Grr. I started digging a small 2x2 vertical mine shaft alongside my long staircase, and managed to fall down it when it was only 10 or so blocks high, taking my diamond pick and loads of other stuff with it. I thought it would be like a monster kill and my gear would be left behind, but it seems to have despawned. D'oh.

Can you not set re-spawn points in the game?

What you can do is make a massive tower on you house, as high as you can. Then when you respawn you'll be able to see it.

No, you can't set re-spawn points in the Alpha unfortunately.

I kept getting lost too, so I built a 1-block-wide pole on top of the highest hill next to my den. Even that isn't visible from the spawn point, so when I found my flagpole after respawning, I went back to the spawn point and dug a big arrow out of the ground and left a trail of sand blocks now and then.

I have a theory about deep-down stuff. Lava appears to spawn about 4 or 5 blocks above the unbreakable rock base. I have excavated an area approx 15x20 down at the 'floor' and only got occasional red stone. No iron at all. So I started to excavate the roof upwards, only to be met with a lava breakthrough (waah!). So I tried a different place. More lava. So I decided to go above it and dig down to explose the lava field. I found more red stone and occasional iron clusters. I am hoping this is where diamond forms too, as it was around this level that I found mine, and I think it was around here that you got yours Jake (next to the lava).

I don’t have alpha yet, but I'm enjoying Classic. I have recreated my own house and garden. It took me ages, and when I finished I wished the mine craft version was my own house

Played a few multiplayer games of it, hard finding a server not full of griefers. Came across a huge blob thing in one of my single player mines as well next to a vein of about 7 diamonds!.

Spent an hour at dinner just digging a 2X2 mineshaft down to the centre of the earth. Built a new glass roof for my house too..

Any recommendations on what to do once at the unbreakable rock?

One thing I noticed in that video was his hydroponics. When I harvest my crops, I get stuff that falls into the water so I have to jump in and swim up and down to collect it. He just has flowing water and an open end, so the water flow moves all the drops to the end where he can pick them up. Genius! I have tried to work out what the best growing conditions are, 1 row of torches, 2 rows, blocks of seeds, 2 rows of water... There seems to be no logic to it. Putting torches near outdoor/greenhouse crops helps though.

I think I would start my mine from the end of the ramp you built that currently ends at the top of the mineshaft. Just keep digging 2 across / 1 down. Oh and put half block steps in so you don't need to jump up the steps smile

Started a new game on my desktop PC and managed to find an island floating in the sky not too far from my respawn point. Built a Japanese style house on top and a single 3 wide staircase leading down to the bottom, with high side walls and a door at the bottom. Found some diamond, gold and redstone on a recent dig, forgot to bring a metal pick... d'oh! Returned and managed to get plenty of materials biggrin

Made a bow and arrow too, unfortunately, a large group of creepers like to dwell by the bottom of my staircase and they've already blown a hole in the side once. Reheated stone is quite explosion proof though, resulting in minor damage.

Also, don't start a fire in a wooden house with the steel and flint, I had to rebuild my house in stone (on my laptop game) because I'm a tool.

EDIT: Now have a lava moat protecting my floating island thumbup

Dammit, I've lost my mine. Went for a wander to try and find more coal and completely lost track of where I was.

How big is the world?

Apparently 4 times larger than the real earth IIRC. It just keeps randomly generating new parts until it reaches its limit.

I always leave big towers of dirt/rock to point me in the right direction, see one of those and the VandelayVolcano won't be too far hehe

And stick a couple of torches on top too, so its easily visible at night...

As it happens I found a nice big seam of coal, so I started a new dig there anyway biggrin I did have a big pillar on the hill where my first place was, but I went so far it wasn't visible.

Doh.
