too* excited, is that if the trend continues then the atmosphere will be less. From what I can see the 'New York' type atmosphere would even be less distinctive than the 'Miami Vice' and 'LA' atmospheres of the previous two. From what I have read also, fixed wing aircraft have gone, as well as the 'empty space' type areas. For me, this was a realistic feature of the 'countryside' settings of San Andreas.

So, I wait and see and hope that I am pleasantly surprised!

Its going to suck if planes have gone. I always used to love stealing the big 747 and going flying then jumping out and waiting ages to get to earth again.

Suppose there is always the choice of getting the xbox pack with san andreas in it.

The planes definitely have gone, for a couple of reasons, one of which being that they don't want loads of 9/11 style homages up on youtube and the other being that they simply don't fit with the built up city where it's based, there are a few helicopters in it though.

I didnt think of the 9/11 thing.

The thing I don't get though is at the moment there are conflicting reports about the map.

On the one hand, we are told it is bigger than SA - I think one quote which may have been an early one saying it would take an hour to get across. Yet, it is more compact and more detailed, so planes aren't needed.

I liked the fact that SA had three distinct areas with some realistic space between them. After playing for a while on the same streets you even got to learn the layout.

At the moment I just can't get as excited about a large homogenous area of blocks and cross-streets. Unless there are some tricks up their sleeve.

Oh ye of little faith. The map is definitely smaller than San Andreas, but it is packed with much more detail this time around, it's still a large area and will take you some time to work out where you are on the map until everything is familiar.

San Andreas was great as there was so much space, but most of it was empty and devoid of anything to do, Liberty City is packed with rich detail and there won't be any wasted space there.

I wont miss the empty spaces, and the lack of fixed wing craft probably isnt a terrible loss either.

Im also just waiting to see. Until last week Id done no reading on the game, it really does look set to be better than the predecessors from what I can gather biggrin Its quite possible that the cops and crooks and other mini games might offer hundred of hours of play alone. Pre-ordered today for instore pickup!

I just had a quick blast on SanAn. First time in years.

I forgot how much dead space there was even in supposedly built up areas. Took ages to get even a short distance. I shall wait and see if IV 'just works'!
